***December 8th Update***

My wife and I just got back from the Ultrasound, and it's going to be a girl. Appears to have everything important...fingers/toes, kidneys...a spine, etc. Due date has been moved up two days to April 27th. We're pretty excited about the whole thing.

*************

Yes, it's another one of those threads, sorry guys. Figured I'd share with everyone though. I'm joining the fatherhood ranks.

We've known for a little while, based on pregnancy tests and other stuff, but waited to say anything until my wife had her first doctor's appointment, which was this morning. Wanted to make sure everything was in good working order, etc.

So that's that, the initial due date is April 29th, 2010. Now I'm sure some of you have questions, so I'll attempt to answer a few here before you ask.

1. Has is sunk in yet?

No, it has not. We're only around (best guess) 8 weeks right now, she's not showing yet, so it really hasn't become reality, other than the fact that I'm telling people about it. I suspect that will hit me like a ton of bricks relatively soon, probably the first time my wife yells at me irrationally.

2. Was this planned?

Not exactly. We had intended on having kids in about two years. As in, getting pregnant 1 year from now, having the first kid in 2011. This was so that the kid would not arrive until I was finished with my Master's Degree. As it is, I'll have three classes to complete me degree with a newborn. That will be interesting, to say the least.

3. Are you happy?

Yes, shocked but happy. Secretly, I got all the happiness taken care of, then went to check the sports calendar to make sure April 29th didn't interfere with anything major. SCORE! Doesn't interfere with football or March Madness. I love baseball, but it's early in the season and not the playoff race, so no biggie. It will be in the middle of playoff hockey, which I fully expect the Caps to be involved in, but I'll manage. Could also interfere with Draft Day. Anyway, if my kid ever wonders why their middle name is Varlamov, you'll know the Caps did well.

4. Will this make you a nicer poster on ES?

I'll throw in the caveat that I don't think I'm a bad poster, though I have no idea what my user notes say. However, I do tend to be thrown into an irrational rage about certain things, suck as overuse of emoticons, poor grammar and spelling, or shorthanded, lol-style typing. Not to mention repetitive threads. I sometimes make that displeasure very clear.

I suppose we all have to grow up sometime. Is this one of those widespread promises to suddenly become an angel around here? No, that would be silly, and I doubt I'd ever be able to stick to it completely. Someone will start a thread (or many in the Stadium) that I feel is worthy of scorn and I'll accidentally let loose with something I shouldn't.

No if anything, I'll probably just try to breathe a little more deeply, smile a little more, and try not to make fun of those of you who are illiterate and can't express yourself without the use of idiotic faces and infantile text-speak, which belies your poor breeding and lack of decent educat....

*ZAP*

Ouch! Oops, sorry, that was the cattle prod. See, I'm getting better at this already. Shoot, at this rate, I might even be willing to accept Virginia Tech as a legitimate football team. Eventually.

Anyway, I guess that's enough for now. I can answer whatever other questions you have, but I figured I'd let the ES family know about my impending family addition. And I'll chat with some of you about it at the ES/RR Tailgate this weekend.

Thanks all, like I said, hasn't really set in yet, but soon I'm sure.

Congrats, Patrick.

:groupwave:

I will make sure the wife is not served any Hand Grenades at the tailgate Sunday. :hysterical:

She won't be there, you know she only comes to 1 preseason game a year, if that. But yeah, she's cut out the drinking.

congrats man....I remember we were just talking about your "plan" on having a kid several months ago in the back yard while getting hammered....haha. I remember the part about interfering with sports.

Hopefully you will still be aloud to come out on fight night after the baby is born!

Congrats Pat,

I assume this child will be raised as a Penn State fan aswell as a Skins fan.

Well, the Skins fan part is pretty much assured. I'll do my best on the Penn State front, but if/when they go to college many years from now, it's possible they'll go to a D-1 school and forsake me. But I'll try.

On the Skins part, you know how some people have rebellious children? You know, kids that decide to become Dallas fans just to spite their parents? I already told my wife that wouldn't be tolerated in our house, that the kids would come home to find their stuff in a pile on the front lawn.

Was I kidding...yes? But I'll have no problems leaving them at home. If they don't want to be Skins fans, they don't get to take advantage of Daddy's season tickets. They can stay home and do whatever it is disobedient children do, wearing Eagle Green or whatever.

Well, I wasn't kidding about the sports calendar part, hell I even told my wife that. I told her mid-late February was fine, early April was good. Most of the summer months.

I'll still be coming out, she's pretty cool about that kind of stuff. Hopefully we'll have a relatively easy child so it won't be much of an issue when I take off.

Congrats dude on the future Redskins fan and Maryland Terp Graduate :D:)

While I appreciate the congratulations, I can not endorse the Terrapins in this thread.

Jason still comes out all the time....and he has two kids. He just has to wait until they go down for the night.

You know what the coolest part about your wife getting pregnant is?! You have a Designated Driver always on call for 9+ months (make sure she nurses the baby and doesn't use formula ;)
