Maui Day 1-- first batch of photos up

The plane hit tremendous turbulence or operating winds for about thirty minutes of the flight. We dropped about 4,000 feet in one buffet alone. Kids were screaming, "Crash landing and emergency landing" which strangely made a lot of us laugh. Finally, the plane was righted (well, you know that because I'm writing this) and we landed on a rainy day in Maui.

It's now closing in at 5:00 in the morning. I forced myself to go to sleep a second time because the first time I woke up at 1: am. The temp outside right now feels nice and there's a mango and lime tree in the back yard (although sadly, nothing looks ripe). The price of groceries is nearly double for many of the basic staple, but the restaurant we went to yesterday wasn't that bad and the fish was caught that day.

This is my first time in Hawaii and I am looking forward to it very much. I don't think I realized how much I needed time off until I packed my bags and began the trip to the airport. It's been two years since I've done anything fun that lasted more than a day or a weekend.

I know some of the things I think I want to do (and ES helped with that. Thanks!), but for now, for today, I want I relish the idea of doing nothing.

Thanks

Definately want to snorkel and might try surfing (are there bunny slopes lol), but want to see those guys who are great at it do their thing. Just saw the skate boarding thread and there's a little of that too. It's fun to see people do what they do well even if it is non productive and dangerous.

Hi Burgold! Good to hear you made it okay!

I don't know how long you have there, but some cool things I did when I've visited which I highly recommend:

- Snorkeling at Molokini. You take a ferry out there and the snorkeling is great.

- Bike ride down Haleakala. They take you in vans up there, you see the sunset, then you ride your bikes down (but it's basically just coasting and very little effort involved  )

- Going into Lahina to check out the town.

I know I butchered the spelling of all these places, sorry. Anyway, those are some suggestions from my visits. Or else, you can always just plunk your butt on the beach and soak up the sun with some rumrunners...that works too :D

Have fun!!

I offered it up when you made that post a couple months back and I'll drop it again:

GO TO FISHBOWL!!!!

It is an 'off the beaten path' place to see an amazing array of fish in a little protected cove. You will not believe how amazing it is. I still recall it like it was yesterday. And another thing, stay off ES ! Get out there man....and have a great time.

I remember when I went to Hawaii a couple of years ago there was this one volcano which would flow lava into the ocean. I got to see it at night, and it was amazing. I don't remember exactly what it was called, but if you here anything about that be sure to go and check it out. It is an amazing sight.

Remember, don't touch any sea turtles! One of the guys told me that it is a crime to touch one. I don't know if he was screwing with me or not, but I'd rather not take any chances.

I've been to Hawaii before and my g/f is from Hawaii. The place is beautiful and there is so much to do. It is very expensive to go there or live there. That said yes visit waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Mount Kilaeua (spelling), waterfalls and the set of Lost :P (its at police beach). Have fun!

I've never been to Maui, but I went to the Big Island a few years ago...we learned how to surf (yes they have "bunny slopes" :silly:), took a helicopter tour of volcanoes (amazingggg), hiked to the waterfalls (also amazing), went on a 5 hour horseback ride (ftw) and went to a beach and saw a shark...Hawaii is awesome, hope you have a blast! :D And keep an eye on your wallet, that place is crazy expensive...
