WP: Albert Haynesworth fails to complete second part of conditioning test

I think this is a case of the coach cutting the player down a couple notches - and deservedly so. And its not even really about conditioning. Its about humbling the guy a bit, so the specifics of how far or how fast don't really matter much to me. Coach did what he needed to do, Bert will "pass" the next go-around, no matter how its structured, and that should be it.

Just win baby.

Lmao, not many cross country athletes are 330, and I would venture that several redskins wouldnt pass the third race.

Shannahan is being an idiot trying to lodr it over AH, the truth is that we need him as much as he needs us and if Shannahan sabotages his return then the failures associated with that fall directly on him.

The weight issue is accounted for in the expected time.

Should Shanny have let him cheat the clock?

This is what JLC wrote on NFL.com

Haynesworth originally was told that he would have to do two sets of shuttle runs in the allotted time to be cleared for practice. However, that was not how it went down.

Haynesworth completed the first set in plenty of time, and then, as has been the case with the way the team has conducted the test, he was then given a several-minute break. Haynesworth went inside to use the bathroom, according to the source, and when he returned to the field he was told he took too long and therefore had to start over.

Haynesworth again finished the next set of shuttles (his second) in ample time, but he was not able to complete the third and final set, and thus was told he failed and could not practice.

Haynesworth has told teammates that even during his All-Pro season he could never have completed three shuttles in that time frame, and several team sources have pointed out the irony that the defensive tackle is in markedly better shape than he was this time last year.

Its quite simple why Coach made him do this... to set a precedent. You don't want to be with the team while they do their thing? Cool. No harm done. But you're going to have to pass a ridiculously hard conditioning test.

Odd how Al had to go to the bathroom in the middle of conditioning. Sounds like he was looking for a break. Good on Coach for calling him on his bull****.

Yeah this sounds more like a case of Haynesworth making a bad decision to go and waste too much time on his break.

Sounds like if he didn't take the break and just did the two sets, he would have passed.

This sounds more like the Coaching staff establishing themselves and showing that everyone is going to be treated the same.

Haynesworth will be practicing with the team soon. No worries.

nice assumption

it's not like he had all day to do them, since we are making assumptions since we don't know what the required time was, wouldn't you say it is safe to assume he had to do them in a fairly quick amount of time, given it's a conditioning test, and that kids 1/3rd of his size who run all the time being able to do 3 sets is not the same as him having to do 3 at a quick pace when he isn;t at a speed position.

Shanny intentionally did this to send a message, he added the 3rd knowing Al wouldn't be able to pass it. Al still passed the first 2, everyone is saying he looks slimmer, he's in shape for his position it seems. I mean, can you even think of a DL his size that could do 3 of those sets?

I'm glad Shanny sent the message though, especially after Al's stunt of asking for a trade only after he had collected $21 mill. essentially upfront.

it also makes perfect sense, to me, that Shanny would do this because I imagine he was looking for a way to not have Al particpate the first day. The attitude of "you didn't want to be here with everyone else, you didn't put in the work with them when we are trying to establish something new, so you don't get to particpate the first day."

I'm hoping Al particpates tomorrow, but part of me is thinking maybe Shanny pulls this for a couple days to make Big Al "earn it."

This isn't a speed test. DL times are more lenient than all others besides OL times. This is a fact and not an assumption. The required time varies by coaching staff. This test is a very, very common test for conditioning. Al forced the issue by not meeting the break time requirement. Shanny did as he should have.

Al needs to show that he is in good enough shape to STILL be explosive and create havoc in the last 5 minutes of a game, not just the first 5 minutes before he comes up with his fake injury for the game.

That means that you have to push that second drill just as hard as the first.

I'm glad Shanahan is demanding that players be in shape. I'm also glad (for Trent Williams' sake) that he doesn't allow "star players" to be exempt. It's that kind of thinking that led to BMW eating his way out of the starting tackle spot in Buffalo.
