Redskins:Victory_or_Death
LINK Derrick Mason retires after 12 years. * Derrick Mason * #85 * Wide Receiver * Baltimore Ravens * Height: 5-10 * Weight: 192 * Born: Jan 17, 1974 - Detroit, MI * College: Michigan State * Draft: 1997 - 4th round (2nd pick) by the Tennessee Oilers “I have had a tremendous career and I played for two great teams, I had fun. In my career, I have been able to do everything but win a Super Bowl. I’ve had the opportunity to play on great teams and with great players. After 12 years, I have seen it all and done it all,” Mason stated. “Right now, I am content with the decision I am making. All good things come to an end and I am ready to see what else life has to offer.”“I have been thinking about this since the season ended. Emotionally I am just not that enthused. I have not been that enthused to get up and work out…it was getting to that point. This decision has nothing to do with the contract situation; I have made enough money, more than enough money. Emotionally there are things that are more important. It’s time right now. I don’t know what’s going to happen from here, but it’s going to be really nice to see what life has in store for me. What I want people to remember about my NFL career is that I played hard…played hard in practice and the game. I tried to make everyone better and would do anything to help.” I would guess he was affected a lot by Steve McNair's death...

Redskins:Victory_or_Death
That's going to hurt the Ravens quite a bitThe Ravens are one of the few teams with a WR corp that is more questionable than our own.
terrifNick21
Whoa. Didn't see this coming. Really one of the more underrated players in the league.
Redskins:Victory_or_Death
Whoa. Didn't see this coming. Really one of the more underrated players in the league.Talking with some Ravens fan coworkers a few days ago, I told them I wouldn't be surprised if Mason retired. With the way he was talking about being emotionally drained, that there are more important things in life, and he was excited to see what life outside of football was like, led me to believe that he was VERY affected by McNair's death. Kind of a wake-up call, if you will.
OWUeagleMD
Might see an overreaction for Brandon Marshall in light of this. Normally I'd say it's out of character for Ozzie Newsome, but I think the Ravens felt like they were real contenders this year.

This just makes it a super priority.
OWUeagleMD
Frankly they could have used Marshall or Boldin W/O Mason retiring. This just makes it a super priority. I thought it would have been a mistake a week ago, and this hasn't changed my perspective. Marshall would cost them a 1st, 3rd, and enough money to make signing one of Ed Reed, Haloti Ngata, or Terrell Suggs an impossibility. That's too much to pay for someone who is one arrest from a six-game suspension and has yet to show that he has the maturity to alter his behavior enough to avoid that one arrest. Braxford
Mason was one of the most underrated WR's in the league. Solid career. This is really gonna hurt the Ravens.
RammsteinSkins
They could go out and get Plaxico :whoknows: Mason is probably the most underrated reciever of the past decade.
jthor99
Maybe it's just me, but I'm not buying this. From what I understand he was unhappy with his current contract. To quit 2 weeks before training camp is completley bushleague. If he follows through he's literally leaving the organization with their pants down. The fact that he hadn't sent the Ravens PR guy his offical retirement papers today (when he supposedly made the decision on Friday) leads me to believe his is bluffing management into a contract extension. Add that to the fact he made the announcement on a job search website that is owned by him and his agent.... (according to the Fox45 11 O'clock News)Might be B.S. after all. :whoknows:
SuperBash
He isn't retiring, he will get that extension he has been dying for then he will come out of his "retirement".

That's a definite possibility. On the other hand, it could be that he's s 35 year old, 12 year veteran, coming off of a surgery and very demanding football season, who's former teammate and friend just died, and it could be that he's simply ready to retire. I'm hoping he changes his mind though. It'd be pretty lousy for us to lose a second straight former Titan before the season starts to a surprise retirement.
