ryanwade21
My friend asked me this the other day and for the first off season I wasn't exactly sure, so does anyone know any free agents were looking at or if were going to even be active. This question would of been extremely easier to answer years back when we publicly announced who we wanted and then went and spent anything to get them. Just trying to see if anyone knows anything, Thanks

jflow78
There is a guard from the Broncos, Ben Hamilton, who we might be looking at as a stop-gap in place of Randy Thomas. Another possibility is Karlos Dansby from Arizona, who plays inside LB for the Cardinals (in a 3-4). I don't know if that will happen, since we're likely to stick Rocky in at ILB with Fletcher, but it's a possibility. Chike Okeafor is another Cardinals LB (played OLB int he 3-4) that would make a lot more sense for us. He could fill in opposite Orakpo, and already has played in the 3-4 (Carter hasn't, and then we could still use Carter in a pass-rushing utility type position, move him around and create mismatches and a little confusion). He IS older though, and would be another stop-gap player, until we could get somone young to replace him, but at least it would give our D enough time to get used to the new defense, and he'd be able to help out the other LBs with the transition. We might look at resigning Levi Jones (also as a stop-gap, most likely for a rookie), since there aren't a lot of other options out there and we can't guarantee that any rookie we pick up in the draft will be ready to start at LT from day 1. Jeremy Bridges is another option at LT (he started there for the Cardinals this year), but he's 330 pounds, not the stereotypical Shanahan offensive linemen. Julius Peppers is probably a name that will begin showing up a lot. He's big enough to play DE in a 3-4 (283 pounds) and is one of the biggest FA names this year (which means we'll inevitably be tied to him, whether or not we're interested). Casey Hampton is another guy (NT Pittsburgh), he's been a great NT for a decade and if we were to sign a guy who can hold down the middle, like he can, Big Al could move to DE and eat OL alive (in between taking himself out of the game). Ryan Pickett, Green Bay's NT, is another one, and he wouldn't cost as much, and is 2 years younger (this is the guy I'd try to get). You might hear that we try to sign Aaron Kampman (DE/LB for the Packers) but ignore it (if we sign him we're idiots) he's older, and he was really bad in the 3-4 for the Packers, great in a 4-3, awful in a 3-4, and ended up getting benched in place of one of their rookies from this years draft (they seemed to have had a really solid draft last year). Leigh Bodden is another guy that comes to mind, CB Patriots (6'1" 193, and 28 years old, 55 tackles and 5 INTs last season). He's played in a 3-4 (not that anything really changes for CBs from 3-4 to 4-3, but who knows, maybe it will help), and it would releive us of being forced to sign Rogers to a long term deal (though I thought CR has done fantastic in spots, he just can't catch). I'm sure we'll look long and hard at Dunta Robinson too, (CB Texans) but Bodden isn't going to cost nearly as much, and with DHall on such a large salary, I can't imagine we'll sign someone for even more money (which I think Robinson will demand). Ryan Clark is a possibility at FS (Stealer's FS), which would allow Landry to move back to SS. We could also steal Sean Jones away from Philadelphia, (FS 6'1", 220 and 27 years old). He played well in spots (from what I saw) and has 16 INTs in the 5 seasons he's started. He's also got pretty good speed, and when he was with the Browns, he had two fantastic seasons, 06 and 07, where he had a total of 207 tackles and 10 INTs, over the two years. The problem is, without a CBA, our options are extremely limited on offense. So, I see us signing more defensive talent, to help switch over to 3-4, since that group is a lot better in this years FA crop. I think our draft, after that, will end up being mostly spent on offensive pieces, a QB, OT/G/C, RB (not in that order). Hope this helps.
Hitman21ST
There's talk about Antonio Pierce, too. On the ESPN.com rumors page a couple days back, they were saying that the Giants might release Kenny Phillips and the Bears might release Hunter Hillenmeyer, so we might take a look at those two if they are released. Good response JFLOW........ once RFA's get non tendered and the free agent pool expans there are going to be so many more names that hit this list but this was a pretty good summary as to who might be out there and who we may target. I, for one, nominate JFLOW for front office should Allen fall into the Vinny Cerrato trap.

jflow78
It's been said many times before but I'll say it again... Peppers would not play DE in a 3-4. He'd be an oversized OLB. I agree that he's about 15-20 pounds short of your prime candidate for a quicker, smaller, 3-4 DE, and for that reason (and that I think he's going to be insanely overpriced in this year's bear market) I don't think we should sign him. Having said that, the Jets two starters at DE are both under 300, (Marques Douglas 290, Shaun Ellis at 285), Arizona's Calais Campbell is 290 (LDE in their 3-4) and Darnell Dockett is 285 (RDE in their 3-4), Baltimore's Trevor Pryce is 290 (LDE). I'm not saying that's the ideal situation, but obviously it can work, but I don't think it's a long term fix. I also don't think he's going to make the transition to OLB at this point in his career. I was just trying to list every possibility, and you know that we, at some point, will inevitably be "linked" to him in some way. Some story will come out saying we want him. Good response JFLOW........I, for one, nominate JFLOW for front office should Allen fall into the Vinny Cerrato trap. Thanks for all the love guys. I guess I should stay home from school everyday. darklight1216
That's a good post Jflow, but alot of thos guys are not big enough names to win you that Offseason Championship. I keep hoping that the Redskins will trade us some picks for McGahee. He's older and on a decline... that will probably be tempting to Snyder, right? SkinSince87
Lets not forget Vince Wilfork very doubtful and not needed also there is Richard Seymour 30yrs (6' 6", 310) who is a DE who very experienced in the 3-4 DE/DT positions. Dunta Robinson's 27yrs (5'10", 184) name has popped up the CB for the Texans. Larry Foote 27yrs (6'1" 239) the former Steelers LB recently with the Lions is an experienced 3-4 LB also. SkinnedAussie
If the year continues as rumoured - uncapped - it won't be a case of who are we looking at, but more a case of all free agents will come looking for us. They will be lined up 4 deep at Coach Shanahan's door looking for that one big pay day.
LongLostSkin
Joey Porter was released by the Dolphins today. With us likely moving to a 3-4 defense we could use a proven pass rusher to help ease the defense into that scheme. I definitely don't want us to break the bank on him, but a short veteran contract could be a good investment.

SkinnedAussie
Pittsburgh have stated that Ryan Clark is one of three priority re-signings, preferably before free agency starts. There has also been a mention that Dunta Robinson will be franchise tagged. Leigh Bodden is asking $5 - $8 mill per year. As I mentioned, if it's an uncapped year, the free agents will come to us looking for that one last huge pay day.
