Gotta give the President his due here. They love him globally

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091005/lf_nm_life/us_usa_status

(Reuters Life!) – The United States is the most admired country globally thanks largely to the star power of President Barack Obama and his administration, according to a new poll.

It climbed from seventh place last year, ahead of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan which completed the top five nations in the Nation Brand Index (NBI).

"What's really remarkable is that in all my years studying national reputation, I have never seen any country experience such a dramatic change in its standing as we see for the United States for 2009," said Simon Anholt, the founder of NBI, which measured the global image of 50 countries each year.

He believes that during the previous administration of George W. Bush the United States suffered in the world ranking with its unpopular foreign policies but since Obama was elected, and despite the recent economic turmoil, the country's status has risen globally.

"There is no other explanation," Anholt said in an interview, referring to the impact of Obama.

I was hoping that they would detail the specifics on what traits drove the admiration. I think this is great news, but we should understand the why's and strengthen whats working while purging whats not.

I'm thinking Freedom Fries was one of the bad things.

I suppose more apology tours will be scheduled.....it's not right for the U.S. to be this successful and admired.....

Yeah we should instead flick them off, provide bad evidence to the world via the UN, attack anyone that doesn't support a war based on bad evidence, mock people from any country other than our own, and constantly remind everyone that we are the greatest in the damn world and we will do as we please....

then wonder why we aren't well liked.

freedom fry?

They did. Read it. It is Obama.

I did read it, they didnt specify, but did make a guess.

sorry, but President Obama's mere existence in the role of president can hardly be credited for overall global opinion.

That said, I'm pretty sure that his election as someone who isnt Bush did help in the rating, but only as one of many factors.

Nice partisan spin though. Doesnt it get tiring to be such a hack?

Maybe those things that AAARedskin calls "apology tours" actually had a positive effect on world opinion toward us? You know, the speeches where Obama treated the rest of the world with little bit of respect? :whoknows:

Personally, I think some of what the President has done in an effort to improve relations is very admirable and worthy of support.

However, some of his other actions, like trade wars with china, and continuing the Bush war cycle have the oppposite effect.

Again, I'd be a liar to say that the president cant have had any positive influence on the ratings, but I'm equally sure that there must be other factors that were involved.

Actually I'd have to disagree with you here. I think this change in poll numbers is due primarily to Obama's star power. There are a lot of people who are absolutely enamored with him....so it's not like there have to be other factors involved here. His mere celebrity status would be enough to account for the bulk of this change in opinion.

Much better to be well liked and wrong than to be maligned and correct.

To bad this O.B.A.M.A. was not president in the late 1930's and early 1940's. We could have stayed out of WWII altogether. I am sure that Germany, Italy and Japan would have appreciated it.

"O.B.A.M.A.?" Please explain.

I care, not for the literal feelings and perception side of things, but as those feelings relate to trade, security and overall economics.
Well, it is my opinion that those things are not drastically impacted by population survey results. Citizens of other countries may not be happy with us, but their government is likely going to work with us.

I'm not saying we should go out and purposefully piss in everyone's cheerios because we don't give a rip at all, but swings in international opinion like this don't really phase me that much.

I think his "near celebrity" status is way overblown. The IOC decision is one example.

It's more that he isnt Bush (IMHO)

Fair point. And I wouldn't argue with that because I think the "he's not Bush" factor is, in fact, a big factor.

But I still do think he is a celebrity-like entity overseas; maybe not so much with the ruling bodies, but amongst the general population.
