Looking back at when the trade happened I thought the trade was pretty even, but now I just don't know. Portis has been our workhorse back for years and has been very good for us but in the NFL runningbacks are a dime a dozen. There are only a handfull of shutdown corners in this league and Champ is still one of them. He practically holds down half the field and quarterbacks don't even throw his way. What do you guys think?

No.

Just like many fans, the Skins organization seems more concerned about individual success than team success. You'll see what I mean when people talk about how Portis is on pace to be the leading rusher for the Redskins, has the single season rushing record, blah blah blah, as justification as to why it was a great trade.

I hated the trade from a personnel standpoint... growing up with darrell green, I learned how truly rare a shutdown corner is and how replacable RBs are, but weren't there other circumstances involving bailey that made him wanting out of this area convincing? don't know if it was personal or contractual but I thought I remember him wanting out...

*sigh*

Not this again.

Look, Champ is a great corner. Will be considered one of the greatest cornerbacks ever. But guess what? Shut down corners themselves don't win games. Ask the dude over in Oakland. As for the 2nd rounder? Yes, it was a gross overpayment, but it wound up being a guy who tried to be Portis' replacement and it did not pan out, obviously. Since then, the Broncos and Redskins have won the same amount of playoff games: 1.

In the end, Broncos got their shut down corner, and Joe Gibbs got his workhorse back. Both are good players. The end. It's over. Stop talking about it.

Bailey wouldn't have played for us, and has had a bit of the same injury bug we've seen Portis suffer from. In the long run, sometimes you have to make trades you don't exactly like. Lucky for us, we actually got a relatively fair deal, despite losing a very early draft pick (We probably would've used the pick exactly the way they did, and Tatum Bell has been an underwhelming back, so it doesn't really amount to anything).

Gibbs is a genuis ...Denver has replaced 9 different starting RB's...and have drafted even more Backup Rb....That is a lot of wasted Years, and time spent to replace one Guy(CP)...Champ was replaced day one by Springs..Then we drafted a super star Saftey(Sean M. Taylor) that prevented all deep passing plays.....Denver has never improved..Our Offense and Defense got Better with Champ Leaving it's a Fact...

I never understood why the Skins had to give up a second rounder in that trade. Shutdown CBs are rare. Running backs, not so much. Of course, they were getting a guy that averaged 5.5 ypc his first two years. But still, there was no way you give up Champ Bailey AND a second. They got hornswaggled.

That being said, I used to love Champ, but haven't really missed him since the trade. Champ is anti-clutch. He plays at a HOF level for most of the game, but when it turns into crunch time, he turns into Chump Bailey and gets beat.

 For the 1,000,000th time:

Champ wanted out. We would have lost him anyway. We got Clinton Freaking Portis out of it. Losing Bailey was not why we haven't won the Super Bowl. Having Portis is not why we haven't won the Super Bowl. Nothing to see here.

With the upheaval with management bringing in all those free agents and new coaching staffs, Bailey simply wanted to ditch, and he would have left the year after. He would not have re-signed with the Skins. So, in that vain, getting Portis for him was like trading a 2nd round pick for Portis.

Was it worth it? Considering the track record of the Skins draft picks, I think so. I still remember Portis's first run, a 64-yard TD. I was so happy about the trade then. Portis has given us a lot in terms of entertainment and some distress but he's always given his all on the field.

Whether the trade should have ever happened, that's another question. If Snyder hadn't been so hell-bent on changing so much, Bailey might have felt better about the situation and stayed. We probably could have drafted a runner or an offensive lineman or two (trading back) with that 2nd. We would have saved the 1st rounder for Carlos Hands-of-Stone Rogers as well.

It's one of the reasons why I'm so pissed at management and not so much the players. Mismanagement in today's NFL with the salary cap plays a large role in whether a team wins or loses. the FO might not be making exactly the same mistakes, but its still dysfunctional enough to make the Redskins forever mediocre.

I agree with your post

Why did you have to bring up the Giants and Cowboy games?:(sad

Champs gets burned for a 60 yard bomb:doh:..we lose again

Talk about beating a dead horse

Both teams seemingly got what they wanted out of the trade. The Redskins signed Shawn Springs, who cost quite less then Champ, and had an anchor for years in the secondary.

The Broncos used that pick for Tatum Bell, traded him to the Lions, and well who knows what happened to that pick

When you look back at it, both sides can be considered "winners" in the deal

I think we won the deal. As you said, Tatum Bell? The Broncs never replaced Portis and we easily replaced Champ. Also- I still don't see Champ's Lombardi Trophy anywhere.

I ask again- Please close this tired thread so the OP can move on with his life after Champ.

Like others have said Champ wanted out and I wish we could've gotten a 1st and 3rd. It would have been an honor to watch Clinton Portis finish his career with the Broncos. Dude would have shattered records. Then Joe Gibbs came long and decided we had the Hogs again and Riggins on our team. More or less, turned him into something he was not. CP is doing a great job at being a powerback......but he would have been something special staying with his abilities like he had in Denver.

Clinton has had more of an impact than Baily ever had.

I was a big supported of Champ, but in terms of worth to the team, it isn't even close.

The 2nd rounder was what really swayed the deal in the Bronco's favor, but in terms of the players themselves, no question Clinton for Champ was a good deal for the Skins.

What did Denver win? the Defense got worst...They never had a 1500 yard Rb ever since? Tatum Bell was too soft for the NFl...then the next year they drafted Maurice Clarett...who made a career of being a stickup kid..smmfh

We Replaced Trung Canidate..With a consistant 1500 yard back...ARE YOU ****ING ****TING ME!!

The defense became much better without Champ getting toasted every single season lets be real....Springs played lights out...Rogers was a sure tackler...and lets not forget about the whole entire backfeild..a.k.a Sean Taylor...When in the last years have you watch the defense and said to yourself we need Champ...LMAO..LMFAO.never..no fan has...now think about all of the times we said we needed SEAN TAYLOR

that's the difference right there...Champ is a good DB in the NFL no Doubt, and in no way is he a sorry player...but IMHO He is not a Game Changer at all

Like i said already Joe Jackson Gibbs is a genuis for this trade
