Unemployed Punters: Who's Available?

whomever we sign, we have to keep Hunter Smith on the roster. He has been the best punter in the B&G for some while (sad I can say that after only playing three games).

If possible under the rules I would IR Montgomery and then sign a punter until Smith gets better.

With Smith Injured, Redskins to Work Out Punters

Hunter Smith may not be available to punt in this Sunday’s game at Carolina due to a groin injury.

As a result, the Redskins are expected to work out several punters on Tuesday.

“It’s not a severe injury but it is going to possibly keep him from participating,” Jim Zorn said. “We just have to [evaluate] him as we go through the week.”

Smith suffered the injury on his first punt of Sunday’s Buccaneers game at FedExField. Early in the first quarter, he got off a 47-yard punt.

Even though Chris Cooley is listed as Smith’s backup on the depth chart, Zorn turned to Suisham in punting situations the rest of the game.

Suisham had three punts for a 26.7-yard average.

The Redskins have had a revolving door of punters in recent seasons, from Derrick Frost to Durant Brooks to Ryan Plackemeier. Frost plays for the UFL, while Brooks and Plackemeier are free agents.

The Redskins hoped to have closed that revolving door with the signing of Smith last offseason.

“If we did sign a punter, then I would just rest Hunter,” Zorn said. “I would not punt him [against Carolina]."

Zorn added: “It’s definitely a possibility that we’ll bring in a guy for a week so [smith] can get his leg strength back. We don’t want this to be reoccurring through the entire season.”

Smith also serves as the holder on field goal attempts.

Zorn said he may keep Smith in that role for the Carolina game.

“I’d love to have him out there because I want that [combination of long snapper Ethan Albright, Smith and Suisham] to stay the same,” Zorn said.

Smith has been relatively injury free in his career. He has played in 16 games every season since entering the league with the Indianapolis Colts in 1999.
