selvin young released by broncos- should we?

According to PFT he was just released. I for one really think the skins should pick this guy up and dump either betts or rock. Young has really good size (5'11 215) and has the speed to break off long TD runs. Plus he is only 25 and doesn't have a lot of mileage.

What do you all think???

Honestly, we need to dump Rock's ass at some point in time. This guy just isn't the man who needs to replace him.

Why do people keep wanting to dump the best kick returner we've had since Brian Mitchell? Adding another running back for depth is one thing, but dropping Rock is not the answer.

Rock just waste of a roster spot. Rock is not good at RB and hurting the skins depth at rb position because we can only carry three RB and Rock taken that spot away. He will get you maybe a return for a td a season but If that really a good?

Is that statement a joke? You are comparing him to Brian mitchell?

Didn't look he was comparing him to Mitchell, just saying he's the best KR we've had *since* Mitchell. If you think about it, that's really not necessarily saying much, since we've had some craptastic kick returning going on in the intervening years.

But are you saying our KR's are good now?

We do need to dump Rock. The Skins' should have never given him a extension, there are a TON of running backs every year in the draft that are faster and don't fumble every time they touch the ball. I'm not saying we should use a #1 pick, but a 5 or 6 could still result in good talent at the RB position. No team should ever have a RB over the age of 28.

Yes, I think Rock is a very good (not great) kick returner. Our punt returns suck. Rock will also be 30 this season, however, so it's completely reasonable to check out alternatives. I will add that when I went to NFL.com just now to compare the Cartwright/Mitchell stats, I was a little surprised to see that between the 2, Rock has had the 2 highest number of 20+ returns in a season, the highest yards per return for a season with the Redskins ... and the higher career yards per return average. Cartwright has also fumbled less than Mitchell did. Mitchell scored 2 TDs on returns for the Skins, while Cartwright has one. Mitchell has a big edge in one area, with more 40+ returns.

I've always considered Mitchell a much more exciting return man than Cartwright (and still do), so I was surprised at how favorably Rock matched up with the numbers.

Rock has been a very consistent kick returner. He allows his wedge to set up, follows his blockers, and constantly gets around 30 yards. Every now and then he will break a longer one, but that is a rare occurrence.

With that being said, Rock needs to be dumped for a more explosive kick returner. The NFL changed the kick offs rules for this upcoming season, effectively getting rid of the wedge formation. That means kick returners will not be allowed to follow that wedge up and try to get into whatever hole is created. They will need to be able to make things happen in open space, and get around individual blocks.

Rock just isn't explosive enough to do that. I think we signed someone from the CFL awhile back, and he seems faster, quicker, with a burst. Dorsey? Something like that?

Rock does not need to be dumped. He is a key cog on special teams, both as a kick returner and on coverage teams. Could we use Hester or Cribs? Sure. But returning kicks is about a lot more than speed, or as Rock hasn't been the fastest member on the team at any point in his career. We need to have a tangible commodity before we let Rock go.

Selvin Young is the type of back we need to spell Portis.

He's young, quick, fast, has good hands, and is a threat to go all the way every play. He's averaged over 5 yards a carry in his short career. He still has a lot of good years left. Having three power backs on the roster is not what we need. If he can be signed to a reasonable contract, I think this would be a perfect pick up for the Skins.

No... We should give the two speedsters we picked up this offseason a shot. If we let any RB go it should be Betts. Rock makes an impact every game on special teams. Betts has not done anything positive since CP's injury a few years back. Betts fumbles at the worst times and is not the change of pace running back the Redskins need to compliment CP. i would love if our RB line up went like this... Portis, Aldridge/Dorsey, Cartwright

Can he return kicks? If he can, what harm is a workout?

These threads will go away if you people would stop commenting on them. Yes, I know I'm posting but it's already at the top of the page.

And you don't have to look at them unless you click the link. Seriously, it's a football board. This is what people do on football boards in spring, talk about players and how they might or might not fit their team. On every football board.

It's pretty simple, fellas. If this topic bugs you, don't click it. Then create your own thread on a topic you'd rather discuss.

Good post. Rock's value to the team just took a hit with the elimination of the wedge on kickoff returns. I think that's in large part why we brought in Dominique Dorsey as he was special teams player of the year last season in the CFL.

Check out this return by Dorsey for a TD, on a missed FG. 100 yards +...

Rock is still valuable on special teams coverage. Not sure if that alone is enough to guarantee him a roster spot this season, though.
