The Patriots said Monday that they made the move to continue negotiating a long-term agreement with the six-year veteran. They said that agreement has been their top contractual priority and Wilfork remains a significant part of their plans. Wilfork has said he wouldn't be happy if the team put the franchise tag on him. Instead, he's scheduled to make $7.003 million next season because of the tag. The Patriots didn't say if they used the exclusive tag, which would prevent another team from signing Wilfork this year, or a non-exclusive tag, which would give New England the right to match any offer for him or receive two first-round draft picks if it doesn't. Wilfork made his second Pro Bowl this past season and has 303 tackles and 7.5 sacks in his career.

Big Blue Joe
That sucks for Wilfork. In this year's free agency market, he almost certainly would have made more than that.
Warhead36
The Pats should just resign him. He's still only 28 years old and in the prime of his career and he's a great player. A top notch 3-4 NT is crucial and he fills that void. No way the Pats let him go...
wysknz1
That sucks for Wilfork. In this year's free agency market, he almost certainly would have made more than that. I wish I was unlucky enough to make that for a year... that said, I agree
HeHateMe
Skins really would sign him? How much money can a team invest in the interior defensive line?
redskins55
Wilfork is pissed right now without a doubt! He openly said he did not want New England to place the franchise tag on him.
Hiro
Skins really would sign him? How much money can a team invest in the interior defensive line? I doubt it. It's just kinda wishful thinking on some fans' parts.

bushwack
I'd be shocked if Wilfork and the Pats don't reach a long term deal. Wilfork is their best and most important defensive player, and seeing as he is coming into his prime, the Pats should wrap him up for several years to come. HeHateMe
I doubt it. It's just kinda wishful thinking on some fans' parts. I'm not saying it would not be awesome to have AH and VW side-by-side, but the defensive line was markedly improved this season and the money should be invested in the offensive line, if possible. dallasfan
Maybe Casey Hampton...I guess. For sure. NFL network is reporting the Steelers will put the non exclusive franchise tage on NT Casey Hampton and the transition tag on kicker Jeff Reed
