True or False: Carlos Rogers will get his extension

Boy oh boy, its the offseason, we just need to waste some more time until the schedule comes out (which should be soon, I believe), and then the draft, of course.

Anyway, CR (and the secondary, for that matter), is a subject we have not touched upon this offseason here at ES mostly because cornerback is widely considered a position of strength on the team, despite the loss of Sean Springs.

Carlos Rogers is in an interesting situation if you think about it. He's the Jason Campbell of the defense, in my mind. He's had many opportunities to show he's a top tier corner, and in some instances, he's looked elite, and in others, he's been a bit sloppy (most notably the "hands" issue which we all know about). He's on the last year of his deal and the FO has shown they aren't ready to give him a deal (but are ready to give Deangello a huge deal). That has to spurn him a bit knowing they like paying someone who came in the middle of the season rather than him.

I think Carlos, like Jason, must have a good year and I think he will given the fact that our new 100M dollar investment is here to make the whole secondary better, he will improve. DH will teach him about hands and if so (assuming his coverage is the way it was most of 2008), he will go to the pro bowl, which will lead to his extension.

TRUE

Thoughts?

With an ACTUAL pass rush this year....I am POSITIVE that Loso will spread his wings this year and start picking balls left and right. QBs should be smart enough not to throw in D. Hall's area while Albert is collapsing upon them. So Carlos will have the opportunity to pick off rushed passes from #2 receivers and TEs and I already know Loso is ready to bring them back for 6. He wants to return a INT SO BAD!! lol He gets too excited and anticipates where he will run and dodge before thinking about wrapping his hands around the ball.

Yes...he will get like a 4 year extension. Hall and Rogers will be our primary CBs for the next 5-6 years.

Hopefully true, If he would catch a ball that hit his hands, I'd say he is a top ten corner

That's why he plays defense....

He proably did such a good job swatting at the ball when it came to him as a receiver they thought he'd be perfect as a corner....:hysterical:

Carlos Rogers may not be able to catch, but he's one of the better cover corners in the NFL. This past year, there weren't many guys that were able to close as quickly as he did and limit YAC. I really don't want to say he's the JC of the defense (even though I like JC a lot) because he's actually shown to be elite on a consistent basis IMO.

Just because a guy doesn't pick off passes doesn't make him non-elite. Nnamdi had worse hands than Carlos did when he came into the league, but the cover skills were there.

Carlos has already suggested that he wants to get PAID after this season, whether here or elsewhere. On the one hand, I don't think the Skins think highly enough of him to break the bank on him, but on the other, I can't really see too many other teams breaking the bank on him either.

WANTING to get paid and GETTING paid are two different things. My guess is the only way he's back here after the season is if there isn't much of a market for him around the league, and he settles for less than he wants here.

This is easy. We do not extend him. We allow the contract to expire.

With no new CBA, Rogers will be a RFA. We will tender him. We will have the right to match any offer he receives. He will be back. If not, we will get a high round draft pick as compensation.

If he is not a RFA, we will attempt to re-sign. If he doesn't re-sign, it will be because he is getting big money elsewhere. We will get a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick with a salary like he may command (depending on who we sign next year).

Oooo we got a thinker here. Good thinking, nice post.

I think he'll get his extension, because if he walks, one of our biggest strengths becomes a huge weakness in 2010. We would be losing Shawn Springs and Carlos Rogers in back-to-back seasons, and Fred Smoot probably won't be productive by then. We'd be looking at having DeAngelo Hall and using another draft pick on a top corner. I won't project what Tryon will do, but I'm not banking on anything from him.

Carlos is already a top 10 CB despite his hands . . . If he were to work on those and get it down, I cannot see a reason why he wouldn't have a great year. And a great year = extension.

I agree.... I don't judge a CB on his INTs, it's game changing, yes, but teams with adequate offenses don't rely on turnovers or defensive scores, they rely on stops... CR gives us solid coverage and with a pass rush, great chances at 3 and outs... I'll take that...

Yeah for the Skins, having or not having a new CBA is critical for both Rogers and Campbell since they were drafted in the same year and signed similar contracts. Personally I hope they do re-sign Rogers because there isn't much depth behind him if he leaves. They can definitely go out and pay somebody to replace him, but they would probably be getting older at the position.

I don't see how you can compare Rogers to Campbell. Campbell has several things at his particular position that he needs to work on. Rogers however has only one.

IMO Rogers is well on his way to actually becoming a true and rare shut down cornerback in the NFL. He has been successful in shutting down #1 wideouts in the past, an that was without us having any type of pass rush.

An uncapped year and RFA would certainly help us keep Carlos but would not guaruntee it. There would be nothing keeping another team from puttin ga Minnesota/Seattle-esque poison pill to prevent us from getting a chance to match it. Teams generally shy away from these types of clauses but they're perfectly legal within the NFL.

In my opinion if we wait for the season to end he's gone. Look at the contracts some of the second and third tier CB's got this offseason. There are few better in pure coverage than Carlos, he just happens to have bricks stuck to his hands. If I were the FO I would be working out a contract this summer that would pay him well, but not Hall well (who like every Redskin is overpaid). We can all agree that Rogers' major flaw is his hands so the difference in his contract can be made up with huge interception based incentives every year.
