Mel Kiper's Mock Draft 2.0

If we have to take a QB I am leaning towards Clausen, mainly because of the pro style offense he played under in College. People forget that the worst case for a spread QB is a guy who cannot even get the QB Center exchange. There are personality issues with Clausen, and I wonder how much was him and how muc h was Tate

Another concern is that these QB's skip the combine and throw to their own receivers, but they won't be bringing these guys to the NFL with them. Personally i still prefer Davis and Brown to a QB/2nd Round LT though

Earl Thomas!!! He WILL be a premiere safety in the league. A quiet playmaker who has been compared to Ed Reed just like Eric Berry. Doesn't hit as hard, but can cover the same amount of ground. He'd be huge in our D.

A) Earl Thomas can't cover the same ground as Berry. I saw Thomas play a lot this past season and while he was a very good player, he's not in Berry's league.

B) How is that at all related to the Clausen post you quoted?

I doubt we take Clausen over Bradford, Bradford seems more like a Shanahan type of QB. But I think they have to consider O Line but not at 4. Trade down maybe if Buffalo wants Bradford and hope you can get Okung or Anthony Davis and stockpile a couple picks

Not at all. Bradford is solely a pocket passer. He can't move with his legs like Clausen. Clausen is pretty elusive in the pocket and he can throw very accurately on the run. I think we would pefer Clausen hands down. If you look at Plummer, Elway, Cutler, none of them are pure pocket passers.

Nope, I get the feeling he's more like Philip Rivers 2.0, fiery competitor, who doesn't shy away from a little **** talk (which in-turn causes people to hate on him), can make all the throws, has very good accuracy, good leadership ability, but with more mobility than Rivers.

I agree completely. O yeah Rivers was 4th overall too. JACKPOT :D

All this talk about Bradford or Clausen, and what gets lost in the mix is (I'm not really in support of this but it is out there) possibly using a late rounder Colt McCoy. After the championship game, all the talk about McCoy pretty much just turned off. Anyone heard anything about his draft status, or even support the Skins going later round on him?

McCoy is actually a very good prospect, but he has spent minimal time under center and he'd be a longer term project than either Bradford or Clausen. I think a team that can invest some time on him will have a really good QB on their hands in three years. He's a really bright kid who is highly motivated. Winningest College QB ever. He's got a lot to offer. Just not right off the bat.

The thing with Clausen not throwing over the middle is a concern, but it might be more systemic than anything else. If I recall, the Pats still run the same system on a fundamental level as they do with Weis, and they rely heavily on the quick slants and deep go routes with Welker and Moss (don't quote me on this - I haven't watched too many Pats games). Maybe Weis decided a similar setup would work for Clausen.

I'm just conjecturing to put it in a better light because I'm a Clausen at #4 homer.

Way too much is being made of this mock. Kiper is a big ND fan, and he loves Clausen... Kiper is also a close friend of Vinny, Imo Vinny has told him we are looking to go QB at 4...Just like he told Clayton and Mortenson.

This. I am so glad that Kiper doesn't pick for us, or Vinny/Dan either anymore. Kiper is doing his best to hype Clausen. I would be sad if this mock were to become reality. I think it would extinguish the light at the end of the tunnel that just recently became visible for me.

If Bradford is graded as the number one QB by our FO, we do not under any circumstances trade him. If we are thinking QB in this draft at any round (and I am not sure why we wouldn't), we need to get the absolute best QB in the draft, not someone who we grade as almost as good and an extra pick. Priority #1 is finding a franchise QB if we are serious about long term success.

Your scenario only works if they honest to god rate Clausen over Bradford. Then I am ok with that. None of this, "well, we can just take Lefevor or Pike in the second, he'll be just as good" bullhonky. We don't need just as good, we need the best, and hopefully for the first time in nearly 20 years we'll have a franchise QB.

Also, I think the #4 for the #6 and #14 doesn't quite add up on the trade value chart.

bingo!

This is exactly what I think. We haven't had a franchise qb since I've been a fan. Direct corrolation to our W-L record.

He watched an NFL network segment where one the guys said essentially the exact same thing.

I did? Seriously? Wow, you must have been looking in my living room window.....

Except for the fact I dont get the NFL Network. :pfft:

I'm just very familiar with the Clausen family. Jimmy's two older brothers went to UT (which is my college team) and while they were in college, Jimmy was already getting alot of coaching from private QB coaches. I though Casey (the eldest of the 3) would turn out to be a pretty good pro QB but it didnt happen. Rick was a transfer from LSU but wasnt the QB Casey was. That and I remember the hoopla around Marinovich, AKA RoboQB because he had been groomed since birth. Hence the comparison.
