Old Bay
http://www.wheels.ca/Article%20Category/article/781881 VW unveils 282 m.p.g car at Frankfurt Sep 15, 2009 Comments on this story (7) The Associated press FRANKFURT–Volkswagen AG unveiled a number of new cars at the Frankfurt Auto Show Tuesday, including the L1, a two seat hybrid concept that could get about 96 km per litre of fuel, or about 282 miles per Imperial gallon (1.0 L/100 km). The L1 will be powered by a turbo diesel and electric motor and weighs only about 840 pounds (380 kilograms), far lighter than most cars on the road. "If the L1 were to go into production in 2013, it would debut an entirely new lightweight car concept and introduce a new era in automotive production," VW said. Volkswagen, also officially unveiled the E-Up!, an electric car which should go into volume production in 2013, and a new Polo and a new Golf model, both compacts, among others. "The common denominator of all these new Volkswagens: maximum efficiency," Volkswagen said. "On the timeline between today, tomorrow and the future, these new models of the Polo, Golf, Passat ... represent the sustainable and affordable technologies of the present. Creating a window to the immediate future, on the other hand, are the E-Up and the L1 concept cars," VW said.
G.A.C.O.L.B.
Lol. That might be the stupidest looking car yet. EDIT: It would be tight though if you could both drive it and use it for it's original purpose: as a one man submarine.
MumboSauce
looks better than those washing machine on wheels smart cars at least.
The 12th Commandment
If it's electric it could be a submarine too! VW is coming out with some good solutions in the pre-alternative energy, post cheap oil auto industry. Their diesels are very efficient now and do away with most of the bad things we always thought about diesel. Not the best looking concept car I've seen though. hockeysc23
looks better than those washing machine on wheels smart cars at least. Agreed and for 282 miles per gallon ... thats one car I can tolerate looking crazy versus a prius. If you click through the slide show how hot does Audi's new R8 and the new Lambo look. Im going to ask my manager for a raise .....

USS Redskins
Are they going to make regular human sized vehicles in the future? I love my SUV (Ford Explorer)-the only car I can fit into comfortably without turning my legs into pretzels - I am 6ft 5. It Sucks paying so much in gas and I would love to not pollute as much but will I be able to find an alternative that can fit myself, wife and 3 kids! Or is the future only for single, medium to small sized people?
GoSkins561
Damn, motor cycles are probably safer than that thing.
China
What happens when you get hit by a soccer mom in an SUV? That thing looks so small that an SUV might just go right over it without touching it. Seriously though, there should be no issues. It may get 282 miles per gallon, but it is so small it probably only holds one gallon of gas and thus has the same range as your average car. zoony
That thing looks so small that an SUV might just go right over it without touching it. Theres an idea. Make all the small cars wedge shaped (battle bots style) so the big, gaudy, SUV drivers sail off to their deaths in a front end collision. Reverse things a bit.
