MARK PHILLIPS
In Cooleys trailer for his new show, he talks about why he thinks he's so popular (44 seconds in) http://chriscooley47.blogspot.com/ He says its probably because he's the only white guy that touches the ball. I dont know if he was joking or not, but it makes sense. How many white guys are out there at skilled positions making plays? I guess it reminds me alot of John Riggins. Ok, we know he was a great player, but it was very rare and still is to see a white RB that successful. I hope this doesnt get me in trouble, and in no way am I trying to be racist, just been thinking alot about what Cooley said and figured I'm not the only one to have an opinion on it. CM916
They don't make guys like Riggo anymore, that's for certain. Mike Alstott was the last thing even resembling that.
Reaganaut
Cooley is WHITE??? Are you kidding me? I thought he was a brother from the way he was acting in the Easterns commercials. Damn. Gotta trade his jersey now.
Dark Acre
Does Cooley have a serious off-field bone in his body? It's probably a mixture of truth and sarcasm. A lot of people voted for Obama b/c they wanted to see a person who looked like them in White House. People may root for Cooley all the more b/c they want to see a guy who looks like them score TDs. If he were black, esp. w/that 'fro, he'd still be pretty popular though I think. Like Portis isn't popular?
Skins-Canes-Mounties
I think it is valid - at least for some fans. The rednecks in the outlying areas love the guy. I gotta say though that the overwhelming reason is more than likely his gritty play. He plays in the middle of the field, he takes hits, and he produces. Jimbo
The curly hair, the tight shorts and general goofiness probably have a little to do with it as well.
Rhodus333
I hope this doesn't get twisted and turn into a "cooley hates black people" thread. . . . But then again this is ES, where facts are few and logic is checked at the door That's pretty funny though.....

polywog999
When he says it, it sounds kind of funny (a little). When I see it here, in a thread, it makes me wonder why you think it was a good Idea to open this subject. Perhaps they like Cooley because he catches the ball?

Skins n' Bones
Cooley is popular because he is a hard working Pro Bowl player with a great quirky personality and sense of humor on and off the field. It has nothing to do with skin color. With all the criticism the Skins' FO gets, the definitely got it right with him!
Rdskn4Lyf21
That must mean Clinton Portis is popular because he's black, right?
paredskinsfan
Wait, I'm white and I like Cooley. I dont care if he is purple, if he keeps catching balls and it takes three defenders to bring him down I am a fan. For instance Suisham is white and I can't stand his ***, so I guess that means i'm not racist.
terpfan
Maybe that is a small part of it. He's kind of like the every man. But I think its more because he's an outgoing, entertaining guy off the field and a great player on it.

Meatsnack
Anyone remember the big character skit Portis did with about 5 teammates(Betts, Rock, etc.)? Cooley was in that one and was the only white guy. When asked by the interviewer to give out a name for the camera, the guys were all surprised and a few came up with pretty funny names. Cooley looked like a deer in the headlights and finally said, "uhhhhhh, Johnny Whiteguy". Needless to say, all of his teammates cracked up, as did the camera guys since you can see the camera start to shake. Please, let a little humor live. If Chris Rock can talk about his life in the terms he does, Cooley should be allowed a little leeway to make a joke. Is Todd Yoder popular because he is white and catches the ball? No, nobody gives a damn about Todd Yoder except Mr. and Mrs. Yoder. Cooley has gone to the Pro Bowl and is a funny cat in a "Jackass" kind of way. Who on this board thinks Gonzalez or gates wouldn't be popular in this town playing tohe B&G? Last, and I hope this always remains true, the Redskins have been a uniter in a town that has seen a lot of racial tension over the years. Please don't try to draw lines on the team that aren't there. Folks as old or older than I am with area connections can remember times in the civil rights era when seeing black and white men cheering next to one another at RFK was a hell of a fine and unusual thing. Rocky52Mc
I think it's a factor. Just like it's a factor that half of the man crushes that develop on these boards are local products. There's no doubt that the NFL is now filled with African American players, and that's a great thing. Our team had a lot to do with this, and it's rich in African American history in the NFL. So in a sense, the "white guy" is the minority in the NFL, so some tend to really enjoy a player like Cooley because he's funny/crazy/white/different/great.
