Nutrition/Diet Thread

We have a workout thread going on, and I feel this would be a pretty good compliment to it, discussing nutrition.

As most people who workout regularly know, what you eat, what supplements you take, what fruits you have etc are probably 80 percent of how you look and feel and has a huge impact on your workouts, energy etc.

A few things with my general diet

The overall theme I have taken is from the abs diet that mens health produced. 6 small meals a day, lots of complex carbs and lean meats. It works pretty well for me and I usually have dinner at 5 and a small snack before bed.

I am also though adding a twist into what I take, and that is with hemp protein smoothies. For the longest time I have really been unable to take whey protein because the big side effect for me would be awful breakouts on my skin. For some reason whey=my face exploding. So now I am utilizing all natural organic hemp protein, which apparently has some great benefits and will see how that does.

The plan will be to have the smoothie for lunch, along with right after my workout. Strawberries, bananas, blueberries, milk, coconut oil (which has some great nutritional benefits as well) and the protein powder. So we'll see how it does.

Does anyone else have any experience with hemp protein, or "alternative" nutritional products in general?

Saw a thread called diet thread and figured I'd just say whats a norm meal for me at home...

I buy individual wrapped chicken breasts. I'll throw one or two on my george foreman grill, cut up some peppers (yellow/red/green) with some asparagus and toss that on the grill. In about 5-8 minutes I have a very lean meal going for me. And I always have fresh packaged spinach.

Don't drink any soda, only thing I drink is fat free milk and water.

I also do a protein smoothie (bananas, strawberries, whey, flax seed meal, raw bee pollin , L-Carnitine, and a powdered green vegitable product who's brand I can't remember right now) every morning. Add to that Co-Q10, a saw palmetto product, Milk thistle, ginko, kryolic garlic and a quality muiti vitamin. I've been taking most of these for 20 years, but only 12 years for the raw bee pollin, before that I used celltech bluegreen algae.

If you want to try to reduce your calorie intake while getting your protein in, try using Metabolic Reset instead of the normal whey protein. For 2 scoops, you get 23 grams of protein and only 130 calories and it keeps you full for at least 2 hours, if not longer. I like to take it in the early afternoon when I get hungry quicker for a greater impact. It is a bit pricy but Whole Foods has a sale on it right now for $32.

SHF- Are you taking any supps that boost testosterone? That seems a more likely candidate for your acne issue than the whey. If the reaction you are having is more like an allergic reaction, maybe try other brands of whey if you haven't already. There are significant differences between brands (from personal experience). Optimum Nutrition is my all time favorite.

Too bad you cannot consume whey because it is the best protein bar none IMO. I would try switching to a different brand to see if that helps. Try Perfect Meal from Garden of Life. It's excellent. Jay Robbs is good too.

Hydrolyzed whey is very good IMO from my reading 45 minutes prior to workout and immediately after.

A quality whey concentrate, undenatured and from grass fed cows is outstanding and immuno-supportive.

If you still cannot use whey stick with the hemp or try rice protein. I would avoid soy protein.

Gaspari Nutrition makes some good products. I love super-pump 250.

I don't use protein supplements usually. And when I do, I use soy.

I'm allergic to whey and casein. And for me, it's not necessary to use protein anyways.

I think people get too caught up in how much protein they need to take in. Eat protein, a good portion of it and you should be okay. Some people make being healthy very difficult on themselves.

Sure, it would be great to get 1.5g per pound of lean body mass, but its not always possible...

And in my PERSONAL experience that much isn't necessary. Although I'm not far below that number.

My Schedule:

5/6am - wakeup

12pm - water

6pm - Chickfila - Spicy Chicken sandwich, french fries, sweet tea

12am - Sleep

I don't know how honest this was... Or if you were trying for a cheap chuckle, but if this is accurate this isn't in the least bit healthy and you should probably look into changing it, regardless on if you're trying to get a better physique or not.

:ols: It was half and half...thats a pretty normal day for me. Youre right, I probably should change things, but being a college student and working part time makes things difficult.

That's an awful lot of protein.

Not really. It depends on the individual and how active they are. Guys do take things to the extreme though. That sounds pretty solid overall diet wise IMO. I try to get that much too. I'm 6'1 245lbs and am trying to maintain some semblance of muscle mass as I get older. Ain't easy.

