Why Can't Campbell be the backup?

I wrote this in another thread but feel like it deserves its own. Every argument Iv'e seen about Campbell at QB comes down to him being the starter or getting traded. Why are these the only two options. What's preventing him from staying in DC as a back up QB?

I think Campbell should remain on the team, but as a backup. He is a guy you can count on to NOT LOSE A GAME. This he has proven. But not once during last season, even early on when he was playing well, did he show an ability to open up a lead and rack up a alot of points. NOT ONCE. I believe we have seen Campbell's potential, and while it can benefit our offense, it should be used as a backup plan Plug him in if your starter gets hurt, and let your defense win the game for you, like they did all last season.

But make Brennan the starter, a player who so far has overachieved at every level he has come up against , seems to have a better ability to find open recievers, and more importantly, the endzone. I truly think Brennan offers us a better chance to have a high powered offense to compliment what i believe to be a ridiculous defense this year, making us a COMPLETE football team, not one that manages to squeek by on defensive talent alone.

It would be nice to have a game where we actually have a substantial lead for once and dont end up sitting on the edge of our seats hoping for the defense to save a win for us. Campbell isn't bad, but we can do better. Why settle for what is "good enough" when we have a chance to be dominant on both sides of the ball?

It doesn't have to be final either. Alot of people arguing against letting other qb's play in games treat it like its a one time thing. As if we try someone else and he isn't as good, we can't go back to Campbell? Try everything, THEN determine what gives your theam the best chance to win. Don't get to a point of being "good enough to get by" and then give up trying to improve the position. It doens't make sense.

Make him the back up. His play DOES help the team, and he is well liked and respected. I just believe that others on the team could help MORE.

The only arguments ive ever seen about why Brennan shouldn't get a chance to start is a) because he hasn't started in the NFL already (which makes NO sense), and because he played in a weak college conference (where he played head and shoulders above everyone else and broke a ****load of records).

When has he ever not lived up to, or EXCEEDED the expectations? Where in his carreer has he ever given an indication that he couldn't handle a chance at the pro level? The Suger Bowl? If poor o line play in one game is the only argument Campbell supporters have to go on, then any struggles Campbell himself suffered due to poor line play loses all water. You can't blame the line for Campbell's struggles and then turn around and blame Brennan for the same thing.

So why do we have to start Campbell or run him out of town? He is a decent player who can help the team and is well liked, he CAN benefit our team, but in the right context. Why not offer him a modest contract at the end of the season and keep him around as a reliable, if unspectacular, insurance plan for Zorn as we continue to look for our franchise QB? I think the lack of interest by other teams during the Cutler fiasco works towards the organization's advantage in this scenario. Also, it would give him a chance to remai somewhere with a consistant offense instead of havin to learn another. And if other Qb's are tried and are busts he will have numerous opportunities to win the starting spot back.

I just haven't really seen this scenario discussed and it seems to make the most sense to me in terms of benifiting the organization.

My question is why do you actually think CB can do any better then JC? I think JC with a decent offensive line and having the chance to stay in the same system would allow him to finally be a productive QB, meantime CB has done nothing but looked good against pre season camp fodder and 3rd string defenses. Let CB sit another year if anything and if JC walks next year then give him a chance......

If he doesn't improve at a higher rate this year than he has in the past four, he'll be the starter or backup for another team soon enough. That being said, he has my full support this year and I hope he has a great season (for all you Campbell lovers).

I don't mind Colt getting a chance to see what he can or can't do during preseason, I don't even mind if he gets in if Campbell is mucking it up, but Colt did not show enough last preseason to warrant this kind of belief. Campbell's our guy until proven otherwise.

Because he's the best quarterback on our roster.

If Colt Brennan was better, don't you think Jim Zorn would figure that out before any of us?

No. ES knows everything before the coaching staff. The staff is just set up as a conspiracy for Snyder to secretly run the team.
