James Thrash has been released

Cartwright and Mitch are return men. Thrash, other than early in his career, isn't. Apples and oranges.

I don't know why you resent Thrash for stifling the development of younger players. If they earned their time on the field, Thrash would have been on the bench or out the door. But somehow, year after year, he was there on the 53 man roster, and often in the lineup. That's a tribute to him and his perserverance.

Actually somehow he ended up back on the eagles....and we had to trade a pick to get him back.

He was a good player, no more, no less. Not to be mentioned with Redskins greats.

Let him rest at that.

Like I said how will we ever replace him :hysterical: No one ever played special teams the way he did. Im sure there is no way a young hungry player could run down the field and down a punt like him. Come on man.

Those hungry young players often come away grasping air. Thrash did not. The two guys I recall making the most stops on returns the last few years are Rock and Thrash. Same goes for him filling the #3 WR spot. He knew where to line up and what the routes were; meanwhile the two guys behind him on the chart were struggling with both of those things, several hamstring pulls, and a set of creaky knees.

EDIT: Just saw the Hi there. :) in MC's doorknob thread. Kind of regret even trying to talk any sense into such a knucklehead.

Anyone thinking that they may go after other WRs, such as Boldin or Plax? I'm not to confident about the younger WRs being able to stay healthy or the Vet WRs for that matter.

Jets, Bears and Buccaneers are the 3 teams that have shown interest in him. I don't think we're in the mix at all. And that's probably a good thing.

James, you looked great in Burgundy and Gold. In my books, you will remain a consumate Skin! Thanks for all your contributions... Please rest up, and get well soon.

Having said that, I am glad to see the Skin Front Office making the right decision. Unfortunately, it was the ONLY decision that made sense. The Skins have to look at the youth/rookies they have to form a core group of key playmakers. This opens up the WR competition.

I think the statements made by Zorn, Dan & Vinny cover what most Redskins fans, myself included, think of your contribution to the Redskins organisation.

Now is the right time for a change in direction for this team on a playing front. Hopefully, you 're-appear' in a coaching capacitiy of some form / OR progress your career in the manner you wish.

I wonder about the timing of the release. Is he going to try to catch on somewhere else?

I found it curious when Zorn was directly asked about Thrash after OTA's on Thursday. Zorn confirmed he had spoken to Thrash then but implied they were still working out what the plan would be leading up to camp. I supsect Thrash had been told then but the team wanted to get some formal statements out so that he get the recognition he was deserving of.

I see no way that he goes to another team in the near future due to his injury. If he ever gets fit again, he'll probably be on 'Redskins stand-by' in case we are in dire need of a WR during the season.

I don't think he will be remembered at all.

He was a good team player, a good role player, and excelled at special teams.

I couldn't give you 5, much less one memorable James Thrash special teams play...while I know he had some good punt coverage plays, his plays will never even make Redskins replays of the past.

I will always remember the James Thrash td where he broke Terrence Newman's ankles. And I'll remember the '07 Philly game at Philly where he was the best receiver on the field that day.

Hard work. Leader. Locker room guy. Mentor.

That got him 30 catches in 3 years. Despite being our sole red zone receiver for 2 of those years, and our #3 throughout, his strong suits didnt translate into producing and winning us games. He stuck around because Gibbs loved him and then last year as our only WR that had a clue what the west coast involved. I didnt mind him in a #5WR/special teams role but even then he was a bit slow for my liking.

How about 4 great special teams plays in one game?

Best Thrash memory for me, the man flat out BEAT the Detroit Lions by himself in 2004 with his special teams play. He downed three punts inside the three, (one at the 3, one at the 2, and one at the 1) and returned a punt for 43 yards to set us up for a score.

Detroit simply couldn't get out of the shadow of their own posts almost all day thanks to James Thrash.

What great plays do you remember Monte Coleman making? Any of them in particular stand out? But he was a great Redskin. He consistently did his job, he led when a leader was needed, and he exemplified what has been known as a great Redskin since the glory days.

Thrash is no different.

You may forget him, but a lot of us won't.

Thrash is definitely someone to remember in Redskins history. He was someone to always count on as a 3/4 WR, and his special teams play will be missed. There are certain intangibles he brought with him that you don't find as often. He had many great special teams tackles, returns, and downed a lot of balls inside the 5. That is not something you hear of a player throughout their career. Plus he also brought leadership intangibles.

I would love for him to become an offensive/special teams coach. It'd be nice to start grooming some player coaches like we had in the past with Petitbon and Grimm.

Look I can name a lot of standout special teamers in the league. Thrash didn't top anyone's list.

And to compare him to Monte Coleman is almost an insult to Coleman.

He was a fine player, great "Gibbs" team guy. He played on a lot of BAD Redskins teams and 10 years from now won't leave anyone reminiscing.

He is a good guy, gave us his best.

Thanks Thrash.