I probably tried every form of whey, every brand possible. It was always the same result, about 2 weeks later my face would just go nuts. Otherwise my skin is pretty good. I don't use any testostorne booster or anything crazy, just a protein supplement to my normal 6 meals a day diet

I am going to be experimenting with the hemp protein and see how that goes. I have read some very good things about hemp and the amino acids it contains

I agree, although it does depend on the person I suppose. I notice my energy and results in the gym are better after consistant protein supplements. More so, I know it helps burn fat, and my goal is really to be in the 165-170 range and be super lean. Right now I am about 175 give or take a pound and at about 12 percent body fat (would like to get that down to about 8)

My workouts are plenty solid, so I know its the diet that will make the difference :)

I do the anything-is-okay-in-moderation diet.

And it is. I do the same.

I spent most of 2009 without eating candy/chips/fast food, etc

At the beginning of 2010, I would cheat every now & then & have a Cheez it, or some candy. Nothing changed for the worse. I didn't put on any of the weight I lost last year. And I'm not even working out right now (I refuse to run in the winter, too damn cold).

Moderation is key. If you want a twix bar, eat it. Just don't eat one every damn day.....

OK, I know most of you in this thread are fitness gurus, so you're all about protein, and maximizing muscle gain and all that stuff. I respect that very much, but I have the opposite problem.

I had a medical issue Thursday, and was hospitalized Thursday and Friday.

Basically, the doc told me "You can either change your lifestyle, or you'll be having a major stroke."

I had a TIA. (Transitory Ischemic Attack, or ministroke.) I'm fine now, but I need to take off some serious weight, quickly, but in a healthy way. I counted calories about 2 years ago, and lost nearly 50 pounds; until I got lazy again, and put it all back on.

I'm going to do some serious research to improve my lifestyle greatly. But if you guys have any ideas for rapid weight loss that won't fluctuate my blood sugar too much, or have other adverse affects, I'd really like to hear them.

One solution is not eating dinner after 6 pm. I always suggest that.

Cut out refined sugar, sweets, chocolate, soda, etc.

And then pretty much eat like a caveman, lean meats, fruits and veggies in small portions

A typical day for me is as follows

9am Breakfast - oatmeal with peanut butter and a touch of honey, glass of OJ, and sometimes a hardboiled egg

10am Snack - chocolate cliff kids z-bar + green tea

12-1pm Lunch - one of the meals below + milk and fruit

5-6pm Dinner - one of the meals below + ice cream (1/2 to 1 cup of edy's tagalong :)) (there are like 130 cals in just 1/2 cup, lol)

9pm Snack - fruit

On workout days I add a banana (between weights and cardio) and a whey shake post-workout.

On the weekends I have a bigger breakfast - usually scrambled eggs w/ cheese + toast or roasted potatoes. And I'll add in bigger snacks if I'm hungry during the day.

Lunch and dinners kind of rotate around a few options depending on what I have in the fridge/pantry and what's on sale at the store:

-turkey, spinach, tomato, honey and avocado sammich on nine grain bread

-spinach, tomato, and carrot salad with 2 hard boiled eggs

-tilapia with black beans, brown rice, and salsa plus broccoli or brussel sprouts (just recently started eating them, actually really like them!)

-steak, chicken, or shrimp stir fried with veggies and low sodium soy sauce, over brown rice

-baked and shredded mexican seasoned chicken with black beans, salsa, and cheese, with broccoli or brussel sprouts

-smoked turkey sausage, lentil, carrot, and celery soup

-turkey spaghetti with wheat pasta

edit: and add in some roasted sweet potatoes a couple times a week :)

Makes sense.....Not eating after 6 could be a little tough, but when I do, I'll try to snack better (fruit, etc).

I've only had 620 calories today. I'm gonna have a decent, healthy dinner, but I'm going to try to stick to that 1700 calorie net for as long as I can, then increase it a bit to maintain. (Down the road, of course.)

It varies, but I take my breakfast regiment very seriously. I always pound a jug of water right away and get my belly full of chow immediately. Gotta have a coffee with no sugar. I like to have a brief workout in the morning (20 minutes) and have a power bar and nutritional shake right afterward.

Lunch I have whatever I can find. Hell, even a doughnut if I have no other choice.

After work I eat, wait 30 minutes, work out for 30 minutes to an hour then eat a big ass meal right away. It usually involves meat and vegetables, sometimes pizza cuz it's tasty. Then I'll have another meal later in the night.
