SnyderShrugged
I still have to see evidence behind the committees decision making process, between now and then. Here is the thing: the uproar from many people is not based upon this. If anything, it is the factor that Obama won. Period. Similar to the applause on the Right when Obama tried to secure the Olympics for Chicago and failed. If he actually did bring the troops home from foreign soil and really caused peace rather than speak about his dream of it, then I'd cheer him winning the award. The Brave Little Toaster Oven
well he had really, really great intentions. That seems to be enough to edge out actual results in the award process these days.yay for intentions! Since pretty words were all that were needed to win the Nobel Peace Prize, I should have about 12 eleventy billion awards by now. ....its time to bring back my Sanjaya Obama signature! cjcdaman
Congrats to the President.I don't think it is a reach -- he has reached out across the globe for better cooperation, nuclear disarmament, etc. Who else would be a better candidate for this year? I am sure there are a few names, but I cannot think of any from the top of my head. :rotflmao:

Sure, I can agree with this sentiment. This pretty much sums up the thoughts of some folks, that maybe it was a couple of years too early. That, I think, is a valid point. But, again, as I said before, in the context of previous winners, Obama's award does not stick out like a sore thumb (in the context of what he has done since being sworn into office). nonniey
okay, insult Al Gore and Arafat and that's fine, but Jimmy Carter didn't win it for what he did as President. He got it because of all the humanitarian work he does since then. No, he won it for going to North Korea and getting them to end their nuclear weapons program. Of course in reality they never stopped the program. But for the Nobel Peace prize committee reality is never a consideration.

Braxford
They were going to give this to him regardless. The Obama love fest will continue well into 2010. I used to read up on the winners of the award because I have always thought it brings good attention to possibly the best cause on earth, peace. Roosevelt, Wilson, and Carter all helped accomplish treaties or concrete steps for peace. Obama has done NOTHING, just talked. The guy has set himself up though and his fall from his world love fest will be spectacular, one for the ages.

nonniey
If winning the prize wasn't noteworthy, then this wouldn't be a topic of discussion, nor would any of us even discuss this news event. Did I say it wasn't note worthy? I said it wasn't anything to brag about.

AsburySkinsFan
huh ? The only people getting all up in arms are the ones who don't like anyone questioning why Obama got this. I'm not a right winger, but nice to lump anyone who questions Obama into one category. Hell, even several self proclaimed liberals on this board are baffeled at this award. What do you say about them? Nice when someone has a legitimate question the response is "You're just a hate filled Right wing conservative." Sorry, mate but I think you're reading needs work, because I said "you may have" and then I talk about the Right-wing. I purposefully excluded you from the second part of my statement. All I can say about this award is what the committee themselves said about why they gave it to him. It seems that many are questioning this award based on their own notions about why the award should be given which are apparently not the same notions that the committee themselves use to determine the Peace Prize winner. I think it really come down to whether this prestigous award should go to Deeds or intentions of future deeds. Personally, I think it would have a lot more credibility and long term social impact if it was exclusive to the domain of deeds. But as Bac and some others have pointed out (fairly, I may add) It has often gone for intentions.

Wow, I hope you don't enjoy it too much considering you're talking about the President of the United States and if he fails as bad as you seem to hope he's going to then that will mean negatives for the United States. Well done sir on showing your true allegiance, party over country.

It tells me that things are so SO bad internationally, that the smallest, most inoquous thing like -- treating your peers with respect -- garners a Nobel prize. I think that if there is any blame to laid here, it is squarely at the feet of the previous administration. It is because of their actions, that this guy got an award for being nice. Don't hate the player, hate the game.
Predicto
Good for Obama, but even his most ardent supporters have to be a bit mystified by this one. We are. This is way way way too early.

Baculus, you are the definition of an "Internet tough guy" You sling insults and call people that disagree with you stupid. Yet you are SOOO on the President's JOCK that you have blinders on. I voted for the man, with an understanding that there was NO way that he was going to fulfill all of the "Land of Milk and honey" campaign promises. Unfortunately, I was right and then some. It just blows my mind that he would be given a previously prestigious award for doing absolutely nothing to deserve it, other than some well written speeches.
