Congressman Suggests People Will Don 'White Hoods' If Wilson Not Rebuked

Actually, the Democrats didn't "strip out the language." The Republicans wanted to add in language to section 221 (and section 242) of the bill which would require legal residency verification. What is section 221 in H.R. 3200?

"221. Establishment and administration of a public health insurance option

as an Exchange-qualified health benefits plan."

That means for ANYONE trying to purchase ANY health care through the exchange -- not government public option health care, but private health care -- would be required to go through a indentification process.

We currently do NOT have this for the current private system, and this health care bill's objective is NOT to become a backdoor, background ID bill for the private health care system.

THIS is what folks such as yourself do not realize -- the Republicans were trying to add a identification process which would affect the PRIVATE industry. All this noise about "keeping government out of health care," and yet the GOP wants to mandate a verification process for the free market?

Is that what we want?

Now, we can debate about section 242, but I see no point in adding language which would affect the health care exchange. It is better that illegals buy health care insurance instead of using local resources.

Bac,

You sure about the claim you just made?

You've only quoted the heading from the section, but I've highlighted a few words in that heading that make me wonder if it really means what you say it means.

Here's the biggest problem for the GOP.

The country's demographics.

How is the party going to attract minority voters when all you see on TV is old white people screaming about Obama?

It's good for right-wing radio and Fox... but I'm not sure if it's good for the party.

I'd have to agree with you on this one. Dems should really let this go.

Obama accepted the apology so that should be that.

But Obama accepting an apology is not enough. The white liberals are basically more "black" than the President. LOL... Seriously! It's ****ing hilarious! They will claim racism and then when a black person on their side says it's absurd, then they back off. It really is funny.

"Oh, sorry Mr. Black Person...that didn't offend you? I thought it would so I jumped right on it!"

"Holy right-leaning racism Blackman! Did you hear that?"

"Yeah(shrugs shoulders). So?"

"I'm on the next case, Sir!"

:rotflmao:

If I offended anyone, please let me know. That was not my intent. It's very simple. There are white liberals who are more (rephrased) hateful against right-leaning white people than black people are. And I can't help but laugh.

And now Jimmy Carter has weighed in on the issue, claiming it's racist as well lol ...

"I think it's based on racism," Carter said at a town hall held at his presidential center in Atlanta. "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president."

The Georgia Democrat said the outburst was a part of a disturbing trend directed at the president that has included demonstrators equating Obama to Nazi leaders.

So when everyone was calling Bush "Hitler", that was actually a racist act? lol...Carter seems to think the only reason anyone would do that is because they're against having a black man as president.

Thankfully there are still those who can think clearly, from both sides:

"There is not a racist bone in my dad's body," said Alan Wilson, an Iraq veteran who is running for state attorney general. "He doesn't even laugh at distasteful jokes. I won't comment on former President Carter, because I don't know President Carter. But I know my dad, and it's just not in him."

"It's unfortunate people make that jump. People can disagree — and appropriately disagree — on issues of substance, but when they make the jump to race it's absolutely ludicrous. My brothers and I were raised by our parents to respect everyone regardless of background or race."

South Carolina's former Democratic Party chairman said that he doesn't believe Wilson was motivated by racism, but said the outburst encouraged racist views.

"I think Joe's conduct was asinine, but I think it would be asinine no matter what the color of the president," said Dick Harpootlian, who has known Wilson for decades. "I don't think Joe's outburst was caused by President Obama being African-American. I think it was caused by no filter being between his brain and his mouth."

Harpootlian said he received scores of racial e-mails from outside South Carolina after he talked about the vote on Fox News.

"You have a bunch of folks out there looking for some comfort in their racial issues. They have a problem with an African-American president," he said. "But was he motivated by that? I don't think so. I respectfully disagree with President Carter, though it gives validity to racism."

It' just stupid that i am called a racist for opposing Obama, when i am from a racially diverse family and being white, have never been racist in my life. It is far worse to be labeled a racist

I agree. I was not attempting to justify such labeling. I was pointing out (and obviously not doing a good job) that when a majority of people remained silent when others who opposed the policies of a prior administration were labeled as unpatriotic, terrorist-loving, looney scum, it breeds acceptance for the behavior you are now experiencing. It's kind of like Rights. When they are squashed for others, and people do nothing, then they have little recourse when theirs are violated in the same manner.

More dissembling. I recently opened an HSA and trust me the private sector verified who I was. Pulled our medical records, called us to ask about various prescriptions 10 years ago, we filled out reams of paperwork, etc.

I'm sure the liberals in congress were trying to protect the insurance industry by removing the verification. What a joke.

Yes that is what I want. Is it so terrible that I want my tax dollars to only go to those not breaking the law?

Nothing was removed from the original legislation. Two proposed amendments were voted down.

I personally happen to think verification is great, and I do want the illegal immigration problem dealt with (in all vectors). What I do want is for people to conduct themselves with appropriate decorum, regardless of their differences.

