THUNDERDOME
So I'm rewatching the game, and its the opening drive of the 3rd quarter. Were in giants territory and a score would be big coming out of the half. At 10:56 left we run a handoff to Portis in which he gains 8 yards to set up 3rd and short. What gets me pissed is, I see Santana engage in a block, Randle El engage in a block, but for some reason, Kelly just WATCHES his man make the tackle. If he makes that block, Portis picks up at least another 5-15 yards, which would've kept the drive going and got us to at least their 35 yard line. (Campbell got pressured and we failed to convert third down the next play) I don't know what MK was thinking on that play, but it got me annoyed when I saw it again. It killed the momentum of the drive because if we score there, were right back in it Can anyone get a clip of that play? It might not be thread worthy, but there's not a lot of discussion going on outside of Zorn and Campbell Anyone who sees it, let me know if I'm overreacting to it or not. MumboSauce
I heard Doc mention things to that effect. MK or receivers not blocking or not liking to...not being physical. Not lining up correctly, running wrong routes.
TheLongshot
Such is the growing pains of a young player. Kelly, for all his promise, is still basically a rookie at this point.
terpfan
Don't remember that play, but for what its worth I remember thinking Malcolm did a nice job blocking on Portis' long run...
pvkeeper19
Yeah, that's almost as irritating as people who continually misspell "Malcolm." :2cents:

TSO
Saw the play after re-watching and felt exactly the same way. In fact, I was livid... Portis definitely let Kelly know as they walked back to the huddle though... he knew he messed up. We were just sloppy, but after watching the game again we're actually an improved team. I know that sentiment is not allowed right now, but it's still true.
kreitmaster
Yep, I remember this play distinctly. Looked like Kelly assumed the play was stopped before getting to him, so he didn't block and his man made the tackle. Unacceptable

rubynj
Maybe Kelly knows how predictable our play calling is and knows we couldnt win. He could think ok I made my one catch today, what are the chances the ball will even come to me? How about jason even looking my way? How about a multiple reciever set? I dont like the lack of effort as much as anyone. I just happen to hate the fact that fred davis, devin thomas and Kelly combined for 1 catch. Is Thrash comming out of retirement soon? Your telling me with that banged up secondary...we couldnt find a way to get the ball in these players hands?

Runs with Scissors
It looked like Kelly was thinking the play was staying to his right, and wasn't going to block the DB unless he moved further right. We would have been in FG range at least if he makes a block there.
G1
That play irritated me. Also, in the 2nd half Campbell was sacked when he was looking to Kelly on a fade route at the right of the end zone. The replay showed Kelly and he half heatedly jogged a few steps straight out of bounds, basically throwing Campbell under the bus. That, and the non block, should cost Kelly the start next week. I'd like to see Mitchell but regardless Kelly needs to know he can't take plays off like that.
SkinsFTW
I just rewatched that one too. He jogs about 10 yards, very slowly and just stand there in front of his guy. Yeah, WTF? The DB actually didn't react either but it had to be obvious from the start that it wasn't a pass play. Maybe this is why Kelly isn't getting any action. He doesn't look like he knows whats going on. Then when he might possibly have something coming his way I bet he plays all out, making it easy to defend him too.
SkinsFTW
Yeah, on the next play he actually runs downfield and is covered. Campbell doesn't even look to his side either.

I set out to say to you were wrong and ended up agreeing with you. He clearly kept just standing in front of #25 telling him to fall down. Portis had run 7 yds and made a cut and he still hadn't put his hands out to block. He stood there long enough to get pushed out of the play by #21 and then his man made the tackle. Dan T.
Will screen shots help. Ugh. What was he thinking? I hope he gets ripped in film review. He's got to learn - quickly - that crap isn't acceptable. As others have pointed out in this thread, I recall that he engaged in some effective hand-to-hand combat on Portis' long run. So he's capable - he just needs to do it. Every time.

What about Marko Mitchell? He's younger and shown an abilitity to block yet can't get on the field to show this.

I do hope that he learns to block every time, can't take a play off like that when it's all on film

Rookies with talent make plays. they also make mistakes. MK just makes mistakes, or even better, doesn't do anything at all.
