Draft idea

Here's a draft idea to kick around. The best athelete available in the draft may be available in the 3rd or 4th round. Antawan Randel El, QB/WR/RB/Slash of Indiana. His main problem is the "classic QB size" thing. He's only 5'10", but he has a rocket arm, great smarts, willing to do "whatever it takes".

B Mitch had some of the same qualities...and often was the third QB on the roster. What to you guys think? Could S.S. mold him into the Wuerfel of the NFL? A Wuerfel with legs and arm...hummmmm.

I don't know where you guys find the time to check out all these potential latter round prospects. Frankly, I find it a chore just keeping up with all the top round picks

The only draftnik thing just isn't up my alley.

Randle El might be in a whole different category. Yeah, his height's against him, but he's got potential as a Brian Mitchell-sort of players. He can sub as WR, QB, and probably give you some 3rd down RB capability. It's hard to ignore the guy's statistical achievements at Indiana.

I'll take him in the 5th round over Nate Stimson any day.

I wish him the best, but college is usually the last hurrah for some guys who are likely not gonna make it at the pro level because they are too something - usually too small, even though otherwise they are tearing it up at this level.

It's the same with Dwight Freeney. He's likely the best pass rusher in college, but at 6-1, 250 he's too small to be a DE in the pros and is unlikely to play linebacker.

I have watched this guy on occassion and I can tell you that only Michael Vick has better moves running from the QB position, if that.

Randle-El is a burner as a WR too. I would definitely draft him as a WR, but put him on my depth chart as a backup in emergency situations at QB. Brian Mitchell had that dubious distinction, but I can tell you, Ranle-El would fair better in that role.

As a starter or even as a #2 or #3, he won't get drafted as a QB, but instead may be taken as a WR. As a RB, he is more of a slot receiver, gadget play technician or 3rd down pass play receiver.

As a starting or #2 QB, he'd be a liability, not just because of his height, but on controlled routes and using some other mechanics in tight ballgames I didn't see enough that he can get it done. As a QB, I watched him lose some pretty important ballgames, but in the other capacities he did real well.

That sounds good INDY.

I like the 3rd QB thing...you could use that slot for another position for depth...

I always liked Qb being your punter ala(Danny White ) to free up roster space.

Only problem if there a injury now your out two positions....

Woody Danzler(Clemson) is going to fall under that category as well...

[ January 20, 2002: Message edited by: Hangman55 ]
