Being that he is trying to advance Obama's and the Democrats agenda, he actually used the word correctly did he not? For Palin or anyone think he made this comment (behind closed doors) to insult the truly mentally handicapped is ridiculous IMO. If the Republicans are putting their chip's behind her - she/they will fail BIG, stand by for another term of Obama.

LoL

I guess Im not educated or sensible enough not to laugh at this. But Im around disabled kids all the time and some of them are the most wonderful people I have ever met.

How could I not be offended by this? I would pretty much do anything for those kids.

#1 words dont hurt me like they hurt some people

#2 The word wasnt aimed at them and really has nothing to do with them.

Exactly. I use to teach special ed kids and have a cousin with down syndrome and use the word retarded all the time. Palin is trying to draw attention to herself -- again -- and looking like a fool -- again -- in the process.

Palin is a Nit Twit. She has said so many "bad" words you freakin know it.

I cant wait for her to slip up and say something that she will get attacked for.

As a liberal, I used to tell the Repubs and Conservs that they needed to be honest when one of their own screwed up. I say the same to you.

My guess is that Palin had a reaction to hearing this that was real and then decided she could score points off of it. Neither a noble defense nor a purely political action, but somewhere inbetween.

Rahm is guilty of using poor wordchoice and he ought to be corrected for it. He doesn't need excuses made for him, he shouldn't be fired, and this shouldn't haunt his career, but it was an unfortunate choice of words that are deemed hurtful. He deserves his slap on the wrist.

Rahm can be a coarse mouthed doofus. This was one of those times. He's also a fine man and a good politician.

More pseudo outrage from the Right.

Wrong- coming from someone who's niece died of a disbility- it is offensive and coming from someone in his position- behind closed door or speech- is not smart.

If anyone, especially in management, in my prior company said that word or phrase- they would be fired.

More pseudo outrage from the Right.

see below

Now why would you believe that a parent of a child with disabilities would have "pseudo outrage"?

Of course hat would upset her.

I've actually been trying really hard to stop using the terms "moron, retard and gay", because they are really offensive to people, for no good reason.

Calling someone gay when your real meaning is idiot or stupid, is offensive to many gay people. We are not idiots or stupid. I'm not as much anymore; desensitized over the last few years of hearing it. I use the word Lesbian Because its one you can't steal the meaning of .:silly:

Call me cynical, but if I was deeply offended by what someone said I'd call them or write a personal letter. Claiming outrage in a Facebook posting? Seriously. :ols:

She uses her face book page like some use websites. I think its more effective. (or affective?)

Oh, and I'd be far more concerned that the kid has to go through life with the name "Trig."

Funny you say that, my best friend from high school- Trigg ( female) and everyone who knows her loved her name.

OK, but I think the forum matters some. Yahoo reports the same story with this quote.

"But a recently revealed remark he made in a closed-door meeting"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/ynews_pl1101

It was not like he was making a public speach or insulted the handicapped, he was insulting those within his own party at a "closed door meeting".

For those calling for his head, I assume you never said anything bad about someone or used a term some my find offensive?

And OBTW, I am no fan of his or Obama, I just hate hypocrisy from both parties.

For the Libs to speak out against the Dems I applaud. Although I don't subscribe to their politics I can relate to them stading up for what they believe. No different than folks like me who who consider themselves conservative yet to put it nicely "disapproved" of GWB's massive expanse of the federal govt and taking a budget surplus and turning it into the biggest deficit in history (Obama has since one upped him on deficits).

I agree with this a lot, however someone in his position should always be mindful of their words, and I agree with another post in here- the Dems are responsible for PC, they created this monster. But even before PC'ism, the word retarded was offensive to people. Besides my niece who died of a brain disability, I had a great aunt who was mentally handicapped. The word retarded was absolutely not allowed in our house, my mom would have spanked the hell outta me. And that was in the 70's/80's.(and my mom is a conservative)

I am covering an event at the Museum of the American Indian (Smithsonian) and after the interview I asked them about their feelings about the term "Redskins". Even though the recorder was off, there was a little bit of tap dancing and an effort by the speaker to make sure that it ws clear that they were stating their opinion and not the Museum's..

on a side note, just got home from visiting my dad, who lives along the Collville reservation in Washington, stopped on the res for gas, wearing my Burg/Gold sweats and my Redskins cap...I had to go inside the store, and it was the first time I was consciously nervous about someone getting offended by what I was wearing.

I am NO Sarah Palin fan, but I don't think she's faking outrage here. She is a parent of a special needs kid. As one myself I can tell you words like 'retard' sting quite a bit.

Calling for Emmanuel to be fired for saying something off the record is over the top, sure. I think that's because Palin as a talking head has an overdeveloped sense of drama. But I am sure she genuinely felt that what he said was hurtful.

I know I do.

glad I'm not the only one who see's this from a very personal perspective.

