Looking For Number Four
Like most, I thought Campbell's numbers were not exceptional but not bad. Little did I know: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb Player Team DYAR Rk YAR Rk DVOA Rk VOA Passes Yards EYds TD FK FL INT C% J.Campbell WAS 337 20 380 20 -1.7% 24 -0.5% 555 3,363 3,340 20 6 3 14 65.1% For those of you yet to catch on to sabermeterics, or just don't care: The other statistic given is DVOA, or Defense-adjusted Value Over Average. This number represents value, per play, over an average quarterback in the same game situations. The more positive the DVOA rating, the better the player's performance. Negative DVOA represents below-average offense. DVOA (and its cousin, VOA, which isn't adjusted based on opponent) is further explained here. Basically, the fact Campbell faced such terrible defenses his mediocre numbers are actually terrible. VOA, which is not adjusted, is even horrid- -0.5%. His DYAR comes in as the 20th best QB in the league: Quarterbacks are ranked according to DYAR, or Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement. This gives the value of the quarterback's performance compared to replacement level, adjusted for situation and opponent and then translated into yardage. DYAR (and its cousin, YAR, which isn't adjusted based on opponent) is further explained here. As always, we will resort back to blaming the line (which does deserve a great amount of blame) and Zorn's play calling; however, at this stage in his career, even with those aspects taken into consideration, should he not have been better than 20? Personally, I think Clausen is a getting a raw deal and should be one of the top 10 picks. My football analyst idol, K.C. Joyner (aka Guru of all that is football) agrees: http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft10/insider/news/story?id=4872130 Though I see Bradford's upside as extraordinary, I think Jimmy will be a top 10 QB for many years in this league, if he manages to avoid Oakland. With scouts, McShay in particular, ranking Clausen out of the 1st round we could easily trade back, grab picks, and still get a shot at a potential franchise QB. I hope you all remember Rodgers falling to the 23rd pick, right before we took Campbell. Just saying.
Hunter_R
It should come as no shock except to a few around here.
PCS
To answer the initial question. Yes. And a quick search for just the past month netted several results that say so. http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?t=317530&highlight=DVOA http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?t=316697&highlight=DVOA Coincidentally enough,2 of the threads dealt with Jason Campbell. http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?p=7260541&highlight=DVOA#post7260541 Most recently, here. http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?p=7312950&highlight=DVOA#post7312950 Which is where you should have put the OP of this thread. Which by the way,has a title that isn't completely in coherence with the Rules and Guidelines.
