Should there be National Holiday or Federal Holiday for 9/11?

I was just talking to a friend about 9/11. I'm disgusted that this country lost its anger over this tragic event. If I were in charge, I would have blew up Afghanistan looking for that SOB. Anyone, and I mean anyone, who had ties to him would have been dead by now.

To answer the OP question, probably no. Predicto said it best. Not forgotten, but not celebrated.

I think it should be treated like Pearl Harbor day. Not forgotten, but not celebrated.

I was thinking the same thing. What is amazing is that this day will be another day in ten years. Like the Challenger exploding or JFK's assassination or Pearl Harbor. It will have meaning, but not resonance for many. It's amazing when the seminal events in your life become history and while they may not lose their importance, they lose so much of their immediacy and heat.

I disagree with that. The WTC was a national symbol and the images of it going down will always be in everyone's mind. 9/11 will never be just another day. September 11 will never be known as September 11. We all know it as 9/11.

I don't disagree with you that it will always be an important day, but think about how you feel about the Lincoln assassination. Do you feel that with the same intensity as you do 9/11? How about JFK's assassination? Does the thought of Pearl Harbor make you rage or cry? Fifteen years from now, there will be a bunch of folks wandering around for whom this event will be nothing but an event in a history book or that people talk about. They will know it was important, they will understand its significance, but they won't feel it. And many of us also will feel it less.

Although those events were important, this is one of the few times this country was attacked on the main land. And remember, we were attacked four different times on that day(I count United 93 as an attack). MSNBC showed the exact coverage they had on September 11, 2001 on 9/11. The History channel showed nothing but 9/11 on September 11. I don't think that will change anytime soon.

I think if you met someone who was in their prime in the early 60's they would argue vehemently that the murder of sitting President shocked the world and impacted people with equal impact. I think time has also allowed us to look differently at Watergate. Think about how often you think about the war of 1812. Can you tell me the date that Washington DC was burnt to the ground and the White House was destroyed?

I'd guess that a good percentage of people don't even realize that what we see in DC isn't the original White House.

No. Wanna know why? Look at Memorial Day. It is supposed to be a day to memorialize all those who died fighting for this country. What is it really? The start of summer. The first "cookout" of the year. The day the pools open. A day off school/work. 99% of the people in this country don't even stop to think about the fallen on this day. Do you really want 9/11 to be like that?