If you are hurt by someone using a word that was not directed at you I would say you might have problems.

like I said before, someone in his position needs to be more mindful of what they say. Very bad idea and while I'm not so sure he needs to be fired, I think he has every right to be totally criticized for it.

Let's say Rahm called her a F (gay word), would the gay population be mad about it?

Just being honest here, the reason why I say that is because I call my wife a F(gay word) every now and then when she is acting goofy.

Yes- I think there is a word rule to some extent. Black people call each other the N word- acceptable. If a white person calls them that, more than likely its not going to go over well. The word Fag, while not originally intended to mean gay, it has become over many years known as a derogatory/mean spirited word. Not even in the same ballpark as gay.

If Rahm used the F word, I would be livid, no doubt. And I would be even more livid if the gay lobby didn't also become outraged. Because I guarantee you that if a conservative or Repulican said it- they would be on fire.

Call your wife whatever you want- but you call me a fag and and I'll make a scene about it.

Actually, he did.....the whole quote was "F-ing retards"

:saber: you know I meant the fag F word...:silly:

I gotta add- a few years ago, out with some friends and we drove up to the gay bar, we all had a bit to drink already and yelled, "FAGS" out the window before we parked. There was crowd out front & they didn't recognize us...I thought were going to come try and kick our asses....but as we walked up a few people did recognize us and started laughing...so again, one thing to say it to your own kind, another if someone else calls you that.

Still, the fact that you are hoping that she slips up, really reflects a heavy bias against her.

dude im not a democrat or republican

I have no biased for her.

I dont like when people over react to words. I think it shows thin skin and really not understanding the intent behind the word.

Im hoping she slips up so she can say "well I didnt mean it like that" And she will learn a lesson. Problem is she still wont learn a lesson because some people lve in the

It's not a matter of political affiliation.

No-one should wish ill upon someone else, even if it's in order to teach them a lesson. People can learn, without having a major scandal go against them.

So maybe the word biased wasn't the proper word. Maybe insensitive, instead.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe you. If someone in management said, in a conference behind closed doors, that a bad idea for the company was "effing retarded," there is no chance that they would be fired for it. At most, someone would say: "Hey Jack, we don't use that word any more." If someone said anything at all.

Of course, it would be different if it was a speech or a public statement on behalf of the company or something. But that isn't what happened here.

I have heard scores of people use that word. I have heard a judge use it. No one gets fired for it. Maybe someday, but not now.

I was specifically ordered by a higher-up in my company NOT to use that word.

Not because I myself, has used it. But just as a warning, because of it happening elsewhere.

OK I know what you mean. Problem is it frustrates me when we freak out about little things like this. Palin will not learn this on her own. She might be a sweet woman she defenitly is hot but stop making issues out of small things.

What irratates me the most is people only get involved when it involves them.

People lose their minds over words and over react.

I don't understand why it's so terrible to tell someone when they've offended you. Wouldn't you like to know rather than to keep on doing it?

I agree that Palin is overreacting, but that doesn't change the fact that using 'retarded' or worse, 'REtard', as a derogatory term can be hurtful to people. Sorry you find that so irritating.

Here, let me show you how it's done: Those of you who, even after people in this thread have gone to legnths to explain WHY it is offensive to some of us, have made a point of using the word 'retard' in their posts ... that's not cool. I don't feel like pointing specific people out, but I was surprised at those of you who did it. I don't want anyone to get fired, but that was not cool at all.

It's a not so clever way of making a point, I agree. It comes off as spiteful.

Context is important. My bosses wife (lesbians) called me a fag the other day, because I was drinking tea and clipping coupons. I call my gay Dad a fag, every time he talks about how "masculine" he is at the gym. Something about that word is just so, um, gay.:ols:

Huh ???

Palin has yet to be attacked for something she said ?

Now, that's funny :ols:

Get off your cross that moron (am I allowed to say that?) isn't criticized any more heavily than anyone else. All politicians of consequence on the national stage get ripped apart. Bill Clinton, Al Gore, George Bush, Dick Cheney, Barack Obama, John Kerry, and hundreds more get ripped for everything they have said or done. Palin is no different, stop pretending she's singled out.

Bad word choice and he should perhaps apologize, but he's not the kind of person who would.

It's been stated before in the thread, but I can't get over how ironic it is that some people are upset about "retarded" on a Redskins board. Unless they also think our team's name should be changed they're possibly/likely being very hypocritical.

As for my views, I don't care if someone uses any words (well, most words, I am offended by some, but not retarded or Redskins). Those who take offense will react accordingly and if persuasive enough will bring change, those who don't will not care about it. I do feel for those who do take offense, but as I don't it's otherwise a minor issue, and I don't feel any particular responsibility to champion their cause. For that reason I don't mind Palin speaking out, because she probably is personally offended. I would mind if someone who didn't actually give a damn about the word spoke out on behalf of those who do, because he/she wouldn't have such a personal motive.

This is only for words, which don't have much impact on people's lives beyond giving them mental offense. For offenses in impactful areas I do champion causes that don't affect me personally.
