Military Drafts: What would you do?

Teller

Recommended Posts

Scenario: You're drafted into a war, to fight on behalf of your country. Maybe you agree with the war, maybe you don't.

Question: What do you do? Do you go fight? Do you dodge? Do you try to find an escape? Do you leave your homeland to avoid the conflict?

What would you do?

I guess I should answer my own question before we go much further.

Personally, I would fight. Whether I agree with the war or not, I consider it such a privelege to live in the United States of America that I see it as my duty to defend her, regardless of my personal feelings.

Since this is purely hypothetical, I'd say the only way I wouldn't go (other than the fact that I'm too old to be drafted) would be if there was some serious moral and ethical problems that were well known practices in whatever theoretical war we're talking about. For example soldiers being ordered to slaughter civilians, etc.

If things are that bad, I might do what my grandfather did: join up beforehand so I could have some say in what I do. He joined the navy before the US jumped into WWII because he figured we would get involved; this way, he got to be an officer, make some inroads. Of course, he still ended up volunteering for damn dangerous missions :insane: so other people wouldn't have to go. :applause:

But if it were something unforeseen and all of a sudden we were drafting people and my number came up, I would go. I meant it when I signed that selective service form, and I still do. Of course, I also suspect that I would get turned down for anything resembling front line duty--I have truly awful eyesight.

I bet I could fly those predator drones, though... :saber:

That's one of the interesting dilemmas (sp, sorry, a few too many miller lites at this point) that I hoped would come up.

We carpet-bombed the **** out of Germany in WWII, and killed plenty of civilians with the bombs on Japan. Even though many draftees didn't know that was coming beforehand, what would you have done in that situation? (Presuming you did know it was coming.)

Fight my ass off.

Any war that would require a draft in America would have to be a matter of survival for the union... so I'd fight my ass off for this country's security.

I don't like my chances of surviving jail.

Really? They don't have RPG's, IED's, and Kalashnikov's in prison.

Anyway, the question in the OP is pretty open ended. A lot of variables where the specifics could most definitely change my answer.

If I'm a 1930's German who loves the fatherland but Hitler drafts me, I'm not going. If we're talking about now, to fight al Qaeda or whatever, then that's different.

If we're talking about just now, this very moment, then yeah. I go. But I already served and I did that on my own. Not sure how I'd feel about being forced though.

I already served so with that said I would probably volunteer without having to be drafted.

What I do find it interesting is all of the "it depends" answers. Your country didn't say "it depends" when it granted you the benifit of being an American, the least you can do is serve if called. Like it was said earlies in the thread, if there was a draft to go to war, then your country would seriously need you because the **** has really hit the fan. Honestly, if you can't do that, please give up your citizenship.
