Chat with Matt Mosley

Cowboys and Indians: Chances of the Skins and the 'Boys opening up the new stadium to start the '09 season?

SportsNation Matt Mosley: (12:00 PM ET ) Welcome to the Beast chat. It's schedule day across the NFL. I think there's a one in three chance of that scenario happening. But I may get to the bottom of this before 7 p.m. ET!!

BJ (Lake Tahoe, NV): Who's your guess for the first opponent to the Cowboys in the new Jones-Mahal?

SportsNation Matt Mosley: (12:06 PM ET ) Early on, my gut was saying Redskins. The one thing to keep in mind is that the NFL hit the Redskins with all three of their East road games in the first half of the '08 season. They may try to even things out a little bit this season.

Scott (Boston, MA): Why, oh why, are the Redskins expected to take Mark Sanchez in the first round? Shouldn't they be looking to grab the best linemen available, or more intelligently, trade down and get multiple linemen?

SportsNation Matt Mosley: (12:07 PM ET ) I think Mel Kiper Jr.'s the only who has that right now. I don't think the 'Skins will take Sanchez with that No. 13 pick. In fact, there's a good chance he's already off the board by then.

BJ (Lake Tahoe, NV): Hope you had a good Easter Holiday. Do you think the NFC East has lost some of it's so-called dominance this offseason and won't be sending 2 or 3 teams to the NFC playoffs this year?

SportsNation Matt Mosley: (12:09 PM ET ) No, I don't think that at all, BJ. The Giants reloaded on defense and they're a receiver away from being dominant again. The Eagles have a ton of ammunition via draft picks -- and they just reached the NFC title game. The Cowboys should be better on defense and the Redskins made a huge push on the defensive side. I think three teams is a reasonable goal.

Robert (Latrobe, PA): Is this Jason Campbell's last chance to prove to Dan Snyder that he is the QB of the future?

SportsNation Matt Mosley: (12:12 PM ET ) Yep

Wayne (Ft Lauderdale): who has at the best offseason in the NFC east so far please rank them 1-4 this is mine giants, skins, boys, eagles agree?

SportsNation Matt Mosley: (12:13 PM ET ) This is obvioulsy incomplete because of the draft. But at this point, I'd say:

1. Giants

2. Redskins

3. Cowboys

4. Eagles

Joseph (Sacramento, CA): Could you please give me an insider's view to what the Skins realistic draft board looks like at the moment? I know that Rey Maualuga is visiting with them today, but is he ranked higher on their board then say A.Smith, Orakapo, Maybin, Oher, etc.? Thanks and love the work.

SportsNation Matt Mosley: (12:31 PM ET ) Thanks, Joseph. I think the Redskins will consider moving up a couple of picks if they can get Orakpo, They've tried to hide their passion for this kid, but haven't done a great job of it! Maybin would be the next choice. There are some character concerns on Maualuga. I know that stuff has come up quite a bit in their discussions.

Chuck (Wash DC): Matt, given how Dan Snyder thinks, why arent the Skins in the conversation to trade for Braylon? They clearly hate drafting players, and Edwards would give them another weapon for Campbell and potentiall open things up for Portis and Cooley as well.

SportsNation Matt Mosley: (12:32 PM ET ) They are committed to seeing what they have in last year's second-round picks Kelly and Thomas. The trade for Edwards won't happen.

djd(largo,md) [via mobile]: hello matt... what should the skins do in the draft... who should they draft or should they trade their 13 pick to get more

SportsNation Matt Mosley: (12:56 PM ET ) If they're sitting there at No. 13 and see a guy they like a lot in the 18-20 range, then by all means trade down and grab another pick. If Phillip Daniels doesn't get hurt in training camp last season, we're not having this conversation.

I'd love to get Orakpo but I'm not sure I want the Skins to move up in order to do so.

Orakpo is all but a Cleveland Brown right now, and even if they weren't going to take him i'm not exactly sure how we'd move from 13 to #5 without completely ruining this years draft.

#5 pick is 1,700 points.

#13 pick is 1,150 points.

550 points is the equivalent of an early 2nd round pick (which we don't have) or multiple 2nd day selections.

im starting to be more and more convinced that kiper is talking out of his $*% when it comes to sanchez and the skins

He either has an extremely tight lipped inside source that talks only to Mel, or shellhead is picking up transmissions from Alpha Centauri again with his hair and is getting them confused with the draft again.

i agree as well, even though I admit his freindship with Cerrato makes me wonder though

couldnt he be doing his bud a favor and adding value to the pick?... if we trade that is.

OL and LB are our needs, and there will be a good one there, only trade down if your man isnt there (orakpo, smith)

Maybe, Kiper was on Cerrato's radio shot a lot and they seemed very chummy -- hopefully though that doesn't mean that Kiper has the real goods. I am not a fan of the idea of trading up for anybody. They have too few picks.

"There are some character concerns on Maualuga. I know that stuff has come up quite a bit in their [Redskins] discussions."

Just wanted to point that out...

Of course you did. Internet crap like this floats about every year and Mosley is basically repeating the verbal diarrhea that others have said. It's been all but shot down but just like the fake steroid and failed drug test claims with other players, even after it is discounted it cannot be dismissed.

As stated before, I hope the Skins due their due diligence on this kid.

Agreed. Also, I don't see us taking Maybin over Maualuga, let alone at thirteen because I think we may be able to drop back and still get Maybin whereas I really think Maualuga would go very shortly after 13 if we don't take him or trade down. At the same time, Moselely knows much more than I do and actually talks to people that have information so I guess I'll take him at his word.
