KDawg
http://rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&hl=142380&id=702 John Madden, 73, has announced his retirement from broadcasting. It's hard to imagine Sundays without Madden after 30 years in broadcasting. "I still love every part of it ... but I know this is the right time," Madden said. Madden called his eleventh Super Bowl in Tampa, won 16 Emmy Awards, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame for coaching in 2006. Cris Collinsworth filled in for Madden last year for one game, and makes the logical replacement. Madden will talk about the move at 11:15ET on his radio show. FUBAR
This is sad. Madden IS football. I always thought he'd announce til his health wouldn't allow him, hopefully he's doing OK. At least I can still get my Madden fix with his video game.
KDawg
You know, people always complained about him... But I'll miss the lug.
MikeSellers45
That sucks, I loved Madden. Plus, he doesn't even announce on his video game anymore.
FUBAR
That sucks, I loved Madden. Plus, he doesn't even announce on his video game anymore. Yeah but you can always hear his voice when you 'Ask Madden.' Haha.
That Redskins Fan
this truly sucks what a voice and fixture for the national football league i wonder who replaces him on sunday night football
SirClintonPortis
I loved to hear him talk. Seriously, I am enamored to the way he says "BOOM" and "big and strong".
FUBAR
this truly suckswhat a voice and fixture for the national football league i wonder who replaces him on sunday night football If last year is any indication, it will be Cris Collinsworth. Although he is no Madden, I will have no problem with that at all. He makes the games very funny and entertaining IMO.
ntotoro
Guess he decided Brett Favre really meant it this time.
ixcuincle
I second Collinsworth, when Madden took a week off from SNF Collinsworth took over the color commentator role. He is the most likely person to replace Madden, and I have no problems with this.
IONTOP
Guess he decided Brett Favre really meant it this time. DAMNIT... I was going to post the same thing... Eh, to me it was his time... He's a legend, but some of the "maddenisms" are classic
MattFancy
I'm gonna miss Madden. I think he was a big reason the NFL has become so popular. From his commentary to the Madden video game franchise. He has meant alot to the NFL. Sunday night's won't be the same without him!
Campbell's_da_man
Hallelujah!!! The big loud mouth has finally (BOOM) been plugged! He was (BOOM) way overated. And (BOOOM) he won't be missed!
Dan T.
In a related story, Frank Caliendo was spotted in Burbank, sobbing uncontrollably. Hallelujah!!! The big loud mouth has finally (BOOM) been plugged! He was (BOOM) way overated. And (BOOOM) he won't be missed! I disagree wholeheartedly. Madden never forgot that watching the game should be fun, and he made it fun. He slipped some over the last few years, but he was still better than most of the guys doing color commentary today. f_trizzy
I wonder if Harry Kalas' passing had anything to do with his decision. He is the same age as Kalas, not really sure of any health issues with Madden though.
Mooney
Hallelujah!!! The big loud mouth has finally (BOOM) been plugged! He was (BOOM) way overated. And (BOOOM) he won't be missed! Agree, it's a good day. He was as annoying as hell. Madden and Summerall were the worst. To each his own....

goflyhelo
I loved the guy! I thought his best was when he was paired with Pat Summerall when they were both with CBS. Listening to them two doing a Redskins vs (insert NFC East team here) was the best for me. He will be missed...
doncherry
Agree, it's a good day. He was as annoying as hell. Madden and Summerall were the worst. To each his own.... you are the first person that I have ever seen say some negative about Pat Summerall. What is it about Summerall that you didn't like? goflyhelo
you are the first person that I have ever seen say some negative about Pat Summerall. What is it about Summerall that you didn't like? They were the best together! I really do not understand why people did not like them. Oh well, like the hater said, to each his own...
Mooney
you are the first person that I have ever seen say some negative about Pat Summerall. What is it about Summerall that you didn't like? As a former Giant, I thought he was terribly biased against the Redskins. Tom Brookshier, a former Eagle, at least admitted his hatred for the 'Skins after he retired. I understand Madden and Summeralls appeal to the masses and less knowledgeable football fans, but their analysis was elementary, almost cartoonish. pointyfootball
What I liked best about Madden was that he didn't have the spit/polish of most another announcements, and actually looked quite uncomfortable in his suit jacket whenever they panned to him. Or, in a word, genuine. What you saw/heard is most likely what he's like in real life as well. He could have been one of my slightly overbearing uncles talking football in the booth and I think that's why people love(d) him; because he seemed like a regular guy with a lot of football knowledge. In a time when all television has to be staged, politically correct and carefully produced, Madden succeeded even though he probably was the complete opposite of what networks are looking for in a color analyst. Some great Madden quotes: "If you see a defense team with dirt and mud on their backs they've had a bad day." "Hey, the offensive linemen are the biggest guys on the field, they're bigger than everybody else, and that's what makes them the biggest guys on the field." "Here's a guy, that when runs he goes a lot faster." "Mark Brunell likes to soak his balls before a rainy game." "He was waiting for something to develop and, WHAP! He got developed!" "They're either going to run the ball here, or they're gonna pass it." PF
LeftCoast Skinz FAN
This is a sad day for football. I loved his random rants and how he would end up so far off the original topic by the time he finished talking. I loved his sound effects, "Boom!" I will miss him, I thought it was sad when he wasn't doing Monday Night Football anymore, now no Madden at all. Maybe he will get back to announcing on his video game. I miss Madden on there also, hate Cris Collinsworth. Hope his health is going ok, but I will miss him. Thanks for all the memories John!!! :point2sky
MattFancy
Good article by Peter King about Madden. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/04/16/madden/index.html?eref=T1
SkinsGuy
According to this article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090416/ap_en_tv/fbn_madden_retires;_ylt=AgpFKSegJGOw2OFI3BjZ3bZxFb8C It will be Collinsworth who takes over for Madden. Madden also says health isn't an issue, he (like Gibbs) justs wants to spend more time with his family. Thanks for the memories, John.
