Portis don't even do that anymore. He is a little bit too discipline now. I hope that him dropping some weight will bring back some speed and he could start breaking more longer runs. I don't even need 64. Just give me some 20-25 yard runs, lol.

He hasn't broken a run that long since.

He had lots of 20-25 yeard runs last year.

It seems like he almost never breaks big ones off, but he was T3rd in the league last year with 13 20+ runs. DeAngelo Williams had 15 and AP had 20. What the difference seems to be is that Portis had 0 40+ runs, while the others at the top of the list had 4 or 5.

Now that I have thought about it, he did have some nice 20 yard runs. I remember the one he had in Dallas.

I guess I was off by 10 then. A couple of 40 yard runs next year will make me happy.

Ah yes i was at that game. First game back for Joe Gibbs, Portis take it to the house on his first carry. Too bad that is about the longest run he has had for a Touchdown. Oh well keep on doing what you do Portis. Hopefully slimming down will help you regain that homerun hitting power. You did damn well as a powerback for us with no blocking and 9men in the box.

The Redskins need better downfield blocking if they want Portis ripping off huge runs. Hopefully if Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly play more they'll help since they are bigger bodies than Moss and Randel El. Portis should have had about 4 huge runs to the house last season, but when he got into the open field he didn't have any help.

Portis took a screen for a huge run against the Bears in 07 that almost scored. Against the Texans in 06 too.

It was interesting actually, I just found this: http://archive.profootballweekly.com/content/archives2001/draft_2001/scoutingreports_rb.asp

Scouting report on Portis (and Betts too). Portis was apparently known for having great speed but not breaking many long runs in college as well.

That run emphasizes the importance of a good pass game that really forces all the second level to consider the pass threat. Since both the LB and DBs felt they had to deal with the pass threat when the d-line crashed there was no one to fill the cutback lanes and the second level guys had bad angles in the main because CP was able to get to the POA so cleanly along with all of them having to give serious attention to the possibility of the pass which slowed them down a bit.
