Value of Preseason Games?

So everybody always harps that preseason games are meaningless and even if players play like gods, its meaningless because its a) against nobodies B) only preseason and starters don't take it seriously or c) coaches are not playing to win, but merely trying various formations, etc.

What's your opinion on the matter? Can we determine how 'good' players are during preseason? If a player comes out and plays lights out, do they get the benefit of the doubt until proved otherwise?

How and when would it be justified replacing an incumbent starter with a newcomer based off preseason performance?

the final score is meaningless but watching your starters and how they do is pretty important i think. also your backup guys get a chance to shine. if i remember, last year chris horton looked damn good in preseason and it followed him most of the season.

and we should get a good look at colt if they give him some reps with the starters. itll be interesting to see how he plays against potential 1st string defenses and with wide receivers that arent bagging grocerys and wegmans.

I think there are benefits to the preseason. I think it is a great way for the younger guys and back ups to get game experience. If they play great than I think they should at least be given consideration - but Im sure the coaches factor in the level of the opposition at the time among other factors. I enjoy watching the Skins Preseason games but wont usually watch much of the other teams. The owners make out well in the Preseason I think.

i think they are tremendous in value.

for coaches.... they let you see what player is listening to what you tell them, what player is improving, and what player can actually go gamespeed. it let's you see how guys are against 1st, 2nd and/or 3rd rate talent

for players.... it gives you a chance to make the team, and if not, it gives you footage for other teams to see. it gives you experience of the speed of the pro game. it let's you see how your preparation translates on the field

for fans.... if you are more than a casual fan, it gives a preview of who should make the roster and what the depth chart will be. it all let's you know more about who is wearing our jerseys, outside of starters.

i for one, still enjoy preseason.... just not as much as week 1

Preseason value to the coaches and players or to fans? You did not specify because those are 2 different topics.

Of course the value to me is I get to watch games without the fear that a loss is the end of the season. I enjoy seeing new players and just enjoy the beginning of football season with a meanlngless transition game.

For coaches it gives them the opportunity to play guys who might add something. Otherwise those players would never have a chance. and for the young players, it gives them a chance at their dream. For the vets, it gives them a chance to get in shape as well as a chance to be injured and sit out the season.

Also, especially this year, it will be good to goto a preseason game to get a feel of how the parking, And TAILGATING will flow and work with the new changes everyone is talking about. I dont usually goto these games but i will this season.

I think the preseason games have meaning, as far as gauging how far the players have progressed from training camp up until that point. For this team, I obviously want to see progression from JC and the rest of the offense. I especially want to see what type of depth this team will have on the OL.

I think they're important, at least for coaches evaluating talent. Maybe someone they thought they could depend on would end up looking really bad, or maybe some relative unknown could shine. You can't always see these things in camps or OTAs. Maybe people who aren't die-hard fans aren't as entertained since they don't know who these people are, but for those of us who could probably name every single guy on even the 80 man roster, it's cool to see how they perform.

And specifically for our case, the 5th WR spot could very well be determined by how they perform in preseason, as could SSLB, RT, nickel corner, backup RB and backup QB.

I'd say the final score doesn't matter that much in preseason games. I think last year the Lions went undefeated in the preseason, we all know how well that worked out.

What I look for in the preseason is how well the first string offense and defense plays. Can the offense move the ball? Are we always going 3 and out? Does JC have his timing down the the WRs? Is the OL allowing any sacks or pressure? Is the defense missing tackles? Those are the kinds of things I look for.

To me the preseason is more about seeing what the reserves can do and how they react in a game situation. Playing well in practice is alot different than playing well in a game. I could care less if we went 0-4 in the preseason as long as our first string looks good.

Question, If the Lions win there first preseason game would that end the losing streak?

I enjoy preseason, just being able to relax and watch the skins. If the weather is nice I like to put my TV out on the deck and watch the game outside with a couple cold ones. I usually just try to get an idea whos going to be on the roster and learn the numbers of the guys that are wearing them.

The Lions were undefeated in last years pre-season games; it doesn't matter.

A player once said, "The pre-season ain't good for nothing except getting hurt."

Now for the back-ups and udfas this is their chance to make the roster or the first string (1-4 round rookies qualify for this category as well). For the fans it is on opportunity to see those players who may never play a single down in the regular season finally get to shine.

I actually don't think preseason means as much for the starters as it does for everyone else. I mean, it's important to make sure things are in sync with timing, blocking and whatnot, but I haven't seen any correlation between starter performance in preseason and how it turns out in the regular season. Good teams can play poorly, and bad teams can play well. I think the biggest part of preseason games is evaluating individual standout performance (good or bad), specifically on previous non-starters and solidifying the depth chart for each position.

I love preseason just because I like seeing what the fringe players on our team are capable of. Yeah the competition factor is skewed, but it's still fun to see some Redskins make athletic plays in a game situation.
