WPC: Is Portis retiring?

I love Portis and I appreciate every ounce of effort he put in here. That said tho I think it is time to move on, we need to find a few good, young RBs. I think it is time to say goodbye to Portis and Betts IMO.

Portis is on of my all time favorite skins, but sadly, he doesn't have it anymore and it sounds as if his heart may not be in it either. Which I completely understand after a hard career and tons of losing...I wish him the best no matter what road he takes.

If so, Thanks for your service. We really wore him out during those two playoff runs. The shelf life of an NFL running back is way too short.

That's why so few teams give one back 350 carries a year like that anymore. With as big and fast as they are now no one can take that load anymore, they get used up too quickly.

With the majority of his salary guaranteed next year, I believe retirement is the only way he can lose that 6.5 million dollars.

In other words, no way. Maybe if we cut him first he would think about it, but no freakin' way he retires and costs himself that kind of cash.

ding ding ding! We have a winner!

Unless Vinny offers him a "marketing and promotion" package to be "a redskin for life" which moves his guaranteed portions of the contract to a different (but still guaranteed) revenue stream.

Does this sound like a guy who is hungry to get back to the field and help his team win?

I hope he retires and spares us the cap implications. If not, he should probably be cut anyway, if theres no cap.

Get someone in there who is young and hungry and wants to run hard, like we've seen out of Betts, Rock, and Ganther the past month.

I appreciate that the guy played hard, but for the last year plus, he has not had his head or heart into the Redskins, on or off the field.

The Redskins have won 3 games since 2004 without CP.

He had the second most rushing yards in a season last year, second only to his own best. He has 4 of the top 10 rushing seasons in Redskins history.

He is without a doubt the best blocking back pound for pound to ever wear a Skins uniform.

He has been the one bright spot consistently on offense. If people want to claim that his production has not been adequate, then they should apply those same stringent standards to every other player on offense. It his hilarious that poster's who defend JC in one sentence, blast CP in the next.

The guy was a warrior for this team.

Isn't that basically what Green Bay had with Favre when he "retired"?

we are better off without him IMO....

I love the guys attitude and heart.... and actually would be sad to see him gone... but I think the running game has looked a lot better with Betts and Rock.... imagine what it could look like like with a young stud RB

Is Portis retiring?

Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis sounded like a man who was through with football.

Minutes before Portis’ weekly show, the Redskins released a statement that the runner would miss the rest of the season with a concussion. He had already missed four games, and a Pittsburgh specialist wouldn’t clear him.

Portis believes he’ll get well, but two parts are obvious – no one knows if Portis will play again and no one knows if he does where that will be. The answer may not come until March at the earliest.

Portis is an old 28. His 2,176 carries are clearly wearing him down. Portis averaged 4.0 yards this season, but lacked a breakaway burst.
