Baltimore DMA: No Skins Game Weeks 3, 5, 11 in 2009

OK, so we all remember the griping and moaning about the Redskins ROAD game in Philadelphia last year not airing in Baltimore despite rules requiring secondary markets to air our road games. (Last year's thread ... http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?t=263202.)

I'm here to tell you that, barring schedule changes, it will happen three times this season:

Week 3: Skins at Detroit

Week 5: Skins at Carolina

Week 11: Skins at Dallas

Just as it was last year, these three will be when the Ravens are at home on CBS (on a CBS doubleheader day) and we're on the road at the same time.

When that scenario happens here - Skins at home early on Fox and Ravens on the road at the same time - the league has required WUSA (CBS/DC) to air the Ravens game against our home game, despite the primary rule that no game is to air against ours.

However, WBFF (Fox/Baltimore) is not being held to the same fire that we are here in Washington. That means Redskins fans in the Baltimore DMA who can't get DC stations will not be able to see the Redskins play in Detroit, Carolina and Dallas.

Start lodging your complaints now, kids ... the Dallas game is only 10 weeks away and we know how slow things work in the broadcast industry.

cheers

Wow.

Great looking out and an absolute failure on the NFL's part.

I looked for this when the schedule came out and foresee plenty of griping about Week 11 when the Ravens host the Colts while we are at Dallas at the same time (early). It's a CBS doubleheader week so there's no way our game goes to 1605. And CBS already has three games at 1615: Jets-Pats, Chargers-Broncos, Bengals-Raiders. The first two are strong enough to carry the DH and the night game is Eagles-Bears which, until Urlacher's season ending injury, I didn't see moving. (I still don't see that moving.) Look for WBFF to air an awesome Cardinals-Rams matchup at 1605 instead of Redskins-Cowboys.

Meanwhile, it will be Week 4 when we host the Bucs early on a Fox-DH day while the Ravens are at the Patriots. WUSA will be forced to air the Ravens against our game. The two 1605 CBS games that week are Jets-Saints (Sanchez-Brees) and Bills-Dolphins (Bills looking good tonight), both of which are interesting games.

Again, the question that has yet to be answered is why WUSA (CBS/DC) is being held to the fire on this secondary market BS and WBFF (Fox/Bal) is not.

Hopefully, enough people see this now and start e-mailing and calling WBFF.

cheers

I hate that so much. I don't understand why they don't always show the Redskins. This past weekend there were only two games on in Baltimore. The Ravens at 1 and the Skins at 4. It's just annoying. All of us Bmore fans should meet somewhere to watch those games that aren't on TV.

Is there somewhere you can go to see if you will be affected or not???

I live on the MD side of the MD-PA border and would like to know now if ill be affected so I can make other plans.....

First question ... from where do you get your local stations? Start there ...

For Week 1, it was because Baltimore was hosting an AFC opponent (which puts the game on CBS) and it was a Fox-DH week.

Who do I contact about this? It's absurd that living in 100 feet inside Carroll County causes me to miss 3 Redskins' games this year.

People in Harford County get Redskins' games, as well as Ravens' games.

Locally, I would start with the Fox affiliate and ask what they plan to air especially since they did not put up the list of games like they did last year: http://www.foxbaltimore.com/newsroom/sports/old/schedules/nfl_sched_2008.shtml

After that, I couldn't honestly tell you. Try your local elected officials, the league's public relations office, the local media. Perhaps the Redskins so they know that Baltimore, as a secondary market, is not airing our road games when they are required to do so.

Again, the first instance (of three this season) happens one week from Sunday when we play in Detroit.

good luck ...

that's what the ticket is for.

But if by NFL rules it should be on 45, and 45 chooses not to broadcast it, does the Ticket black it out as if 45 was broadcasting it even though they don't?? Like this past weekend, The Ticket had the game blacked out and you had to watch 45.

Picture the same scenario except 45 chooses not to air the game.

How will this affect the October 18th game when the Ravens and Redskins are both scheduled to play at 1:00 on CBS???????

WUSA should air the Redskins, per primary market rules regarding a sellout. WJZ should air the market team as well ...

The same thing happened in 2007 when we were at Green Bay and the Ravens hosted (I believe) the Rams. Both games were on Fox concurrently.

I hate to broach the subject but it's situations like these that can be avoided if the two cities were treated as a single market for the purposes of NFL scheduling.

The rule of thumb here is that if the game is available locally, it MUST be blacked out on Ticket. The locals made this demand starting 2003 so they could viewers would see the local ads. (Don't get me started on scenarios of game switches and such; I've been beating down ST since this started and getting nowhere.)

In these three weeks I cited, Fox 45 is choosing to air a game in a different time slot. Since it is not available locally, The Ticket should carry it without incident.

From what i understand, the games are scheduled to be on fox, but just not fox 45 baltimore. The reason why the game was blacked out on the ticket this past sunday, i think is because it was already being aired on the local station. So just imagine the scenario in reverse when they don't show it on Fox 45, then it should air on the ticket.
