Sorry if this has been posted - couldn't get the search to work.

March 14th is the premire of HBO's second miniseries about WWII - The Pacific. Personally, I think that the original miniseries was the greatest piece of visiual media ever created and I am psyched for this. Looks like there will be more full scale battle scenes (including Iwo Jima) in this one. Interested to see how they show the amount of blood and gore that was involved in the Pacific battles.

Band of Brothers made me so proud to be an American.

It is a piece of art and quite possibly one of the greatest war films/miniseries ever.

Visually stunning and realistic.

HBO truly outdid themselves with Band of Brothers and I'm pumped to see The Pacific.

Here is the official website for those interested:

There's a few videos on there.

I loved when they showed the guys who the stories were actually about. Seeing those men and seeing how much they achieved after the war was impressive. There is a reason they called them the greatest generation. I hope one day we can rival them again.

Just curious how others feel this has stood up to the test of time. I know I still look forward to BoB marathons during Veterans' and Memorial Day. But can only manage a "Oh yeah, they made The Pacific" when I see it.

I kinda feel it was just flat out bad.

Band of Brothers was definitely the better of the two. The thing is, while they were both about the war, they were both aimed at different things. Band of Brothers was really about the brotherhood of the soldiers, while The Pacific was more about the atrocity of war. It was much more graphic and brutal, and delved into the impact it has on the soldiers fighting it.

I didn't care for it either and felt it was nowhere near as good as Band of Brothers.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I really enjoy reading WWII books. Both the Pacific and European theaters of war.

For anyone interested in the Naval war in the Pacific, I highly recommend reading Neptune's Inferno: The US Navy at Guadalcanal, by James D. Hornfischer. It's an incredible account of the birth (and near death) of the US Pacific fleet, the battle of Guadalcanal, and the aftermath of battle decisions made by several officers. A really incredible account of the Pacific war in the late summer/early fall of 1942.

Band of Brothers was better in character development. You cared about them and when one of them got killed, it would sadden you. In The Pacific, with the exception of one character, I didn't feel much of anything when they got killed. There was violence in both, but in BoB, there were a lot more quiet moments where you got to know the people.

Wasn't the Pacific based on more than one book? That might have been the problem. It did jump around to a few different storylines. Band followed Easy for that whole time even if one episode was more about a specific person.

I have to catch myself and not say "character" since both were based on real heroes.
