ljs
just saw this on the AP wire... http://www.startribune.com/sports/olympics/84249987.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiUg7Kk8P3iUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aULPQL7PQLanchO7DiUr VANCOUVER, British Columbia - An Olympic official with direct knowledge of the situation says a men's luger from the former Soviet republic of Georgia has died after a crash during training. The official tells The Associated Press that the International Olympic Committee received confirmation of Nodar Kumaritashvili's death. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the 21-year-old luger's family hadn't been notified yet. An official statement is to be released soon. Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled near the finish Friday, went over the track wall and struck an unpadded steel pole near the finish line at Whistler Sliding Center. MattFancy
I just saw this on Twitter. That's pretty crazy! If I was a luger there is no way I'm going down that track. They say its the fastest track in the world, but this might force them to change something. I feel bad for him and his family.
Aruna
Crash video is on huffington post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/12/nodar-kumaritashvili-cras_n_460474.html), really disturbing watch. You would think the tracks are designed in way that things like this wouldn't be able to happen. R.I.P.
zoony
why is there an unpadded steel pole at the end of the track? Very sad news, guy gets to compete at something he's spent his entire life training for and he dies the day before. Very sad- Olympics should not be about tragedy. MattFancy
why is there an unpadded steel pole at the end of the track? That's a very good question. If it that close to the track they should have some type of padding around it.
SKINS@THEGOALLINE
Kumaritashvili was estimated to be going over 93 miles per hour near the end of the course where he went off the track. Horrible!

Those poles need to not even be there. very sad It is amazing how fast he is going. Wow
China
After viewing that video it appears there is a whole row of unpadded steel poles. They need to rectify that ASAP.

Enter Apotheosis
Wow... that's terrible. He got tossed out of his luge like a rag doll. Frankly, I don't know what excuse they could possibly have for having a series of steel poles at the end of a turn like that with absolutely no attempt at some sort of safeguard. armstrong001
Yeah, a padded pole at 90mph is going to do the same thing as an unpadded one. Should have the walls higher and curved in at the top like on the curves to keep crashes contained.
