First Star Trek Review...

I won't post the entire review... here is all you need to read.. from the DailyMail.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/reviews/article-1172164/Out-world-The-Mails-film-critic-gives-verdict-new-Star-Trek-movie.html

Out of this world! The Mail's film critic gives his verdict on the new Star Trek movie

......

The short answer is that J.J. Abrams had come up with a tremendous idea, inspired no doubt by the success of Batman Begins and Casino Royale, both of which had reinvigorated tired franchises by recasting and going back to basics.

The result is not only by far the best of the 11 Star Trek movies, it must rank as the outstanding prequel of all time.

I just read the entire review.... Spoil warning... it gives the movie five stars, but gives away a little too much info on the plot... read the entire thing at your own risk..

I thought casino royal was ungodly boring and horrible.

I thought casino royal was the best bond film ever, certainly the best in the last few decades.

Now If you immediately think that's like being the tallest midget, then that's evidence, you aren't a fan of the genre.

I'd be interested in hearing what Larry has to say about it. I've heard Trekkies are up in arms about this movie, so it can't be too bad. :)

The chase scene and the fight scenes by themselves were worth the price of admission.

Best Bond film to date.

Best Bond film was From Russia With Love. No other film so captured the paranoia of the Cold War. It felt like a real spy doing real things with doublecrosses and everything.

After that, I will vote for Casino Royale.

Yeah nothing says cold war to me like, a hot sexy Russian babe being ordered to make out with the enemy by an old cratchety lady which a steleto in her boot working for a guy who likes cats.

Personally I thought Robert Shaw made a better German in the battle of the bulge than a Russian in from Russia with love.

I mean please... The russians weren't even the bad guys in from Russia with love, all the bad Russians were defectors to SPECTOR.

I would say my favorite cold war movie was "Seven Days in May" with Kirk Douglas for pure paranoia, or beter yet "Ice station Zebra" with Rock Hudson, Jim Brown and Ernest Bogynigne justified paranio against the Russians...... Bond really didn't fight the russians much, he fought with them a lot, against the common enemy SPECTOR.

Larry hasn't seen it, and probably isn't going to be able to, for a year or so.

The longest Larry has left Mom alone, in the last year, is about 40 minutes. (And in the last several months, the longest has been about five minutes.)

Some of the commercials have looked pretty good, to me. The second trailer, to me, looked terrible. (Since what I saw in that one was a teenaged Jim Kirk intentionally driving a 200 year old antique car over a cliff, so that he could win a game of chicken.)

They review says Lenard Nemo has a significant part in this movie, more than the Cameo which we were first told of. I can't see Trekies being too upset with any movie which has Lenard in it.

Why are Trekies upset? Frankly I'm upset with Trekies. The last Star Trek series Enterprise was really good, but because it "violated" what trekies thought should be in a Star Trek universe they didn't support it and it died a premature death...

I'll wait to hear their opinions on this one... but I'm skeptical.

eh, Enterprise was cancelled because the first two seasons were boring and lame and the captain was a fool. Enterprise got really good in its 3rd and 4th seasons, but it was too little too late to save that incarnation, and they still didn't solve the problem that Captain Archer just wasn't at all likable. Picard and Kirk were both brilliant characters. Sisko was kind of a trainwreck but still compelling. Janeway was pretty boring, but not bad. Archer just never seemed to know what the heck was going on ever, even after it became obvious to the audience. He routinely attacked his allies and was duped by his enemies. It was frustrating to watch.

Speaking of Janeway, over the past year, I've been watching every Voyager episode in order with my wife, and we are having a lot of fun. that show got a bad rap. it's widely regarded as the worst Trek series, but it's not that bad. the pilot episode is great. the first 3 or 4 seasons are indeed pretty mediocre. but in season 5 it seemed to really find its voice, and midway through season 6 it has turned into a pretty entertaining show that knows its strengths and has finally figured out how to play to them.

ANYWAY.

yeah, this movie is gonna rule.

Yeah, I had given up on Enterprise after not much time so I never saw the later seasons. It was not very good in the beginning especially with the way they were ignoring Star Trek history.

OH another really fascinating note -- there have been about a DOZEN plot points from Voyager that when they happened, my wife and i's jaws dropped, because they were dead ringers for events that have also shown up in LOST! We've become dead certain JJ Abrams must have watched Voyager, and either subliminally or intentionally borrowed (and yes improved upon) a lot of twists from Voyager for use on Lost!

I watched voyager from start to finish. Which plot lines are you talking about?

*bump*

Something I've been noticing from the tiny clips they're showing in the commercials:

I see a lot of pictures of the Enterprise, where "the camera's at a funny angle". Or where "The Enterprise is upside down."

You know, as opposed to that Universe where the Enterprise, the Klingons, and the camera all have "up" pointing in the same direction.

I really like the idea. I think it's a stylistic thing that's been missing from space scenes for a long, long, time.

I remember really approving of the one scene in First Contact, where they showed some space suited astronauts walking across this huge, flat, surface, then panned back to show that they were walking on the "bottom" of the saucer.

To me, it looks more "realistic" if the ships wouldn't all be "right side up".

(I could also see how it could get confusing for the audience to figure out what's going on. Or irritating. But I think it would be a neat thing to do.)
