Sticksboi05
The passing of legend Walter Cronkite had me thinking about those of you old enough to remember when TV was structured to have truly singular voices. Well, the question in this thread is, what was your generation the last to experience, that future generations never did or never will... obviously this only applies up to Generation Y (1982-1994) as Generation Z is the latest generation... And we'll use psychological studies that show that you can formulate true, distinct memories from age 5 onwards, so if you were 2 when it happened, that doesn't count. So tell us, what was your generation the last to experience...

fullnelson9999
the last generation to regularly play outside. With advances in technology, i see more and more kids staying inside rather than going outside. My brothers and all of their friends? Inside all day. Playing Xbox. I know this isnt true for all kids, but its definitely becoming a trend. Also, kids movies. I dont see iconic movies being made like they used to, at least ones that were a significant part of growing up. The Sandlot, etc. They need to make more coming of age movies. I dont see them anymore.

Sticksboi05
Telephones that you actually dialed (in a circular motion) and was a true land-line operation. That's a good one. I'll say a couple. The last to experience 2D gaming. And the last to understand a time when cell phones weren't the main method of communication. When I wanted to invite someone over back as a kid, I had to find their number in a directory and call them with our landline. Oh, and the last to understand when signing on the internet meant you couldn't receive a phone call.

Sticksboi05
CRT, that is so true. Man our old TV in retrospect was small but it was reliable and did us a great service. And how about VHS as the main way to watch a movie. And a VCR where you had to wait for it to rewind instead of going to scene selection.

Oh yeah I agree with you all the way....Sportscenter was must see TV now...I'd rather come here to this web-site before ESPN now. Sportscenter used to be consistantly good....before it became (here comes a new term) "Olbermannized" with every anchor trying to make jokes all the time. It was funny at first but after a while it became annoying.
Springfield
Cassette tapes. Sticks made me think of this. I was up in the woods (of PA) last weekend and we were listening to a tape of The Who while hanging out at the fire pit. I heard a song I really liked and had to go rewind it to re-listen to it. Then I had to flip the tape over to listen to the other side.

The only show I even respect on ESPN now is PTI. Seriously, Stuart Scott and the white guy with the glasses, how did one of the most revolutionary shows in history turn to this nonsense. I remember back in 98 watching their special on (what should've been) the last shot/game MJ played in, it was just facts and analysis, not this smart aleck, boo yah crap. Keeping in the spirit of the thread...ours is the last generation to have seen Chris Berman as a viable dedicated sports journalist...now he is like that old uncle who thinks dropping his pants or "pull my finger" is still funny. We are the last generation to know a special effects movie being done with completely with models and not CGI. Lombardi's_kid_brother
Are we really nostalgic for Sportscenter? We are an advanced society. Born in 1973. Last generation to have ever gotten up to change the channel on the television. Last generation to manually roll down a car window. Last generation to ride bikes without a helmet. Last generation to use rabbit ears. Last generation to dial 7 numbers. (This actually may be generation Y). Last generation to watch network Saturday morning cartoons. (In college, a buddy and I stayed up all night drinking and thought it would be awesome to stay up and watch Saturday morning cartoons while drinking some more. We didn't have cable in the dorms so we just had to deal with broadcast networks. And there were no goddamn cartoons). Last generation to use returnable bottles (with the possible exception of Michigan). Last generation to ride in a car without a seatbelt as a child. (Hell, in the 70s, you were allowed to sit on the arm rest in the front seat of the car. If my parents had ever been rear-ended, I would still be airborne). Last generation to see "Leaded" gas. (A friend in high school had a car that used leaded gas. There was one gas station within 25 miles that sold it). Last generation to see an evening paper. (Could be a bit off here). Last generation to get excited about the Christmas Catalogue? (Again, could be Generation Y But in 1979, the day the Penney's Christmas Catalogue arrived was the greatest day of the year. It was actually better than Christmas).

And rabbit ears, hmm, that's debatable also sincem ost with cable in the 90s had it on one TV.

I may have overstated that. I was thinking the last generation that HAD to use rabbit ears to get tv. I think we finally had the very basic "cable" package in 78 or 79. We got WTBS and USA - which was, like, going to the moon. I can remember by childhood tv numbers. 2 - CBS 3 - USA 4 -ABC 5 - TBS (different than one) 6 - same as channel 9 (until we got HBO in 81) 7 - CBS 9 - NBC 10 - nothing 11 - NBC 12 - local independent channel - showed Andy Griffith and Gomer Pyle re-runs and cartoons and B-movies 13 - PBS We could sometimes get two UHF channels for a while, but I barely remember that. Sticksboi05
The coke thing! Gen Y is the last to experience glass bottles at the norm for Coke. In fact, my mom at an antique store a few days ago saw glass bottle coke from the 1998 Superbowl.
