Slingin33
I heard the store is closed today and they have almost nothing left in the building anymore. Anyone know what is up?

smoreese
I was at the store in Md today and they said that the store in Va is out of business. Guess it didn't do well down there. Sad to hear that more small store going under in this economy.

Sad to hear that more small store going under in this economy. They came down with higher prices than the Card Cellar which is a store that has been down here for almost 20 years. Don't want to see anyone fail, but they can't be surprised.

I have seen them at multiple shows standing in line getting orders signed for their customers. I would never question an item from their store. Too bad they weren't successful in VA. Slingin33
I agree they are reputable. I think most of us collectors bought from them when they did the Sammy Baugh things. My problem with them was they had autograph guests. Most of the Redskins they brought in had already been in Fredericksburg. Sports Card Heroes prices for them were higher than the other places. Ned Flanders
That's too bad their Va store closed........They are definitely reputable, and very nice people to deal with. I still want one of their "50 Greatest" Redskins autographed posters.......
mcarey032
That is too bad about them closing. I have bought a couple of things from their online side. I agree that if you are going to compete with another store that is in the area, you need to at least have the same prices or lower to stay in business. It made no sense to have guests, virtually and have slightly higher prices. I wonder how the other store is doing because they haven't had in store guest in Maryland for a while now. Slingin33
I would bet the MD store is doing fine. They always bring guys to CSA and they also do all of the other big shows.

Maybe they facilitate the signings at other shows, but they haven't had in store guest in quite a while. I want to say it was like last spring or something like that. I am also shocked that SCH store didn't last more than a year. I know that their prices were higher, but I thought that they woudl have made a go of it longer. I guess the economy hit them hard too. Before they opened the store here in VA, I would complain on this site about them having higher prices. I would be berated by people saying that since SCH was in MD, it was a higher rent district. Then SCH tried coming down here and competing with a local shop and tried to bring in their higher prices than the Card Cellar. I knew that cow would give any milk. I have been buying from Bart at the Card Cellar for years, and just couldn't see why SCH would even try.:beatdeadhorse:

I also don't pay close attention to pricing. All I know is I have seen the SCH guys in line at shows with boxes of jerseys, pics, helmets, etc. I have never done it but I would trust them with getting an item signed for me....which is a rarity these days. Regardless of pricing, in any economy it's hard for shops like this to stand up and survive. Once people feel comfortable going to one place, they tend not to switch so to speak. I am sure there timing didn't help.

I do think that the cost of living in Maryland, where they are located is higher than it is in Fredricksburg. That being said, you can't bring higher prices into a market having virtually the same exact sort of merchandise and expect to be successful. You have to have equal pricing or even lower pricing than established stores, because you won't get any business if you are at a higher rate. It is basic economics. I have bought from SCH, in the past and they haven't done me wrong, but I agree with you on the higher pricing when it comes to their guests. They should have thought that one through a little better.
