I was watching NFL draft lab on ESPN and Todd McShay said he really liked Ryan Matthews and that he would do great in a zone blocking scheme, and since we are changing to a zone blocking scheme I just thought he would be perfect, he also likes a running back named Montario Hardesty from Tennessee because he reminds him of Clinton Portis, and said he will be a sleeper and since shanahan drafted Portis and he excelled in this zone blocking system maybe Hardesty will get some attention.

Wow, you learned how to post a poll that quick? I got a feeling TK might be teaching you about something else soon. :)

PS - Love that you rated your own thread five stars. Killer, dude, killer.

HaHa, new to this site, but thanks, oh and I loved how you replied to this thread only to joke it and not really give any insight on the matter, the PS is amazing too.

I wish everyone would stop worrying about RB for a moment. We can't rebuild this team in a year. Portis will still be the starter, we'll still have Betts, Cartwright, Ganther and Aldridge. Build the line and the RB's we have will succeed in the ZB system. OL, future QB, LB and FS are the most important upgrades we can do this year.

Man I wish we had that 3rd rd pick, so virtually every RB would be available to us in their designated position. Damn you Vinny!!! Oh and I like Matthews, but Jahvid Best is my guy

I like Jahvid Best as well, but he is injury prone. Only other problem is that both Matthews and Best will be gone before round 3.. We need to find a quality back in later rounds.

I agree with you but if in the lower rounds we can find a RB whose talent/grade vastly outweighs other positions I don't mind making that "value pick."

RB is a position that can usually step in right away and hits their prime the earliest then falls off a cliff. There is no point in starting that process untill we have other appropriate pieces in place.

I agree with cant rebuild in a year, and yes Portis will be starter, but Betts is coming off surgery and Cartwright is more of a special teams guy and Ganther probably wont be with us.. I like Portis/Alridge combo, but would be nice to get a good RB of future in this draft, there is alot of quality backs.. We do need OL, and QB, and FS.. I say use 4th on Okung and then address everything else, I really like Dan Lefevour or John Skelton in later rounds for QB. We only have 5 picks and I dont want us to strikeout using our first on clausen or bradford both who are injured. what do you think?

I personally feel that RB is more of a need than people think. We really don't have that gamebreaker back there that can take it to the house from 40 yards out. Heck, we don't have someone to take it in from 20.

Don't draft one early, but draft one somewhere and make sure he's got wheels. Not sure if Matthews or Hardesty fit the profile.

Agree with you on Best but I do think grabbing Jarmon where we did was a good move. I think he's versatile and he'll contribute this year.

Depends on the round. I'd like to take care of QB, OL, OL and LB with our 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th round picks. That leaves us with our 7th rd. Don't know what kind of value we can get in the last round. Save RB for 2011 when Portis is off the books and we can get a good back in the 2nd rd next year.

I think if Bradford is there, Shanny will take him and go OL in the 2nd. If Clausen is there and Bradford is gone (Rams), I think they trade down. I just think RB isn't a "pressing" need in this draft especially when we only have 5 picks. And Betts is ahead of schedule on his rehab.

Our line probably had the worst year run blocking that I've seen in a while. Portis did break off a 78 yarder this year and Ganther had a couple of nice runs at the end of the season. Revamp the line, install the ZB scheme and I think the RB's will be solid this year. Something tells me Portis bounces back. Not talking 1500 yards, but he could be back over 1200. Shanny knows how to use him and I think all the players as a whole are excited about Shanny's/Kyle's offense.

I think Mathews is a great prospect and will be a very good NFL RB. But if we wanted him we would have to take him with our 2nd round pick. No way he gets past the 2nd. Not sure I'd want them to use that high of a pick on an RB. But I would bank on him being a better overall pro back than Spiller or Best.

I saw the end of this piece also, regarding Hardesty, (and wondered when we'd have a thread on him because McShay said he reminded him of CP :ols: ) I can see where he had a good year for TN, but hasn't he really only played one year? I mean (1) year of work is hard to judge the next superstar, or next bust.

Also, everyone keeps saying that we're changing to a zone blocking scheme, but i read in the BMW interview thread the other day where BMW indicated "he's comfortable in the ZB scheme, because that's primarily what we did all last year"

Maybe someone can clarify that for me?

To be fair he was behind Arian Foster until last year, and had knee injury earlier in his career at Tennessee. Hard to gain many yards when you don't get the carries.

he tore it up last season against quality opponents an against the SEC. Getting stronger as the season progressed.

I remember seeing Hardesty in one game last year, can't remember what team they were playing, but he was on beast patrol. I immediately thought of him in a Skins uni tearing it up. Admittedly I don't know much about him, aside from that one game but if he's around in the later rounds for the Skins to pick up, I think he may be the type of back we're looking for to replace CP.

Obviously we have pressing needs such as OL and QB, but RB is also a need and if in the later rounds (something like the 3rd round that we hopefully we get via trade, or in the 4th round) the options are to reach on an O-lineman or take an RB who may prove to be a huge longterm upgrade to our backfield, I say make the move.

Edit: Apparently Ryan Matthews is quickly moving up draft boards, so it's unlikely we'll get him unless we want to take him with our second, which I'd personally rather use on OL.

Yea I agree with almost everything you said, but I dont think we should take a QB in round 1 or 2.. I think we can find a good QB for this system in the 4th round or 5th, (Dan Lefevour, John Skelton or maybe Matt Nichols.) rather take a chance with one of them, then wasting a first on bradford or clausen..

I would love for us to get Mathews. The guy just has it and you can tell. He may not run a 4.28 40 like a Spiller or a Best but he is very explosive when he hits a hole, has excellent vision, and great lateral movement. Especially for a 220 lb guy. My ideal draft would be if someone that SF was in love with fell to us and we managed to get their two 1st rounders. With those pick up a guy like Bulaga for LT with the first one then Iupati with the second 1st rounder. Then with the 2nd rounder we might be able to afford to get Mathews.
