No More Alcohol? WTF!!!

I just found out that the I will not be allowed to drink alcohol for at least the next four months. My medical condition, sarcoidosis, has not gone away, and now they are going to put me on methotrexate which states to "not to consume ANY alcohol". I can't even have a social beer. This ****ing SUCKS.

I know I can go without alcohol for weeks at a time, but I like to have the occasional beer every now and then. I'm just extremely bummed right now that I won't be able to have ONE drink.

I know it sounds wrong of me to be ranting about this when I know the reason behind me not being able to drink is due to the medicine that will hopefully cure me of this crap.

I just hope these new meds they put me on will knock this **** out for good so I can go on with my life. I've been held hostage to prednisone for the past year and a half and now I have to deal with this ****

Sorry, but I had to vent.

Talk to the Doctor.

Maybe he will allow one beer a week. Literally one.

From what I read they say no alcohol period due to the risk of liver damage that already exists from just taking methotrexate by itself.

I will ask my doc though to see what he recommends, but I still might play it safe and abstain from alcohol altogether.

Yes, ask.

You aren't supposed to drink anything while on antibiotics either, but I have never experienced, nor heard anyone have a problem doing so.

You know what to do. If when you ask the Doctor, he gets this crazy look in his eye--then obviously don't drink.

If he says one a week might be okay, then problem solved.

Or go without drinking.

I can go months without a single drink. And really I could go years if I wanted.

If people don't understand, they suck not you.

It's not the people I worry about, because everyone I hang out with will understand and support me 100%. It's the fact that I like to have a beer occasionally after work to relax and watch tv/sports. I guess it's good that this didn't happen during football season.

Repalce with a glass bottle Coke.

Water in a beer bottle works wonders!

How about NA Beer, I know it sounds blah but after the first few they arent bad. When we were in Iraq, we had NA, me and another Sgt, would get off patrols and grab a six pack each and sit on our 'front porch' and act tlike we were back home. Of course, no buzz or anything, but just the taste of beer and sittng around bs'ing helped.

Best of luck fighting your illness.

Might be the best thing that ever happened to you(depends on how you deal with it). Read, exercise, take up new hobbies, do the things you always wanted to do. Alcohol is just an escape from eveyday life, for which there is only one escape, death. And you don't want that do you?

Methotrexate is not like an antibiotic. It seriously modifies your immune system. You can't drink and you don't want t **** around with it. You can smoke however!

I've pretty much stopped since the MS dx and find I miss it less and less. I do like my Med MJ though. Much more relaxing and I don't feel it the next day. You'll do all right, just one more of life's little adjustments.

Your apprehension of not being able to drink is completely understandable. I was an everyday pot smoker for like 4 years, and circumstances in my life caused me to go from smoking pretty much constantly every day to not smoking at all for the past two and a half years. It's rough having that blowoff valve taken away from you, but you learn to live with it.

Maybe you should try switching to green. It's harmless and chills you out every bit as much as a beer.

Sorry, but I had to vent.

I had to go without any alcohol for about 6 months once for a medication course and honestly it was not anywhere as bad as I thought it was going to be.

People were all really cool when I turned down various offers and after about two weeks I really did not think about it at all except with certain foods. I think what makes (made) it easy was the thought that it was not as if I would never have a beer or glass of wine again, but just for the short term, and I was pretty sure they would keep making it.:silly:

Good luck with your treatment and keep the goal in sight. I hope you find it as easy as I did, and you condition goes away for good.

How does the medical MJ program in NM work? Are you ever worried about federal interference, or actually, now that Obama is in office, I guess a better question is WERE you worried about federal interference during the Bush years?

One beer doesn't have enough alcohol in it to really relax you anyway (unless you are drinking the really good stuff). It is the routine that soothes you. Try to find something else to replace it. Yerba Mate if you can find it and do it right is great. Fancy soda might work too. I love a good Soiux City Sasparilla. Or just do as KAO says and smoke 'em if you got 'em.

That sucks mia. My doc, just put me on prednisone this past friday. Turns out i've got bells palsy. Not sure how I got it, could be from cold/sinus infection/etc... but could also be from lymes disease, which i've gotta get tested for asap as soon as I can get my insurance worked out.

I too enjoy a beer or 12 every now and then, or daily :ols: Going 4 months would definately suck without being able to enjoy a nice cold one, but I guess in the grand scheme of things, its better to have your health. It's definately better than the alternative.

EDIT: didn't realize you said 4 months, thought you said a year and a half, oops.

Try some O'Doul's or St. Pauli Girl Non-Alcoholic Beer. There's usually a Non-Alcoholic section in most beer stores. Stay clear of Old Milwuakee's, it is absolutely horrible. It's dirt cheap but I'd rather not even have it. Go with O'Doul's or St. Pauli...or Clausthaler if it's there.

Remember that Non-Alcoholic Beer still has a tiny bit of alcohol in it. .2-.7%. But that's the same as mistakenly having some Listerine drip down your throat. Still, if it's ABSOLUTELY NO ALCOHOL WHAT SO EVER, then you still have to avoid N/A beer.

I appreciate all the well wishes and the alternatives. The one I definitely can not do is the MJ, due to my job and clearance. What also sucks is I bought a kegerator about two months ago and I just put a fresh keg of dos equis amber in it

Again, like KAOskins stated, Methotrexate is different from the "other" meds that say you shouldn't take alcohol with them. Methotrexate doesn't need any help to cause cerosis or other permanent liver damage. It is fully capable of doing that by itself. The additional strain on your liver by adding alcohol to that mixture is a sure thing for permanent liver damage. I think I will skip out on that.
