Drew Brees should be a Redskin

6 TDs! 400 plus yards passing. Making Jeremy Shockey relevant again :hysterical:

This is a mistake of management not getting this guy to DC

Why?

Well, a good front office staff would have seen what we had in the QB situation in 2004-2005, and paid attention to the pipeline.

Brees, in a Coryell like offense in 2004 had a breakout season for the Chargers.

Gibbs clearly had no faith in Ramsey by the end of the 2004 season.

The FO, as opposed to looking down the pipeline and clearly deducing that a team that picked a QB 4th overall would not be able to keep Brees, would have set things up to acquire Brees once he hit the FA market. The good young QB we were looking for, with the big arm to throw downfield (and apparently now eat pancakes off other teams defenses)

Instead, 3 picks blown on Jason Campbell

Is it hindsight 20/20 here? Yea it is. But thinking back now, this looks like a no-brainer, and something a good GM would have thought about (or made a move for after the 2005 season, with probably fewer picks needed)

First off, he didn't have 400 yards. 350-something. And lots of teams passed on Brees, man. He was considered by many damaged goods. So I'm not sure you can blame us for not going after the guy.

  • 2 weeks later...

30 teams passed on Tom Brady back in '01 too.

We should have gotten Boldin instead of Taylor Jacobs.

I know I'm just echoing what everyone else has said, but hindsight is 20/20. Who knew that Drew Brees was going to come back from injury? The Saints took a gamble and it paid off. Not many other teams were willing to do so.

I know it's definitely a what if situation. I would love to have Brees. He's probably my favorite non-Redskin in the NFL. But we don't have him and we need to figure out how to be a good team without having made all the "right" moves.

At the time, Brees was a very high risk, coming off serious shoulder surgery, and very expensive. Miami was the only serious bidder other than the Saints.

Can you imagine the reaction on ES at the time?

Vinny is a moron, signing a QB coming off major shoulder surgery. We know this guy is gonna never be the same.

He got dumped for a rookie. A real GM knows when to dump a QB, and the Chargers did that. We swoop in again and pick up another teams garbage.

Hell, look at the reaction when we drafted Kelly. There had to have been 1,352 threads before we drafted Kelly. There were 1,284,982 threads started after the draft on how stupid the pick was.

I really hate these we should have done this threads. No one knew at the time Brees was going to be what he is. No one knew Tom Brady was going to bee what he is. We took risks too just like these teams did. Theirs worked out. Ours havent so far (at least not at the QB position). One of these days it will work out. Just gotta keep trying is all and do the best we can with what we have year in and year out.

Brees is a free agent in 2010, if Jason does leave us like I think he will, We might need to take a look at him again.

He'll likely finish his career as a Saint. His play has brought too much excitement to that team and city when they most needed it. It would be a shame if he doesn't retire there.

The fact that we haven't had a decent quarterback in 10 years (and I'm being very generous by calling Brad Johnson a decent QB) proves how badly our front office has been in acquiring players... aside from all the other obvious flops.

We haven't had a franchise QB since Joey T in 1985. Williams, Schroeder and the rest were stop gaps. Johnson was the best that played for us. We could have re-signed Trent Green. And Rypien had "ONE" great year in his career (not exactly a franchise QB). It's been almost 25 years since we could say we have a franchise QB.

Drew Brees probably wouldn't have performed for you guys anyway. The OC would have held him back or something. Your team picks up all these big names and does nothing with them....Drew Brees would have been no different.

as painful as it is and the fact that hes a giants fan makes it painful even more hes correct 100 percent...

I have to agree with those posters who reminded everyone that Brees was coming off a shoulder injury and there were only 2 teams that wanted him, Miami and NO. Also, to that point, Brees had only one really good season, 2004, where he threw for 210 yds/game, 27 TD, 7 Int (vs 2003 where he had 191/11/15 and 2005 where he had 223/24/15). Based on those stats, he appeared to be a player who had one great season, threw almost 1 int per game in '05, and was also injured that season.

To the OP - can you tell us who the Skins should draft next season, before the draft, so your picks can be scrutinized. Looking back and then making assessments reminds me of a M*A*S*H episode (anyone remember that) where Klinger told Hawkeye that his mom had a premonition about Pearly Harbor. Hawkeye asks him when she had it. Klinger responded, "December 9th".

Next time someone posts that the Skins 'should have' picked up player "X", see if it's December 6th or December 9th.

I think the real issue was the concerns with the shoulder. We have had some bad luck with things like this, which scared the leadership. I wish we would have tried it.
