Wade “Cupcake” Phillips Gives Cowboys Christmas Off

On Friday, Cowboys receiver Roy Williams will be able to wake up, find coal in his stocking, then relax and enjoy Christmas with his family. Williams will have that leisure because Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips is giving Christmas Day off to his players.

“I think you lose a lot [by practicing] on Christmas Day,” Phillips said. “[They have] families, a lot of them have kiddoes and stuff. You take that away from them, you lose a lot more that way than you would having them be there.”

With this holiday break, fans can start calling Phillips “Fruitcake” instead of “Cupcake” as he continues his trend of taking it easy on players when he should press them and demand more.

The next two games hold a lot for the Cowboys. Two wins and the Cowboys are in the playoffs. Anything less and the future gets fuzzy, except for Phillips departing Dallas.

But it holds a lot more for the fans. No Cowboys fan wants to lose to the Redskins. Take it from me and TLH, who both live in Northern Virginia. We’d never hear the end of it up here.

That being said, this loss should never happen. The Redskins are coming off of a 45-12 beatdown at the hands of the Giants on Monday night. We topped the previously unbeaten Saints on Saturday night. Albert Haynesworth, their best player, is questioning his role in the Redskins defense. DeMarcus Ware, playing hurt, won the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Week honors and clinched the win with a sack/forced fumble.

We have a long week, theirs is short. We’re riding high on emotions, they’re in the pits. Our best player is happy, theirs is grumbling.

This is the kind of game that the Cowboys should win handily. We should run them into the damn ground.

Instead, the Cowboys have Friday off. If the team is flying on Saturday, that means that the team will head into Sunday’s game two days removed from their last practice.

It’s not right. The Cowboys should be practicing on Friday. I’m not saying that those members of the team who want to celebrate Christmas shouldn’t be able to, but there should be a nice, short, concise practice sometime on Friday. Ask the players when they want it. When they leave, tell them “Merry Christmas, Beat the “Skins.”

Even Michael Irvin agrees with me, as he said that the Cowboys need a Christmas practice.

Instead, Phillips is giving his team every opportunity to fail. We can only hope that the Cowboys can pull off a win despite their coach.

Once again Wade shows he just doesn't get it.

If Ny & GB wins out, & the pokes lose 1 game they will miss the playoffs again.

giving the pokes the day off gives an impression of over confidence, to the players and fans.

Beating the Saints doesn't change they already lost 2 games in Dec. and aren't a lock in the playoffs.

the monkey isn't off their back yet

I personally don't think it will be a big deal, the short walk through type practice they would usually have shouldn't make much of a difference at this point in the season. But.. After all the December let downs for the Cowboys and all the criticism Wades taken for being soft, he probably should of had something just so this wouldnt be an issue. The facts are on this subject were on a different set of standards as far as the medias concerned, if Belichick does this it's not even a story, but if Wade does it it possibly becomes a distraction. Not fair, just the way it is.

With that said every player should get christmas off as a rule imo.

Let's review

Pokes haven't won a playoff game in 12 years

Last time the Pokes made the playoffs, Wade gave players days off (see Cabo) before early exit

Before Dec, Romo sits to pee and Austin go on Vegas Charity trip, Pokes loses next 2 games

Fans, media speculate the reason for Dec swoons, because Wade too soft during training camp, and during season. Wade's always laxs in details, under prepared.

Pokes has not clinched play off spot (missed play offs last season because of Dec. Swoon & Philly rout).

Giving entire day off "appears" Poke are confident of playoff run.

"if" the Redskins pull off upset..... imagine the media fall out, and even the fans reaction.

Is it still an issue if they win?

What is your response to DWD's post where he said he made them practice tuesday instead of having the day off, in order to have friday off?

No practice time was lost, why would this be a problem ?

Doesn't Matter, they didn't add an extra practice, they played Saturday night, Tuesday was the next "workday"

Wade does nothing that leads anyone to believe he is determined not to have yet another let down.

Do you think, Parcells, Gibbs, Belichick, heck even Landry, knowing they need both wins to make the playoffs, give an "extra day off" for any reason because that had 1 win in 3 weeks? If nothing else just a dot the i's cross the t's practice, to imprint in the team the importance of winning and making the playoffs.

Listen to Wade talking about winning in December, as if the the jinx is over type talk.

I see. So you think having an extra practice would make the difference between winning and losing.

What if dallas beats the skins this week? Would you admit that one "extra" practice in week 16 of the NFL season really doesn't amount to much in the big scheme of things?

I look at it a different way....call if camp cupcake if you wish but look at the small number if injuries that dallas has every year compared to other teams....Take the skins for example......tons of injuries every year and this year is no exception......Maybe those easy training days and extra days off during the week mean something after all

 you are really going out of your way to AVOID the point I'm making

the "perception" is Wade's too soft (See "Cupcake" in poke fan site title), "If" the pokes lose Sunday, the heat generated in the media and fans because they took it easy before the game will be unreal.

1 Practice week 16 important? Hell yeah..... the Skin missed practice time because of the Snow, and look how unprepared they played Monday.

If Wade was smart, not only would he practiced, but afterwards had a team unity type dinner/get together. How many single players are on the team? how many are too far from family too visit Friday?

So they leave practice today, on their own, and don't report until Saturday to fly to DC, to play Sunday. That's 3 days they don't prepare or practice, with a day many party, and overeat in between, and since the don't have anyone checking on them, as they would have if they practiced, how many players will over indulge, or lose focus?

With Wade's history, why risk fate?

win/lose/tie

LOL. Yeah, thats why the skins played the way they did. Because they missed practice. LOL !!! Stretch the truth much?

How are they different from any other team in the league? All teams have players away from family. Yet the difference is, the money these guys have, fly thier families in to see them, OR they jump on a plane to see family for a day and fly back.

Give me a coach that will give me the opportunity to see my family at Xmas every year. You're really reaching here.

Perhaps you'd have a point if they were playing the Colts, or Philly. But they're not. They're playing a team that has already given up on the season. You know it, and I know it.

My little league team was 5-0. We were scheduled to play a team on the last day of the season who was 2-3. We were going to finish in first place regardless of the outcome of the last game. Besides, we were just better. So our coach took it real easy on us that last week. I mean, how could we lose to a 2-3 team? We were undefeated! So we had an easy week and went into the last game full of confidence.

We lost.
