goflyhelo
I'm I the only who thinks Blache should not be forecasting this much? By Gary Fitzgerald Redskins.com Posted: October 1, 2009 http://www.redskins.com/gen/articles/News___Notes__Blache_Plans_a_More_Aggressive_Scheme_64980.jsp News & Notes: Blache Planning More Aggressive Calls Greg Blache indicated on Thursday that he planned to be more aggressive with his defensive play calls in the weeks ahead. Blache, who accepted responsibility for the defensive struggles in last Sunday’s 19-14 loss to the Detroit Lions, suggested he needed to be more of a “maverick" with his play calls. “Not necessarily a McCain-Palin maverick,” he said, “but a Brett or Bart kind of maverick, a little bit more of a riverboat gambler.” The Redskins have just four sacks in three games this season after struggling in that department last year. It was thought the presence of Albert Haynesworth would improve sack results, but for the most part quarterbacks have been able to elude defensive linemen. Blache, unlike his predecessor Gregg Williams, has not been a coordinator who deploys a lot of safety and cornerback blitzes. Despite the low number of sacks, Blache’s strategy worked well enough in 2008. The Redskins were ranked 7th in the NFL in pass defense last year. This year, through three games, the unit is ranked 10th in the NFL. Last Sunday in Detroit, the Redskins struggled on third-down conversions, allowing 9-of-12 in the first half and 10-of-18 for the game. Overall this season, opponents have converted 22-of-43 third downs against the Redskins, a 51.2 percentage. To improve on those numbers, Blache said he needed to put players in position to succeed with better defensive play calls. “If the calls aren’t real good, that’s my fault,” he said. “If the players don’t play with detail, that’s my fault because that all comes back to coaching. If we didn’t have talent, you’d say, ‘Well, there’s a talent issue.’ “We have talent. In our league, the most talented teams don’t always win. The teams that play the best win. And like last Sunday, I thought we were a better football team, but we didn’t play better. “When you stop, look in the mirror and you go through all the details, that comes back to coaching. Quite candidly, I have no problem accepting that.” Asked about the third down struggles against Detroit, Blache said: “If you go back through the tape, and you go back through the film, and you look at what is happening on third down, you go, ‘Where is the problem?’ There is a problem, no ifs, ands or buts, there is a problem. “You go back and you look at it. ‘Okay, this is a group of guys who works hard. They come to practice everyday. They do compete.’ So how to you help them? You help them by giving them better calls and putting them in better situations.” HTTR! :point2sky

I just hope he brings it big time! I want to see smashmouth football on all three phases of the game for us (offense, defense, special teams). GhostofSparta
I hope to God he's more agressive. He let a freaking rookie beat him by not pressuring him enough to make mistakes. Press coverage, zone blitzes, formation shifts, whatever it takes.
WorldBFree76
Maybe that's why Reed has been put into the starting lineup? From what I've seen he's a very solid blitzer from the safety position.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Show me. I think he has said stuff like this before, but it never seems to actually happen on game day.

boofMcboof
Riverboat gambler? It shouldn't be about gambling at all, more like forcing the issue. I don't think he gets it.
No Excuses
His blitz designs suck anyways. Everyone and their mother knows five seconds before the snap who is blitzing and who isn't.

Soup
His blitz designs suck anyways. Everyone and their mother knows five seconds before the snap who is blitzing and who isn't. I think blache said he only has a handful of blitz plays. He's from the Bears and they run the same defense the redskins run. I think blache realizes his Two starting corners are not the greatest so he has to change it up a bit.

I think blache realizes his Two starting corners are not the greatest so he has to change it up a bit. This happened with Williams. We switched to cover two under him. Then, we had much better secondary then we do now. It's time to get back to an aggressive style to intimidate the offense, not simply not let it break you. Fact is, our offense is struggling. That is when the defense should become more offensive. In turn, with less field to travel, the offense should score more, building it's confidence. mistertim
I hope this includes "aggressively putting Orakpo's hand in the damn dirt".
Snagletooth
Would love to see it. I finally got the stomach to go back and look at some tape from Detroit. We were playing a lot of read and react. Passive, in the run and passing game.
Xero21
I hope more aggressive means more creative. Whenever we blitz, EVERY SINGLE blitzer gets picked up by the opponent's OL. And a little press coverage wouldn't hurt.
TankRizzo
I like Blache but I've never been a fan of his style of defense. You've got to get to the passer.

Zazzaro703
It's about time. Talk is cheap though I'll wait to see some results. Wasn't this current style of defense basically built around the talents of ST21??? Only makes sense to change it up.
LaxBuddy21
I do at least like to see one of our coaches taking responsibility for his failures. I hope he does step up with some disguised coverage and blitzes. I am tired of "here is what we are doing now try to beat it". Doesnt work in the NFL. Taylor4Life
Hopefully the offense follows suit. I'm prepared for some higher point swings if this actually does occur, but at least the games will be fun to watch.

I think Blache looked at the tape and realized he's giving up big plays anyways, why not be more aggressive. He's probably going to bring landry up more and use Orakpo and Reed more with the blitz. he probably expected the players on defense to be soooo good that they could just play a base defense and still be effective. He said that he likes his players to think less and react more. Playing a base defense like they have allowed the players to just react but It might have been an awakening against the lions that the players on defense are not the what everyone expected.
