GOP Representative of Iowa, Steve King, was the only congressman to vote "no" against a plaque, to be placed in the Capitol, recognizing the history of slave labor. His vote of opposition stood alone against a cause that was, otherwise, overwhelmingly easily approved.

The House of Representatives voted 399-1 for the Capitol Visitor's Center to house a plaque acknowledging the slave labor that went into the actual construction of the Capitol building. The resolution itself has information that has been quietly kept for many years. For example, slaves built the "Statue of Freedom" that sits on top of the Capitol Dome.

The "yes" votes crossed party lines, and some of the staunchest Republicans like Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann voted without hesitation, according to the Huffington Post.

Olbermann on the subject:

"Dateline, Washington, number two, best new form of racist, Congressman Steve King, Republican Moon. They wanted to put up a plaque at the new Capitol visitor‘s center to acknowledge that must of the magnificent sweep of the Capitol building was built by slaves. Not built by slaves, thus white people suck. Not built by slaves, and they‘re owed reparations. Just a plaque saying, think about this. The House approved the plaque, 399 votes to one. The one, Steve King. He said it wasn‘t an accurate depiction of history. Great. We now have a slavery denier. He‘s in Congress."

I could probably go on and on, but these were the ones I saw before I came to this thread.

Consider the source

I know this is the kind of stuff Wonkette thrives off of, but that's where I first read about the story.

I'm not saying more people should have voted against it, I'm just saying that calling him a slavery denier is just as dishonest as Hannity and others twisting Obama's words around to fit their partisan rants.

I think he meant Olbermann.

Maybe I need to re-read it, but I still don't quite understand how this plaque distracts or diminishes the Judeo-Christian edict or influence. It's been a long week I may just not be processing, but it sounds to me like he voted against it not on its merits, but on the basis of a long standing grudge not directly related to this particular plaque.

Then again, you know what Shakespeare said about the U.S. Congress:

"A plaque on both their Houses"

:silly:

That's what it sounds like to me too. It was a protest vote. Maybe he knew it would get his name in the news and the OP statement noticed.

From reading the statement he issued it sounds like this plaque was the quid to the having "in God we trust" in the CVC's pro quo. Sort of a "vote for the plaque and we'll let you put in God we trust in the CVC" deal. It seems to me like the Congressman was objecting to having to barter for "in God we trust".

Why is it "political correctness" ? Slave labor, free labor built the Capital and that fact should be made known to all who visit there.

I think he was referring to the removing any reference to God....but who knows:silly:
