rincewind
Seriously, the History Channel is to history what MTV is to music. I'm sure shows like Ax Men, Ice Road Truckers, Dirty Jobs, and that Pawn shop show have a place on TV - they just shouldn't be on the History Channel. Even all those shows about the beginning of the universe would be better placed on a science channel. Hell, they even have shows about the future. Makes me miss the days of the Hitler Channel.
zoony
History International is now the go to channel. Do you get that one? 271 on DirecTV I'm kind of with you- what I really don't like is all the UFO bs. I miss a lot of the strict history shows. And Modern Marvels is getting a bit played out. But don't hate, Pawn Stars is awesome. It's like the redneck version of Antique's Roadshow
fullnelson9999
Not at all. Discovery, Travel, TLC...all seem to be going the MTV way..and I hate it.
Destructis
I miss it a lot. I loved the shows about WWII and WWI. Dogfights used to be my favorite show there and I even have the DVD set. I also really like The Universe when they would talk about the big bang and stuff. Now they just make **** up like the end of the world in 2012. It used be based on facts, not so much anymore. Unfortunately, I only have basic cable. So no Hist. International or Military History. Modern Marvels is weird - they'll have shows about Roman inventions. Destructis
The Military channel is all kinds of awesome. It makes digital cable worth having. If I can't find something that interests me on TV, I just automatically turn it to that channel and am rarely disappointed.
GibbsFactor
Yeah, I feel ya. I have to go with HistoryI Science or NatGeo anymore. Discovery and History are all about reality shows now. Sad.
Runs with Scissors
I agree,I wonder if its the same people who ruined TV Land?By putting reality shows on there, and constantly promoting them. What's with all the Ghosts/Haunted House shows on cable? I don't know if the History Channel shows any,but there seems to be a lot of them. headexplode
Do I miss all the overt corporate propaganda? Not exactly. However, what they've replaced it with seems to be almost pure nonsense, so I guess the old History Channel was better than the current one. rincewind
Y'all can like Pawn Stars as much as you want - I just don't think it belongs on the History Channel. Though, at least some of the stuff on there has historical value.
Spartacus87
A little too much conspiracy theory and paranormal science stuff on the History Channel these days for my liking. I think Monster Quest is the dumbest show they have. I feel like the History Channel really started going off the rails around the time The Da Vinci Code movie came out, and they started showing a lot of specials on that topic. On the other side of things, Animal Planet is a million times better than it was a few years ago, and A&E has some great shows as well. I could watch Intervention and Hoarders all day. G.A.C.O.L.B.
This thread makes me feel so much better about myself. I wasn't sure if I should be embarrassed or not about liking Pawn Stars. Am I the only one? Now I feel like I can finally reveal my fandom. But yeah, History International is the goto for hardcore history stuff.
Chicken Fried
The Pawn Stars show is my favorite. I've learned more history on that than the other trash they used to have where they exaggerated and embellished everything.
Destino
Agreed... what happened to the tank channel? I used to turn to the history channel and learn everything you ever needed to know about tank combat. Now I get axe men... seriously AXE MEN?! Why on earth would anyone want to watch a show about people cutting down trees... what is next "lettuce men" taking us on a real life experience of migrant workers braving the heat to deliver crispy lettuce to our favorite grocery store? Pawn Stars is more interesting but I agree it doesn't belong on the history channel. It's actually not a bad show. My prediction: They will have a history themed ghost hunter show sooner or later. Mad Mike
I agree with the OP and Zoony. Hate the UFO stuff and conspiracy BS. Love Pawn Stars. On the bright side (I hope), word is that Top Gear America is back in play for the History Channel, but what it has to do with history, I have no idea. techboy
History International has been better for pure history shows for a long time, dating back to when History itself might as well have been the "WWII channel". They've got programs from all over the world, covering a diverse number of topics, and usually without the sensationalism and air of bad scholarship that pervades much of the stuff on History. It tends to be drier, more boring, better researched, and with better experts... better. I do love Pawn Stars, when I turn in on. I was just remarking to my wife that I don't know why I find it so compelling, but I do. It does have at least a little to do with history, as they often talk about the origins of an item (a couple of nights ago, they talked about cannon used at the battle of San Juan Hill). Ax Men is a joke, and the new "History: Made every day" tag doesn't excuse it. The Military History channel is also great, and much like what the old History Channel used to be, but we just got FIOS, and for us at least, there are no commercials. Anyone else have that going on? It's pretty nice, actually.
spjunkies
I shed tears every time I turn past that station. I tried watching "The Presidents" on Presidents Day and between showings they had a marathon of Pawn Stars. Ridiculous
mjah
I watched a couple of those Ghost Fakers shows when my daughter was in the hospital and I was sitting by her little crib all night long. I was already tense, sleep-deprived, and wired -- and the show still wasn't scary or even interesting. Not sure if they're all the same, but on this particular show some dudes sit around in an old jail/warehouse/castle all night while infrared cameras document the utter boredom. To punctuate the absolutely nothing which is actually happening, every so often one of the "experts" pretends to hear a "strange noise" and then they cut back to some intern sitting at a desk miles away supposedly watching a live feed, who furrows his brow and says, "What's that?" Then they spend a few minutes staring at a plot of the recorded "ghost noise" waveform on a computer screen, concluding absolutely nothing except that it's definitely a noise that sounds different from the total silence that preceded and followed it. Therefore it's a ghost, QED. Then the on-site "ghost experts" walk toward the noise and find nothing. Meanwhile, some other guys are sitting somewhere else in the building. One of them tosses his pen, always when the camera is conveniently not looking, and blames a ghost. The pen tossing, which the camera almost-but-not-quite captures due to an apparently never-ending streak of incredibly bad luck, is replayed about 17 times while the guy overdubs a narration describing how he most definitely did not toss that pen. He SO DID NOT toss that pen. Look at what the camera once again failed to document: a ghost did it! The end. Next episode: exactly the same thing but in a different prison/warehouse/castle. For some reason, every single person on the show looks like a Ravens fan. You can absolutely envision him in purple camo rooting for a stolen team on weekends. I really enjoy Pawn Stars, but before reading this thread I couldn't have even told you which channel it's on. I think that's part of History's problem: it's running some popular programs that don't fit on their channel any more than on Discovery, Learning, etc. It all runs together, and it destroys any channel loyalty that people like me would have had back in the days when Discovery was the Planet Earth Channel, History was the WWII Channel, and TLC was the People With Way Too Many Kids Channel. RLeVan
I agree to a certain extent. It's become a little bit too much fluff and not enough substance. I do enjoy the replay's of Band of Brothers though. I'm really digging the Military History channel since I really enjoy the WWII shows. The Goering/Nuremberg trial special was well done. In addition, the International History Channel probably offers the best all around programming. Thanks to FIOS, I bounce around between the Science Channel, International History, Military History, National Geo, and Smithsonian Channel. The Smithsonian Channel has the best HD picture quality of them all in my opinion, with the Science Channel coming in a close second.
zoony
Pawn Stars confirms that there are some real idiots out there. Amazing what people will sell things for. Anyone see the episode where that guy sold the original Shelby Cobra body for 30k right after he was told it was worth 50?
d0ublestr0ker0ll
I totally agree. Even as little as a couple years ago the History Channel was awesome. It's still good, but they really need to get away from the UFO, ghost and Monster Quest crap. Modern Marvels FTW.
