ZOONY'S TAKE

“Bottom line, we didn't finish.”

-Laron Landry, postgame

So do you call it heartbreaking at this point, or expected? For so many of those who have watched the 2009 Redskins 5 games into the season, expected would be the word. The Redskins put together another 4 quarters of uninspired, predictable football for the 5th time in as many attempts this season. And so far, they’ve had the good fortune to play 2 teams less interested in doing what it takes to win than they are.

But not today. After jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead and building it into a 17-2 margin by the 3rd quarter, the Redskins fell back into their comfort zone; which is to say, bad football. It started with a big kick return to set up an effortless TD from Delhome to King, a play Panthers' running back Jonathan Stewart called "the play that ignited us". The Panthers found their momentum, and it was up to the Redskins to take it back. Predictably, they couldn't. The salt in the wound happened on a big 3rd down, where the slowest QB in the league burned our $50 million cornerback on a naked boot to seal the game.

I overheard several players in the locker room saying that there is still time to “get it fixed”. That they just need to "take care of the little things." Step up, make a play, or a stop, or a catch, or a tackle. You can’t help but wonder, do they really believe it, or is that just something to say to get the media off their back? Malcolm Kelly addressed this with me directly… “I know we say that week in and week out, but it’s the truth”. Fair enough, however, there is a larger point of view to consider.

The 2009 Washington Redskins are not a good football team. They are not an underperforming or even undisciplined, nor are they necessarily poorly coached. We are not plagued with the constant false starts from the Spurrier era. We don’t have guys playing poorly to spite their coach, like we saw under Schottenheimer. The media has been examining the locker room with a microscope, looking for signs of a fractures, drama, disagreements, or some sort of explanation as to why performance has been the way it has. So far, outside of Portis and Sellars getting into an argument, an incident that is only a big deal to people who have never played competitive sports, they have found nothing. Know why? Because there is nothing to find. Guys not playing their hardest or splits within the locker room is not the reason this team is losing.

Let me repeat, the Redskins are just not a good football team. At some point, you are what your record and stat sheets say you are. We are a 2-3 squad that has lost to 2 winless teams, and beaten 2 winless teams at home by a combined total of 5 points. We cannot move the ball on offense consistently, nor can it perform in the clutch on 4th down. This is true of the larger team as a whole. Good NFL Defenses do not get beat on the final play by a slow, lumbering QB making a first down on a naked bootleg. Our offensive line is not only ineffective, but old. Our rookie LB has been a liability in coverage. Our secondary allows other teams to make plays, despite dropping 7 guys into coverage consistently.

74 Yards Rushing, 145 Yards Passing against the League’s 23rd ranked defense. This comes just one week after similarly uninspired numbers against the 2nd worst defense in the league in Tampa.

So where does the team go from here? Ladell Betts told me that it was time to watch the tape, and see what needs to be fixed. I disagree. There is no fixing this. This Team is now playing the 2009 Season for a draft pick. Let’s hope it’s a good one.

Some postgame audio notes:

  • Devin Thomas takes me through the play where he dropped the bomb from Campbell. He was very down on himself. He looked at the floor the entire time. You can tell how badly he wanted that play.

  • Ladell Betts talked to me a bit about Sherm Lewis. From his perspective, coach Lewis was invisible this week. Betts speculates that he is just trying to get a feel for what is going on.

  • Mike Williams, probably the only positive from today's game, talks to me about his journey from 12 months to where he is now, and what this start meant to him. Some good audio there... if you only have time to listen to one audio clip from today's coverage, I recommend you choose that one. :) Mike Williams is an extremely likable fellow, and gracious in answering my questions.

  • Malcolm Kelly talks to me a bit about what ails this offense, and how his knee is doing. Another extremely likable guy. 30 seconds with Malcolm and you find yourself really rooting for him to be successful. Also, according to Malcolm, his knee is "110%". Nice to hear... but Murf and his negative self points out that it is a lie, as percentages can never be over 100. Well la-dee-dah.

  • Laron Landry talks about the defense overall today. His words... "we just didn't finish". He seemed as frustrated as most.

Haha. I just now got to see this, hours after our phone conversation. I even had to check the time stamp to see if you might have posted it after I said it. :D
