Agreed, that autotune song at the end of South Park sounded absolutely horrible just like Kanye's autotune music.

I avoid today's music because most of it is just crap pop or autotune, it's painful for the ears. Guess I'm not missing out on much.

If you ain't T-Pain then please stop that ish. I only excuse Mr. Pain because it's a guilty pleasure at times and he wouldn't have a career without it. It's so lame because more and more artist are using it. I just heard a diss record on auto tune. Seriously, wtf?

what is auto tone?

edit, oops, auto tune

I'm honestly not really sure what it is but lots of people talk about it. I know Kanye is a big fan of it, I don't even know what it does but it's what makes his voice just sound a little bit off(I think the exact opposite of what it is supposed to do.) This video is a good example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2M9YHATH2Q i think, also just a warning this video is really weird.

I can't believe everyone is so bent out of shape about Autotune. I think it is a great idea, but at the same time it is completely abused. I'm gonna agree with Kevin here and say that the vast majority of people use auto tune and have been for the past however many years.

If you listen to the multitrack rips from Rock Band, and listen to a System of a Down tune, you can clearly hear Autotune on Serj's vox. It is kind of starting. I was listening to the Lacuna Coil album and the idiots did a terrible job with the auto tuning on Cristina's vocals. Her vibrato sounds like some is shaking her.

It is creative to use it as an effect, I guess. It adds a different texture, but it is a fad and really quite lame now.

But the bigger problem at hand is how producers and artists think that any audio engineer can "fix it in the mix." NO WE ****ING CANT! Learn to play your damn music. Learn to sing correctly. Just because we have the tools at our disposal doesn't mean that we need to use them every available moment.

The music industry is becoming so incredibly fake and processed at the expense of perfection that it is ruining the industry.

So dumb question: Bon Jovi at one point was using this little clear tube attached to the microphone for voice effects, is that the same thing?? or completely different?

That was probably a talk box. I am not sure how to define what a talk box is, but it is completely different.

define using it correctly. the fact that i, having no vocal background whatsoever can go into a studio with an engineer and lay down a professional sounding track = greatest thing ever?

auto-tune has given american idol respectability... sigh

Using it correctly....

Say you just recorded a perfectly flawless vocal line for a tune but the very last note you started to go a little flat (or underneath the pitch). Since the other 99% of this take was flawless, we decide that it would make more sense to use auto tune to get the end of the last note back in tune instead of re-tracking the entire vocal.

Yeah, I have a musician friend who uses such a tool to try to get the best out of his recordings and also to figure out where he's off.

Certainly there are some out there who abuse the tool to try to get a funky effect out of it, but I generally don't like it. I'd rather hear more natural tones.