Now, I won't claim that this Congressman is without a doubt a racist. I don't know him, and I have not extensively studied what information is available on him. What I am saying is that he most likely has heard lies before, told to his face. If he has not called out each and every person who has lied to him, what made him violate the protocols and rules of the body of which he is a member? Could he not restrain himself as many of his peers did? Did his leadership have to tell him to apologize for him to do it (his words, not mine or my interpretation)? I am really trying to give him the benefit of the doubt here, but without him stating publicly what motivated his outburst, it's pretty difficult to entirely rule out him being motivated by race to be have as he did.

The GOP would love nothing more than the Dems to go this route.

It's too late the Dems have already gone this route and now Jimmy Carter has jumped on board. I know major Political blunders when I see them and this time the Dems turned a advantage for them into a disaster (hasn't turned into a storm yet but there is no stopping it now give it 48-72 hours).

Again, I wonder if this is all a short-term gain for the GOP.

It's good for the radio, cable news...

But look at the demographics of the country.

The GOP is going to have a hard time attracting minority voters when you never see any people of color at Republican events. Heck, now it seems like you see less than ever before.

I was wondering when the worlds oldest, guilty white liberal was going to drop the other shoe.

This is the ultimate insult to anyone who really has been targeted by racism or prejudice.

Here's the video to prove the point: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2009/09/15/carter_claims_there_is_racist_tone_against_obama.html

Carter is a disgrace to the title of President of the United States. His previous stupidities are completely trumped by this.

The bigger problem to me is that there will be time when the labels are appropriate, but if we cry wolf all the time then we will be desensitized to when the real wolves come to prey. I just think that this incident is one of incivility and partisan anger. I don't see racism and I think it is wrong and dangerous to interject it.

It's too bad your side of the isle does not understand or embrace this reasoned mindset.

Well, at least one of us must ;)

It's not unique to a party. It's the same intellectual laziness and political potshotting that was done when Repubs said, Libs don't support our troops, Libs are commies, Libs hate America, Libs are the enemy within, Anti-American, etc.

All symptoms of the same darn disease. I just am willing to call out my side. When we're idiots I believe in calling us idiots. I don't like destructive conversation. In my view, unless something new comes out, those slandering Wilson as a racist are idiots. He was just a hothead.

Maybe and if so it is a shame. It is becoming readily apparent that neither the Republicans, but especially the Democrats are going to allow the Election of the first black President to move the country into a post racial society. I think the country would have been better served if somehow the first minority president had been a Republican.

Twelve percent (12%) of voters nationwide believe that most opponents of President Obama’s health care reform plan are racist. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 67% of voters disagree, and 21% are not sure.

In recent days, several Democrats have suggested that racism is a factor. The most prominent to make that accusation is former President Jimmy Carter.

Eighty-eight percent (88%) of Republicans reject the notion that most of the opponents are racist. So do 78% of voters not affiliated with either major party. However, just 39% of Democrats share that view. Twenty-two percent (22%) of those in the president’s party say that most of the opposition to his plan comes from racists, and another 39% are not sure.

The president’s health care proposal has encountered stronger opposition than anticipated by the White House. For most of the summer, a majority of the nation’s voters opposed the plan. Following the president’s nationally televised speech last week, support for the plan increased temporarily. However, support is now back to pre-speech levels.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.

During that speech, Republican Congressman Joe Wilson shouted “You Lie” after the president asserted that illegal immigrants would not be covered under his health care plan. Wilson subsequently apologized to Obama. But the South Carolina congressman was formally rebuked by the House on a generally party-line vote yesterday, although Democratic leaders downplayed charges by some that his outburst was racially motivated.

However, Wilson’s comment helped focus part of the discussion on taxpayer-subsidized health care coverage for illegal immigrants rather than other aspects of the presidnet's plan. That forced the White House to issue a clarification of its position and added a further complication for advocates of the plan. Eighty-three percent (83%) of voters nationwide say that people should be required to prove they are citizens before receiving government health care benefits.

Only one percent (1%) of those opposed to the health care plan believe that most of the opposition comes from racists.

Among Obama’s strongest supporters, those who Strongly Approve of his job performance, 35% say most opponents are racists, 32% disagree and 33% are not sure.

Among African-American voters, 27% say most opponents are racist, 25% disagree, and 48% are not sure.

Fifty percent (50%) of white Democrats reject the charge of racism, but 15% say it’s true.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll recorded a modest bounce in support for Obama immediately following the speech. However, like the bounce in support for the health care plan, it has begun to fade.

I think the House/Senate just vindicated Wilson by amending both bills to include verification of eligibility.

Vindicated him for being rude?

Or are you implying that the end justifies the means?

It has been proven that a person can be polite, abide by the norms and standards of their association and civilized society and still get their point across. It's too bad this Representative chose a course of action and commentary that would have been intolerable had it occurred an Administration earlier.
