Mexican Drug Cartel Allegedly Puts a Price on Arizona Sheriff's Head

PHOENIX - He's been at the center of the discussions and controversies surrounding illegal immigration enforcement in Arizona for quite a while.

On the day parts of Arizona's immigration law, SB 1070, went into effect, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is in the news for another reason: there's a price on his head - allegedly offered by a Mexican drug cartel.

The audio message in Spanish is a bit garbled, but the text is clear.

"It's offering a million dollars for Sheriff Joe Arpaio's head and offering a thousand dollars for anyone who wants to join the Mexican cartel."

A man who wants to remain anonymous says his wife received the text message Tuesday evening. It also included an international phone number and instructions to pass the message along.

"She showed it to me..I was kind of disgusted..I reported it to the Sheriff's department yesterday..they said they were going to direct the threat squad on it."

Lisa Allen of the Sheriff's office says they believe the message originated in Mexico.

Although the Sheriff has received numerous death threats in the past, they believe this threat is credible because of its timing.

"Arpaio gets threats pretty routinely, but obviously with this heightened awareness of his role in the immigration issue we've got to take this one a little bit more seriously with a million dollar contract out on him," said Allen.

But she says what really concerns investigators is how quickly the message may have been spread. "It's going so many different places that our folks are looking at it and thinking well at any given point in time it could land in front of some crazy person who thinks I can do that."

As for Arpaio's reaction to the threat, "It's a little bit like water off a duck's back for him, but you never know if it's that sense of false bravado with him..you just can't read it, I'm sure he's concerned, I'm sure he's concerned for his family more than anything else," said Allen.

The Sheriff's office says investigators are trying to trace exactly where the text message came from, but because it did originate from an international number, that will be difficult too.

Man I don't know what to say.. As bad as it is to wish death upon another man I'm sure not going to say it's wrong what they are trying to get accomplished here.

The cartel has given Sheriff Arpaio more credibility than he could have hoped for. IF there really is a bounty on his head, they've effectively validated him as an effective agent against in the "drug war".

I don't know that the politics of this whole thing matter at all. Some may think that Sheriff Arpaio is wrong in his methods, some may think he is right. However, what's being tested here is the ability of an outside, foreign agent, having the ability to issue death warrants for anybody in this country. It's Sheriff Arpaio now but, what if the circumstances were different?

What if, for example (and this is just as an example people, don't come unglued on me), it were a foreign country extremist group who put a contract out on President Obama for his stance on some foreign policy issue?

I don't think this should be about who the contract is on. I think it should be about what being able to do this represents for all Americans. That, at least to me, is troubling.

I see where your trying to go on this. But Joe is just a thug. He has no belief on human rights.

Joe is a thug. But this is not about him, its about a crime syndicate issuing threats against American authorities. Can't have that, even for a bag a garbage like Sheriff Joe.

And what if some of us think he's a criminal with blood on his hands? I frankly couldn't care less about his politics.

Having said that obviously any violence coming from drug cartels isn't something I'm going to support. I don't care if they want to kill a man on death row... they should still be stopped, arrested, and jailed. They are after all members of a drug cartel and we all have an interest in their being shut down.

I do however question the sincerity of this. Sheriff Joe is known for pulling some serious bull**** when it helps him politically. I've also never heard of prices on people's heads being seemingly sent via text message to random phone numbers. Why was this woman's number on a list a drug cartel felt it should be sending people it wants targeted for killing? Drug cartels aren't known for the wide open communication styles, they tend to keep things close the vest and protect that secrecy with violent over reactions... suddenly they are putting a price on a mans head via a CHAIN LETTER text message? Do people get 7 years of bad luck if they don't forward it to 10 friends?

If I were a betting man I'd say this is a joke, a prank, or a political stunt. If it's real I hope the catch the idiots behind it and lock them up. I certainly wouldn't support anyone killing the Sheriff.

So you're a deather..you don't believe the bounty actually exists?..:)

Count me in as a deather, knowing Arpaio's history I would not be least bit surprised if this is another one of his bull**** stunts that he does from time to time to try and intimidate his critics or gain legitimacy. I am going to need a whole lot more than a random text message because right now the method doesn't really make any sense at all other then it being a bull**** stunt.

Great detective work.

:ols: :ols:

A part of me hopes the mexican drug cartels really are this stupid. They would have a contingent of special forces and A130 gunships up their ass in less then 24 hours.

They would simply be rolled into the war on terror and wish they were never born.

This would make a great flick well worth the price of admission.

Or rolled into the war on drugs... because that has worked so well, also. I like calling things 'the war on...' It warms the ****els of my American heart. :)
