How dangerous is Democracy?

We are a Republic, not a democracy. Heres a good qoute about the dangers of Democracy.

This is one of my favorites. From Alexander Tyler. No, he wasn't writing about the United States. This quote is well over one hundred years old. Tyler was writing about the fall of the Athenian Republic.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage."

Exactly, we are a constitutional republic. A nation that protects individual rights, but sadly we have too many in DC who do not understand that. We have some on this board as well.

Democracy, is a system of government where the will of the majority rules unrestricted by any law. A democracy can be just a dangerous as a dictatorship. Our founding fathers did not want a democracy. The Founders opposed majority rule, because they recognized that individual rights and liberty would be compromised and there would be no guarantees to protect the minority.

"...democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights to private property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths." --James Madison

When people claim this country is a democracy, tell them NO IT"S NOT.

Phanatic, thanks for the quote. I never thought of the difference between democracy and a republic before. I see what direction our country is heading in, and I use the word "our" loosely. I think we are at the selfishness to complancency stage. Is there any example of a society, nation, or empire reverting it's political notions so it can save it's self from the final stage.

You are right about the constitution about us being a Union. However if you look at the def of democracy we are one as well.

Democracy:

1.Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.

2.A political or social unit that has such a government.

3.The common people, considered as the primary source of political power.

4.Majority rule.

5.The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community.

We the people elect our leaders. We the people are also the political power. We wouldn't be having this discussion if We the people would vote more than 50%.

what law says we restrict the majority?

if we elect the people people to represent us then that is a democracy

the problem here is not everyone does vote, but they still have the option to vote they choose not to participate

you can argue we don't allow the young to vote but that is going a little to far, you can also argue the illegal immagrants don't vote, but why should they be since they don't even pay the same taxes

I did not say we restrict the majority.

In a true democracy the will of the majority rules. There is no protection for the minority in a democracy. Democracy does not guarantee you freedom, private property, individual rights, etc.

ok that makes sense now

true democracy can't work with human beings.

first of all, we are hierarchial

secondly, we are prone to violence.

it follows that there will ALWAYS be tyanny by the majority.

hence, the system of checks and balances.

now, ironically enough, there also can be tyranny by the MINORITY.

look around
