I wanted to be a Marine, but my head wouldn't fit in the jar.

I still wanted to be a Marine, but then I scored too high on my ASVAB test...

I thought about the Army, but I'm not a fan of prison food and rocks for beds...

So instead, I took my brain and headed to Lackland daycare center and served proudly in the USAF from 95-97 (Medical discharge for Asthma). I made E-3, and was a computer/radar tech on the AWACS. I completed USAF Survival school right here in Spokane, WA at Fairchild AFB. (BTW, where the Navy and Army send their airborne crew for survival school thank you very much).:D

trying to find a pic...

I am surprised at the amount of Marines here. I thought there would be more. I guess we really are the Few, The Proud... ;)

1,050,000 in Army (550,000 Regular Army, the rest Guard or Reserve)

500,000 in Navy

350,000 in Air Force

220,000 in Marines

They are the few, but not the only Proud! :)

I believe less than 10% in each are combat roles. Some one correct me if thats wrong.

Puts you well and above several Zoed. There's clearly a good reason or 30 why you have that diamond in there. There's 2 of them in your response. About my second year in,we got a First Shirt who had a plaque in his office that was given to him by fellow NCO's while he was stationed in England. It had a picture of a baby seal on it. He "won" it because he got rid of the most first termers than anyone else. Apparently by a wide margin. Quite proud of it as a matter of fact. I thought that was crap and that part of his job was to do what you said. That and help ease the transition that is a part of your first year or 2 in. We did not get along very well. Good for you and my bet is those kids are in pretty good hands with you taking care of them.

Thanks PCS, I really appreciate that.

Yea there's still plenty of Shirts who get off on being the hatchet man but I believe in holding supervision accountable/responsible for giving everyone a chance to succeed; even if someone screws up. I could have been shown the gate more than once during my career and look at me now. I couldn't be in a better job at this point in my career. Pretty rewarding job taking care of our Airmen. Hopefully I'll inspire a few to do well so they can grow up and take my place at the helm.

Great attitude. I think that had the first shirt I mentioned earlier,(we went round and round for about 6 months. Came out as a draw but it was a major drag fighting that political battle),and his even worse replacement,(was threatened by my "significant influence" amongst the Airmen),I may have stayed in. You get one or two airmen to follow your footsteps and you're doing well.

I can't tell you how many good ones like you have been run off by ass holes like the Shirt you mentioned. I've been a Shirt for almost eight months and I can count how many Airmen I've had to yell at on two fingers. You don't have to be a jerk to get an Airmen to do the right thing.

Wow...just saw this today. I was in the Navy. 1982 - 1991. The last 3 years was active reserve(which I hated). I was a hospital corpsman 3rd class when I left active duty in 1988. The corpsman rate was freaking hard to make rank in back in those days.

I liked being in the Navy. I got to go places I never would have been able to go to on my own dime. Had a blast, met lots of good people, learned alot about medicine and served with some corpsman who I would trust with my very life!

"The Marines have their few good men (or in my case women), Navy Corpsmen"! :D

I asked westbrook to take out his word Faggotedy as it is very offensive to certain people, especially those who served our country with honors....here is his response. Thought I'd PM a request rather than make it an issue on the board, but **** it.

The thread is on like the 5th page of the tailgate. No one will ever see it again. Also, you likening faggotedy to a racial slur is funny albeit disingenous at best.

"People like you who want to change other people's behavior based off of what offends YOU is hilarious and what is wrong with America. You want me to edit my post because it offends you? Even though you know that it offends you and you never have to read it again unless you choose to? What a joke. Grow up, toots."

Not asking you to change a behavoir, be bigoted all you want. and you call me toots? and I'm the one who has to grow up? sad sad little boy you are.

Its an intraservice rivalry. Pretty sure that he is not being serious about it. Would you take the same offense if it was a Redskins fan calling a Cowboys fan faggotedy (is that even a word)?

Also, there are mods for this type of thing. If you had an issue with his response, you should have PM'ed the response to one of the Mods instead of calling him out on the board.

I hated carring around the Dragons. Especially the night sights, batteries and coolant that went along with them. I guess that is why they phased them out. :whoknows:

Tomorrow is Veterans Day. It's a chance to pause, and to pay tribute -- for students to learn the struggles that preceded them; for families to honor the service of parents and grandparents; for citizens to reflect upon the sacrifices that have been made in pursuit of a more perfect union.

For history is filled with heroes. You may remember the stories of a grandfather who marched across Europe; an uncle who fought in Vietnam; a sister who served in the Gulf. But as we honor the many generations who have served, all of us -- every single American -- must acknowledge that this generation has more than proved itself the equal of those who've come before.

We need not look to the past for greatness, because it is before our very eyes.

This generation of soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen have volunteered in the time of certain danger. They are part of the finest fighting force that the world has ever known. They have served tour after tour of duty in distant, different and difficult places. They have stood watch in blinding deserts and on snowy mountains. They have extended the opportunity of self-government to peoples that have suffered tyranny and war. They are man and woman; white, black, and brown; of all faiths and all stations -- all Americans, serving together to protect our people, while giving others half a world away the chance to lead a better life.

In today’s wars, there's not always a simple ceremony that signals our troops’ success -- no surrender papers to be signed, or capital to be claimed. But the measure of the impact of these young men and women is no less great -- in a world of threats that no know borders, their legacy will be marked in the safety of our cities and towns, and the security and opportunity that's extended abroad. It will serve as testimony to the character of those who served, and the example that all of you in uniform set for America and for the world...Obama

I remember trying to get into the Air Force two years ago, knowing I needed a change in my life for the better. Step in the right direction. Studied my tail off for the ASVAP, scored a 72, and got all the way to meps at Ft. Mead. After all that, I get through to find out I had to wait until a job becomes avaliable because I have a GED. All the younger high school graduates got sworn in even though they all scored lower then me. I stopped calling my recruiter after a month or so because he wouldn't return my phone calls.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for anyone willing to lay their life on the line to protect my freedom to shot for the moon, miss, and land amonst the stars in this country. But that left a horrible taste in my mouth that I won't ever forget.

I remember asking my uncle if he thought I was gonna be successful out here, make something of myself after that debacle. He said "I don't know"...

Don't let some ass hole keep you from doing something for your future. There's plenty more recruiters where he came from. A lot of them are so worried about their quota's they concentrate on the easy ones, the ones who just want in and don't care what job they get. The get so wrapped around the numbers they lose track of what's important and that's putting good people in the military.

I'm here to tell you now the AF is begging for folks to come in. Our numbers are down and we need good people. What kind of job are you looking at? Just keep in mind just because you scor high doesn't guarantee you the job you want. The AF is going to try to put you where they need you, bottom line. If you want to go into a job that's not hurting for people you're not going to get it. They've got people in line to get in so they're going to put through those people first.

You have to keep in mind that they hold all the cards and you really don't have a lot to bargain with unless you score like a 100. Seriously, let me know if you're still interested and I can ask some questions about the jobs they're pushing right now. I have a good friend who's a recruiter in Winchester and he can get me the answers.

I know it's personal to you but I promise it was nothing personal for the AF. It's a numbers game and these guys are constantly pushing to get their quotas. Again, don't let a single incident keep you from an opportunity at free school, a learned trade, great benefits and stability. Especially in today's economy. It's never too late and I can say from experience since I'm currently working at an AF Technical training School, older more mature recruits have a much easier time adjusting to AF life than the 18 year olds fresh off the teet.
