McD5
Unbelievable video on local tv. I have no idea why they are showing such graphic things these days. And I thought the luge video was bad. Link below does not show the video. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100224/ap_on_re_us/us_seaworld_death ORLANDO, Fla. – A trainer at SeaWorld Orlando died Wednesday after a killer whale attacked her in front of a horrified audience. Orange County Fire Rescue spokesman John Mulhall said paramedics were called to the Shamu Stadium at the theme park resort where they found a worker who could not be revived. Park guest Victoria Biniak told WKMG-TV that the trainer had just finished explaining to the audience the show they were about to see. "He was thrashing her around pretty good," Biniak said. "It was violent." The guests were asked to leave and the park was closed.
Forehead
Man, I was just there last summer, saw that show while I was at Sea World. Now granted, I hated the show, but the trainers seemed nice enough. Real shame, I wonder if they're going to put the whale down?

McD5
Where's the video? You don't want to see the video they just showed on local Orlando news. Totally uncalled for. They just showed the trainer's body, or what was left of it, laying on a mat next to the pool from a helictoper. It looked like a movie prop from Jaws. steveo21
Not the first time this KW has done this. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/nationa...B2vS6GxUAntGFO Quote: ORLANDO, Fla. — A female trainer was killed by a killer whale at SeaWorld’s Shamu stadium in Orlando, Florida on Wednesday, according to local reports. Witness Victoria Biniak described the attack to local station WKMG, saying that the veteran trainer had just finished telling the audience about the show they were about to witness when the whale struck. "The trainer was explaining different things about the whale..and then the trainer that was down there walked away from the window..and then Telly (the whale) took off really fast in the tank and he came back, shot up in the air, grabbed the trainer by the waist and started thrashing (her) around," Biniak told the station. Biniak added that the attack was violent enough for the trainer’s shoe to fly off. The Orlando Sentinel reported that Orange County Fire & Rescue responded at 2 p.m. local time to a report of a person who was not breathing. Biniak told the station that the whale, named Tilikum, or Telly for short, does not typically have a trainer in its tank because it is too large. WKMG reported that Tilikum is a nearly 30-year-old, 12,300-pound bull Orca. Tilikum was previously involved in two fatal incidents. On February 21, 1991, the whale, then living at a location in British Columbia, Canada was involved in an incident that resulted in the death of 20-year-old female trainer Keltie Byrene. Tilikum was moved to Orlando in 1992. In 1999, a man who snuck into the park after closing time was found dead inside the whale’s tank.
Destino
well they aren't called cuddly whales... Certainly wouldn't say the trainer deserved anything like this but I think there is a certain amount of risk involved when you deal with these types of animals. The Croc Hunter was killed by a creature many would consider significantly less dangerous.

Spartacus87
Killer Whales are serious business. They're apex predators who don't mess around when they're hunting in the wild. They can "trained" for shows and all that, but at the end of the day, they still have those predatory instincts. It's certainly a tragic story for the trainer though. Predicto
This things are too big and too smart to be kept confined the way they are. No wonder they go nuts. It's bad enough with porpoises, but given the size of Orcas, it's madness. It would be like you or me living all of our lives in a single bedroom with a low ceiling. Maybe if you had a tank the size of the Tidal Basin it might work out, but no animal park has that.
hokie4redskins
I met a sweet girl at a bar in NYC late last year. Chatted a bit and she told me she's a trainer at SeaWorld. Can't remember her name of course, but I'd recognize her. Hope it wasn't her.
boobiemiles
people need to respect nature. Just because you can ride on the nose of a whale doesn't mean it won't rip you apart. Like the people that have chimps as pets, or the guy that was killed by the sting ray, you have to respect nature.

ljs
CNN just showed a news conference where "officials" are now saying the trainer fell into the water and drowned. The whale still may have played a part in her death, but they are saying the whale did not randomly attack her.

It's my understanding that their are two types of killer whales. One type which eats fish primarily and another which eats seals, penguins etc. They are two entirely different social groups. Whale shows are exclusively populated by the fish eating whales, not the mamal / bird eating whales.
PCS
http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/02/24/killer.whale.trainer.death/index.html?hpt=T1 (CNN) -- A killer whale killed a trainer Wednesday afternoon at SeaWorld's Shamu Stadium in Orlando, Florida, a public information officer for the Orange County Sheriff's Office said. The woman, 40, was in the whale holding area about 2 p.m. when "she apparently slipped or fell into the tank and was fatally injured by one of the whales," Jim Solomons said. "There's no sense of foul play; right now, this appears to be an accident." "One of our most experienced animal trainers drowned" in the accident, said Dan Brown, vice president and general manager of SeaWorld Orlando. He said an investigation will be carried out. "We'll make our findings known in due course," he said. "We've never in the history of our parks experienced an incident like this. All standard operating procedures will be reviewed." He would not elaborate. "Please bear with us; we've just lost a member of our family," he said. *click link for more*

Last time I was at sea world they selected a kid from the audience and the whale jumped out of the water and kissed her..... How many sea worlds are there like 8? five showes a day for a decade and we have one death? That doesn't seem like an unreasonable risk... I think golden retrievers have killed more folks in the US over that time period.

Ghost of
That's one big impressive fish. Uhhhh. Orcas are actually a species of dolphin and, as such, are mammals. But I think you know that, your post maybe was in jest. And a comment directed at people who talk of "can't tame wild animals." Well, certainly. But remember that human beings are allegedly creatures you can trust to "act" predictably and how many mass shootings, impulsive stabbings, beatings do you see---to say nothing of the mentally unstable types? This particular whale seems unstable compared to the others. It's not that I'm saying there is a perfect situation with certain animals and training and that there are no risks, only that sometimes we kind of dismiss fairly intelligent creatures as being "wild" and unpredictable when we're actually no more predictable than they are. It's just that we recognize signs (or so we think) when someone turns angry, violent, etc and think we can at least react.
