REDSKINS HIRE KEENAN McCARDELL AS WIDE RECEIVERS COACH

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have named Keenan McCardell as the team’s wide receivers coach.

McCardell, 40, spent 17 years playing the position in the National Football League, competing in 209 games, with 168 starts, and amassing 883 receptions for 11,373 yards, and 63 touchdowns. His reception total is 13th on the all-time list, while his receiving yardage total ranks 22nd.

“Keenan is an outstanding addition to our coaching staff. He has all the attributes that you look for in one to become an outstanding coach in the National Football League,” Redskins Executive Vice President/Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “Keenan has instant credibility with our players as someone who played in this league for 17 years, won two Super Bowls and played in multiple Pro Bowls. He will be able to pass along much of the knowledge and expertise he picked up throughout a great career.”

Upon finishing his playing career, McCardell began coaching by completing a Bill Walsh Minority Fellowship with the New York Giants during the team’s 2009 training camp. He also recently coached the West’s wide receivers in the 2010 East-West Shrine Game.

McCardell was drafted by the Redskins in the 12th round of the 1991 NFL Draft out of UNLV. He spent his rookie season on Injured Reserve for a club that would win Super Bowl XXVI. McCardell came full circle by also playing his final season for Washington in 2007. In between his two stints with the franchise, McCardell played for five other teams, most notably a six-year stretch with Jacksonville from 1996-2001.

Following his rookie campaign, McCardell landed in Cleveland, where he would play the next four seasons (1992-95). In his final year there in 1995, McCardell emerged to record 56 catches for 709 yards and four touchdowns. The following offseason he became a free agent and signed with Jacksonville.

During his Jaguar career, McCardell caught 499 passes for 6,393 yards and 30 touchdowns, and earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 1996. He signed with Tampa Bay in 2002, where that season he helped the team win Super Bowl XXXVII. In 2003, McCardell was selected to the Pro Bowl for the second time after registering 84 receptions for 1,174 yards and eight touchdowns. From Tampa Bay, he moved on to San Diego where he spent three seasons (2004-06) before playing his final year in Washington.

McCardell, a Houston native, was born Jan. 6, 1970.

I thought it was already official.

Still, I like the hire. He's not far removed from the game so he still has the perspective of that position fresh in his mind. Always a team player, it's his dedication which improved his route running and in turn gave him the edge over more talented receivers through his career. Very consistent player, IMO, and I hope those best qualities of his wind up being reflected in the Redskins WRs he coaches.

I like it. Here's a player who had consistently adapted to the modern NFL, despite having less than stellar speed. What he lacked in pure physical skill, he made up for in knowledge of the game, route running, and sure hands. His focus must have been unbelievable.

He's going to make a fine tutor for our youngsters. Imagine if DT, MK, and MM can take just a little bit from this guy.

So does this mean everyone here expects the WR's on this roster to take another step back?

They couldn't. We literally have had nothing good come out of having Stan Hixon as our WR coach for 6 years. We have one pro bowler to show, and none of the receivers we have drafted have developed quickly in ways we've seen other young receivers do so around the league.

McCardell has a plethora of experience to draw from that he can pass on to our youngsters. He can command respect from the team, and the guy just flat out knows what he's talking about. For a player who was a 12th round pick to have lasted as long as he did in the league, he must be a student of the game.

I think we're going to be pleasantly surprised. :D

I also noticed that both years he was here, we won the Super Bowl the first year, although he was on IR, and made the playoffs the 2nd time he came around in 07. Hopefully he brings that kind of luck back with him :D
